So about three years ago at Christmas, my Dad asked me if I wanted to take his old Ukulele home with me, I said sure, partially because I thought the kids would think it was cool, and now 6 Ukuleles and countless song tabs printed up off the internet later, I am involved with a group called the "Denver Ukulele Orchestra" and I am playing for my daughter's Pre-School twice a month. I was (and still am) amazed at how much satisfaction I get out of this hobby and it was one of the things I used to fight the feeling of isolation before I joined my Dad's group. So I was wondering what you all do to break up the day? I know I heard someone talking about model trains...

and as a bonus if anyone was looking for Thanksgiving songs to sing with your kids (and really who hasn't stayed up nights looking for those elusive Thanksgiving songs) here are a couple that I recorded for Mackenzie's Pre-School, Enjoy!!

Well...

11/24/2006 8:35:47 AM

I lift weights 3 days a week and do Cardio work 5-7 days a week. Not much excitement there I know. This is me time, I get to space out a bit if I want (how is explained below), get heart healthy, and then head off to the library to get some human interaction. It’s not the optimum place I know, but it’s free and has free WIFI for my laptop, then my research options are unlimited.

Sorry, I am going off track here...
My wife’s job makes her travel M-F to exotic locations such as Sterling CO, Wray CO, and Santa Fe NM and beyond; so I am on call solo 24x7. Isolation was really starting to get to me during a week of 24x7 care sessions and nothing but 4 year old conversations and thinking with no adult interaction will sending me over the top quick.

So now on Tuesday’s we have what my son call Club House Preschool at our neighborhood indoor meeting room facility at the pool, the YMCA is contracted to staff the facilities in summer and part time winter days. They have what they call Amazing Kids a free 1 hour structured time event followed by a 5 buck per 45 minute session following Amazing Kids, called Toddler Time and parents are not welcome so you have to go to Starbucks or wherever kid free. It’s a structured artwork play date that my kid just can’t live without anymore. On another 2.5 days we do 2 full day sessions and one ½ day of preschool at Children’s Choice Preschool, they teach Core Curriculum and the interaction of other kids for my 4 year old is priceless. The first year was killer on us, every sniffle throw up or cough spewed, and there are bunches we caught them. But after his immunity built up, which took 1 full winter season, we are good to go!

The benefits of preschool (not daycare) are to numerous to mention here so do yourself a little research and visit one, it’s good for both your kids and your sanity. Even though your kid will bring home some not so flattering traits such as calling me poopy head (we can be one you know) and talking about guns, the benefits far outweigh being called the occasional poopy head outburst. Plus it gets you involved with their education from the get go.

Even if you can’t afford preschool do yourself a favor and check out the YMCA or a local recreation center, heck even the library has story times for kids.

What's a "hobby"?

Hobbies? Whats that? Does folding laundry count? Right now, my favorite "free time" pastime is napping, bar none...

Love the Uke

Love your ukele playing db. I wish I could play an instrument.

Does pressing the button on a CD player count as playing an instrument? Just wondering...

Oh, and my hobby is writing a book, when I'm not wondering if my CD player is an instrument.
