What Are You Dads Listening To These Days?

I love music. All kinds. Really. Name it. OK, so maybe not ALL kinds, but many, many kinds!

I try to share as much as I can with my kids the music from my life. My folks used to have to hide the rock and roll from us kids. That's because they wanted us to go out and buy our own copies of Sgt. Pepper and Led Zep II. We eventually did.

But nowadays there are so many choices! Ralph Covert, Dan Zanes, Laurie Berkner, TMBG, ect, ect, ect, not to mention all the other music that kids like, like the Beatles, Phish, and other bouncy, jangly, catchy rhythms out there.

But what do you Dads like? What are you listening to when you aren't with the kids?

Me/ I like Wilco a lot. Just saw them the other night. (A rare date night with my wife!) I also like obscure bands like Okkerville River, Giant Sand or not so obscure like Ween. I like Jambands like Widespread Panic, Umphrey's McGee. Currently in the CD player of my Highlander is The Rutles "Archaeology"
But currently playing in iTunes is Sloan (Canadian Band), oh wait, it's on shuffle and just went to Tom Waits from his album "Alice"...Fish and Bird...

So, c'mon! Sound out, Dads! What are YOU listening to?

Brian

Music

My 30gig iPod is usually on shuffle while in the car so who knows what will pop up and my website http://kev.homelinux.net shows what I've played last on my computer.

I tend to listen to a lot of what I call background music, nothing too distractive to take away from reading FARK.com. I play a lot of Gomez, Thievery Corporation, G. Love & Special Sauce and Portishead.

Does it make me a bad parent that my 2 1/2 year old can pick out a Flea bass line?

I just saw The Little Ones

I just saw The Little Ones live. They have a fun sunshine indie pop sound like The Shins. In fact, their album cover is done by the same artist who did Chutes To Narrow.

In case you haven't heard The Shins, go buy both of their albums. Chutes To Narrow is one of the only albums that I like top to bottom. I know it's not a new album, but I can't reference them without explaining how great they are.

And I will certainly mention The Essex Green's "Cannibal Sea" and Belle and Sebastian's "Life Pursuit", which were the best albums of 2006 I.M.O. Check out myspace.com/theessexgreen to listen to some of their songs. I personally have no connection with either band, which is completely not true. They are wonderful- that IS true.

And, I'd just like to remind people that "Pet Sounds" is the best album of all time. I've been reading Brian Wilson's new biography "Smile...", which reminded that I should bring up his finest album written at the pinnacle of his career (and sanity).

Flea

Kev, your 2 1/2 y/o has a good ear for bassist! can he (or she?) pick out Flea in The Wild Thornberries?

Thanks for sharing in this thread! I am looking forward to reading your lists! What is FARK.com? Hmmm, I think I'll go there too!

Thanks,

Bri

I'm SOOO behind...

Man, am I behind the times... I have succeeded in getting my kids addicted to music, but we're pretty stuck in the Dan Zanes/Ralph/Trout Fishing/Berkner rut. (Did anybody manage to score one of the DZ "Flea" uke kits?) "After hours" I usually just listen to our local npr affiliate which has a great jazz feed, and in the car w/o the kids I generally listen to whatever talk show is on NPR at the time. Maybe it's the need to at least hear other adults talking and pretend I'm part of a grownup conversation? :-)

I need to head over to the iTunes store to sample some of the things you guys are talking about...

sirus XM

What interested my son into music is that Dish Network supplies us with sirus satellite radio, so every day until he was about 2 and could voice his opinion he listened to a different style of music every day, no matter how much I hated it. *cough* country *cough*

Square dance anyone?

Well I must be a square, 'cause I've never heard of any of the artists you guys are listening to. Have you ever heard of The Black Eyed Peas? Or Faith Hill? Or, geez, Madonna?

My DJing at wedding receptions is keeping me from hearing the really cool stuff, or the really ...

NPR

Thanks for posting about NPR.... Glad to hear that I'm not the only one that listens to it to regain some sort of adult intellect in my life. I love music but, yeah, pretty much any NPR show seems to fill a certain mental void that occurs after playing "dora" all afternoon.

All across the dial

Well, we listen to a lot of different stuff, I am a Metal (where is that umlaut key when you need it) guy, but that ends up not being terribly age appropriate, so I have actually started listening to a lot of country and World music (but that being almost exclusively Ukulele artists, Brother IZ, Jake Shimabukuro, and such), Jazz guys like Lyle Ritz and Otah-san, and some music from the 20s and 30s (my MP3 player adds all the Iron Maiden and stuff back into the mix and that shuffle playlist can be a little jarring). I had a friend tell me about Radio Disney but it sounds like 'tween music, and I am not sure my five year old is ready for that quite yet, and if we are driving anywhere from 10-1 then we are listening to Jim Rome and "Jungle" Smack (Sports talk radio for all you non-clones)

The Black Eyed Peas

Man, I forgot about these guys. One year back in the day, for Halloween 4 of us went as the The Black Eyed Peas, we painted our eyes black and spray painted a P on our shirts and headed off to party. Now P takes on a new meaning in my daily P vocabulary.

16 songs I've been listening to . . .

Instead of spending 16 bucks on a new CD, check out these 16 songs for $15.84 on iTunes (or just download them for free and when the cybercops show up, tell them your grandmother did it):

SONGS I'VE LISTENED TO LATELY (Not all are kid appropriate)
"When I Say Wife" - Jonathan Richman
(DISCLAIMER: don't play this song around your wife)
"New Slang" - The Shins (See TickTock's post above. Hi Colin!)
"Each Coming Night" - Iron and Wine
"The Seed 2.0" - The Roots with Cody Chesnutt
"Give Back the Key to My Heart" - Uncle Tupelo
"Fiona" - Lyle Lovett
"Oh Yoko" - John Lennon
"Alison's Starting to Happen" - The Lemonheads
"Atlantic City" - Bruce Springsteen
"Higher Ground" - Stevie Wonder
"Sundown" - Gordon Lightfoot

KIDDIE SONGS I LIKE (and there aren't many)
"I Got a Boy and his Name is John" - Johnny Cash
"If You Got 1" - Justin Roberts
"I'm A Little Dinosaur" - Jonathan Richman
(DOH! this song is not on iTunes yet)
"We're Going to Be Friends" - The White Stripes
"The Rainbow Connection" - Sarah McLachlan

Enjoy!
Jim

NICE!!

I saw Megadeth as a special guest with Testament and Judas Priest (pre-out of the closet Halford), those guys had fire shooting out of the entire stage, that was a great time!!

SIster Hazel

Just bumping this old thread to say that I really like Sister Hazel these days for some reason. They have the sound I wanted my college band to have -- modernized country/southern fried rock -- maybe microwaved southern rock?

And I really like Tori Amos, too. And I can always listen to Springsteen and Journey. Evanescence rocks, too.

Also, Al -- Faith Hill is on the very short list of women I would ditch my family for. LOL

Pitchfork's Take on the Sixties

I'd like to recommend Pitchfork's list of top 200 songs from the 60s. I downloaded all the ones I don't have and made a new folder on my ipod called "60s best". I've been listening to it all on shuffle, and I'm really impressed with the compiled list.

The link is here... http://pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/37901

time to change out my changer

newer music rotated through my 6-disc car changer in past 12 months:
Jack Johnson (kid friendly)
Donavon Frankenreiter (sounds like Jack Johnson)
Franz Ferdinand (Thanks Guitar Hero)
White Stripes (Thanks again Guitar Hero)
3 Doors Down
Maroon 5 (a surprise how solid this album is)
Los Lonely Boys
Joss Stone (check her out if you haven't - SOUL)
Queens of the Stone Age (good, not great)
Brian White's SMILE. Sorry, the reveiwers got this one dead wrong. I HATED IT after 2 or three listens!

New to me, old to others:
Sarah McLachlan

Probably new to you, old to me:
Joshua Kadison

On my radar, but not yet in the changer:
Wolfmother
Audioslave (have had short listens)
Gorillaz (don't expect to like it though)
The Shins (you guys like it, I'll try it)

also on regular MP3 rotation (not full albums:
Evanescense
Alan Jackson
George Strait
some other random country
Kylie Minogue - Honestly better than Madonna - try it
R. Kelly (Ignition Remix, just can't get enough of 1 song)
Michelle Branch
Matchbox Twenty
Sugar Ray
Soundgarden
White/Rob Zombie

Old Standbys - they never get old:
Megadeth
Metallica
Queen (the best and most influential arena rock band ever)
Queensryche (all time favorite 80's metal)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
GNR
CCR
SRV
AIC
TMBG
AC/DC
Santana
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
BB King
Buddy Guy
Van Halen

Pretty much any Blues, 70's or 80's rock or metal, 90's country. Most music in the last 10 years is crap though.

I haven't spun Maiden, Sabbath, Floyd or Zep in a while, but they are always a welcome hear.

I am sure I am missing something great

I see you like Josh Stone. Have you ever heard of Nikka Costa? She does a pop/funk/R&B/soul thing and sometimes its just amazing.

I would have to say I've

I would have to say I've been impressed with the Curious George soundtrack while listening to it with the kids. I've been hitting some old Bob Seger and Genesis, since I'm planning on hitting those concerts this year. Picked up the INXS greatest hits cd at a garage sale and had forgotten some of their good stuff. I tend to like a lot of different styles, but don't seem to have much time to listen much these days.

In Rotation

I listen to a lot of different stuff, I usually have what's coming out of my speakers on the left side of my blog.
As of late...

TV On The Radio, Return To Cookie Mountain. The longest this record has not been played since I got it was about three days.
Son Volt, The Search. I like it.
R.E.M., Automatic For The People. Watched them get inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame the other night, it was much deserved. Have been a fan since the Chronic Town e.p.
The Good, The Bad, & The Queen. Good record that I have just started listening to.
Archers Of Loaf, Icky Mettle. One of my favorite records of all time, always time for it.
Jennifer Trynin, Gun Shy Trigger Happy. I just read her book and was a fan of her records.
Stevie Wonder. Me and my three year old daughter love to sing Stevie Wonder and you can find it playing at any given time in the van.
I am a NPR junkie, sometimes it's my only news source. Terry Gross call me, I'm in love with you.

Best Album Of All Time?

TickTock says "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys. While it ranks high on my list, I don't really consider it the best of all time. What do I consider the "best of all time"? Perhaps that should be a forum topic all it's own!
