We are considering eliminating cable (and DVR) from our household and switching to free High Def antennae. So, I'm getting all anxious about it. I've decided to post some series recommendations for everyone, and I hope you guys do the same. And if you know anything about high def antennaes post that too.

I've already posted about Man Vs. Wild, so I'll just say that he continues to amaze me. Last episode he squeezed moisture out of elephant dung for nourishment. The prior episode he purposely jumped into thin ice freezing water to demonstrate the proper way to escape. He is crazy!

Here are some others I like:

Lost- The best part of this show is the intense acting performed so well by the three main characters who are currently captured and imprisoned by the Others. Kate and Sawyer are unbelievably good actors. They show a range of emotions that are completely believable and cause me to care about their fates. I completely forget that I'm watching a television show. And to anybody who was bothered by numbers and hatches enough to quit watching- those are all gone! And the island's not purgatory I promise, so now you can enjoy it knowing that they're not all dead. :)

CBS News Sunday Morning Show- I recently discovered this pleasant Sunday Morning news show that patterns itself like a Sunday newspaper. I'm delighted with this show just for the sake that the majority of their segments are GOOD news- simple interesting stories about people, places, and events. Usually a movie or music critic gives a nice review and Mo Rocca or Ben Stein give editorials. The best part is that the last segment is an unnarrated video of nature. I've never seen talking head pundits squabbling over political scraps on this show.

The Unit- This is a David Mamet written and produced show about a top secret militairy unit, like Delta Force. Unlike other spy shows such as Alias, the premises in The Unit are believable. Unfortunately, Mamet's inability to write for women sours the dialogue and makes the actresses sound phony. But this is a fun show that I think most people might ignore on their "dial".

30 Rock- People who judged this show in the first two episodes are missing a really funny show. I'll go so far as to say that it's funnier than The Office. 30 Rock is also WAY better than Aaron Snorkin's snoozefest Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which is a similar new series. Please for the love of good comedy give it a try.

Biggest Loser- The only thing bad about this show was Caroline Rhea's annoying voice. The cast was really interesting, the drama was built into the premise, and the results were magnificent (not to mention socially uplifting for once).

Real World: Denver- And now to end with a guilty pleasure. I've been with Real World since the beginning. I've seen it decline from a docu-soap with interesting and unique characters and social commentary to a girls gone wild slutfest provoked by free alcahol and supermodel castmembers. This year is no different regarding the fratiness of the seven roommates, but each show has been packed with romances, fights, and other scandalous intrigues. It's fun to watch the chaos.

30 Rock

I wouldn't say that 30 Rock is funnier than The Office but it has really stepped it up the last few episodes.

There is a guy in St. Louis that makes Hi-Def antennas that are supposed to be very good, one even comes in a picture frame! Here is a newpaper story about it.

Once Again Discovery Channel is Too Cool

I like Extreme Engineering, Biker Build Off, Mega Machines and Everest. Man vs Wild is great like you said. Now TLC for the OCC rants. My 4 YO son like the SPEED channel for demolition derby's and Monster Truck competitions, he cracks me up when it's on. Gotta find my IC recorder and get some sound bytes to post.

Web TV

We have downgraded to just PBS, and Blockbuster Online (which is just like Netflix but now allows you to take the movies that they send you into the Bricks and Mortar store and get another rental, as much as I hate Blockbuster, it is kinda cool) but what I really like is the networks now have most of their new shows online. So I have watched all of "30 Rock" and "Heroes" at my leisure (Heroes is exactly the story you think it going to be, but I like it anyway), and with only one commercial per break. We are watching Lost on DVD, it is amazing how much more you catch when you watch them right together, without a week to forget what is going on. My guilty pleasure? "Smallville", sure it is a Teen Soap, but it has Superman and I can embarrass my wife about giving longwinded explanations about small characters.

P.S. Can you tell I used to be a comic book guy?

CBS Sunday Morning

This is my favorite program.
I usually don't watch it until Sunday evening after the kids go to bed, but it is wonderful because it does have good news.
This is my daddy time viewing. I sit in the comfortable recliner in the silence of the basement, get snack and beverage, and hit play on the DVR.
My mom watched it all the time and I picked it up from her long ago. It's good television.

Other Daddy TV

Dirty Jobs on Discovery Channel. The host is great.
Austin City Limits on PBS. I watch no matter who's playing.
Friday Night Lights on NBC. This show will likely get cancelled, but I hope not. Not only do I watch it because I played high school football in Louisiana long ago and it reminds me of that, but I watch because of the parenting that takes place on the program.
Grey's as the wife calls it. The show about the doctors, I don't watch it as much as I hear it in the background when my wife watches, but it does catch my interest only for the music that is being played throughout the show.

Ditto for CBS Sunday

Ditto for CBS Sunday Morning. It is quality TV.

My wife and I have found LOST to be frustrating this season. Instead of a few mysteries being answered (as promised by the promos), there are only more questions. The 3 month break in the middle of the season didn't help either. Last week's episode was good and I hope the next few weeks continue to move the plot forward.

I saw part of the finale for THE BIGGEST LOSER. The results were incredible. The contestants all looked like different people at the end. Not sure I'd go on national TV in spandex, though!

Keep up all of the entertaining reviews, TickTock!

Lost

Lost has been really good lately, reminds me of the first season. I think the problem was that the first block was so boring and awful that it will take a while to blank it from our minds.

Argh! I've given up my

Argh! I've given up my cable and dvr, and switched to high def antenna (hi def isn't working). I guess it's a good thing, but occasionally I'll miss me some Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, and rarely MTV. I have been keeping up with LOST, which keeps getting better and better.

I've also discovered that several of my favorite shows are available online with limited commercial interruption. I've been watching LOST, Heroes, Daily Show, and Apprentice on the web, and it's been pretty good.

I also gave up my boycott of Blockbuster, and I'm now using their online deal mentioned earlier in this thread. I'm doing this for three reasons:

1. Blockbuster has a better deal than Netflix

2. Netflix doesn't offer NC17 either, so it's unfair of me to accuse Blockbuster of censorship

3. Blockbuster eliminated their rediculous late fees (which they took me to the creditors for), and that was my major objection.

My only worry is that I'm not supporting independent movies or quality small company, but I have a feeling that Netflix is just a corporate beast waiting to happen.

Night and Day, Apples and Oranges, Sitcom and not a Sitcom

I don't compare two shows that are different formats. 30Rock is a 30 minute sitcom. Studio60 isn't. I like them both, but don't put them in the same category, so it seems unfair to compare them that way. I think Studio60 will have to do more to keep its' audience. The formula that worked on The West Wing doesn't seem to work as well in the Hollywood studio setting. Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford have good chemistry and I think that Amanda Peet is so cute! Definitley more entertaining to me than the ego-survivor show Apprentice. But I think that Aaron Sorkin and John Wells are a great team and can pull the show together.

I'll agree with you that 30Rock is better as far as successful/viewership is concerened and is one of the better comedies on now. Alec baldwin, to me, is hilarious!

True

I agree. They've often been compared because they have similar themes- behind the scenes of an SNL-type weekend variety show, but they really have nothing in common. I was jumping on the band wagon, but you're right that it isn't fair to compare them.

I haven't watched Studio 60 in quite a while, but on it's own merits as an Aaron Sorkin writer-heavy quick-paced drama, I think the first season failed compared to West Wing or Sports Night.

I should've claimed bias in the initial review because several of 30 Rock castmembers are personal heroes, and I'm rooting for them to succeed.

RE: Mike Rowe

I agree, he is one of the best voices on Discovery TV, any TV for that matter!
I'm still waiting to see on Dirty Jobs, having Mike come in and do a day at an pre toddler daycare and do nothing but diapers at a facility that caters to the Void and Be Free crowd. Our preschool has been known to have the lunch be an offering of Mexican Food with beans.
I can just tell what type of food was served on these days when I open arrive in the PM. Those poor gals don't smell a thing by 4 PM but my eyes are a watering sometimes.
Diapers and beans, there is just something wrong about this kid combination!
