Hello Dads everywhere, I'm entering another era of childcare at home while juggling projects that pay the bills and sending out resumes trying to get back on the career path I was on months before. I have a tech background so putting together a quick site wasn't hard, it's the message and content that dads in Philly would find the most useful that is taking the most time. The site is philadads.com, fill out the form if you are in Philly or surrounding areas and I"ll contact you when the site goes live. Anyway...

In today's economy a 2 income family is truly a must when you have 2 kids unless well your partner makes some good coin.  I was the breadwinner working contracting jobs and with a strong company from 2008 to 2010 and after that disappeared abruptly I found myself freefalling into a job market, unprepared and slightly behind the curve. While I have a few new company projects running, I constantly find myself in a black hole of recruiters calling, questioning and finding my qualifications are too much or not enough to land to that initial interview.  Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

This year has whizzed by and now with my wife's maternity leave ending and her going back to work I have to develop new strategies and goal to once again get ahead of the game.

So I'm doing what works for me in the present, I have a 3 month old that needs me and I'll jump to attention to embrace that duty. In 2009 - 2010 I was on conference calls with developers in California, managing content teams in New York, or supporting our CEO .. all the while bottle feeding my daughter on my shoulder, or entertaining her in her pack-n-play.  So I realize this is completely doable, I just need to find a steadily income from home in order to build a buffer of savings before the something financially daunting hits.

Well no more doom and gloom - I'm excited to start this website, and continue to share ideas and thoughts with working at home dads.  This support structure is exactly what I need and I'm sure others will benefit greatly through the combined efforts of those on this site and hopefully many that join mine at philadads.com.  Hope to talk with you soon.

James.

Try coming to the Convention

I hope you'll try to make the Convention and meet other dads in your situation. It is in DC on Oct. 8, so not too far away. Check out www.athomedadconvention.com for more details.

And, I disagree with you that a family needs 2 incomes. In many cases it is "wants" that are driving the "need" for 2 incomes. Obviously I don't know your situation, but if you take a good, hard look at your expenses and cut out everything you don't need, you might be surprised on how little you can live. I know many at-home dads surviving on the salary of their wives as nurses and teachers.
