The Chicago Tribune began running a new comic strip since the new year, "Raising Hector." The strip deals with a cop who becomes a SAHD. The comic is semi-autobiographical as the creator is himself a SAHD.

Now here's the issue. I haven't enjoyed the strip. Once again it stereotypes men as idiots in and around the kitchen. Since some of this comes from Peter Ramirez's own life perhaps I assume too much knowledge for dads who stay at home.

Should we be happy there is a SAHD comic strip or unhappy that it once again make men look like fools (The Sunday strip showed "hector" learning that the stove turned on and flames appeared when you did...not out of control fire or anything, just gas burner flames.)

Thoughts gents?

Here is the home page: www.raisinghector.com
and the strip for today: http://www.comicspage.com/raisinghector/raisinghector.html

It's important to be able to

It's important to be able to laugh at ourselves- even if the humor is exxagerated silliness. I really enjoyed Louis C.K.'s series on HBO about him being an at-home Dad, even though it included the ideas that tween daughters are "assholes" and men are generally lazy and inept.

But that still doesn't mean that the comic strip in question might be lame. Most comics are pretty awful except for Calvin and Hobbes.

But…

You’ve got to admit it; there are times in our daily routine where we feel the need to document the hilarity of it all. I think once this guy gets in deep and gets some on him; his tune will change for the better.
I guess we have to take it like a compliment that somebody will write, even jokingly about our exploits.
Maybe this guy in real life is a klutz and couldn’t hack being a cop without being killed (see how he got us riled with just his pen and paper?) and added to his daily home routine he causes a lot of self induced punishment. I for one will not read anymore Hector’s antics as I get enough on my own.
That’s a great thing about America, freedom of speech and the right of choice.

Have a great day!

Rocky V

Yeah, I am full of hope that the quality is poor because he is new at this, but everything from the sample comics to the character descriptions sound so much like EVERYTHING I have heard before, "The Old school dad", the "Mom who is really in charge", and the taking of the hat and nightstick, and replacing it with, WAIT FOR IT, a "mom" apron, AHHH, hilarity ensues. All of this is about as innovative as Rocky V (now of course I have not seen Rocky V, but I have seen Rocky III a couple of times so that should make up for it).
All of this of course does not take away from the pretty inspiring story of the authors life, and, as a friend of mine pointed out, the "Old World" sensibilities that come along with Hispanic Culture would make AHDing more difficult, BUT if it ain't funny...

It's been done, and better

These are required viewing:
1983's Mr. Mom http://imdb.com/title/tt0085970/
Daddy Day Care http://imdb.com/title/tt0317303/

and maybe not so much on TV:
1960's The Andy Griffith Show http://imdb.com/title/tt0053479/
My Two Dads http://imdb.com/title/tt0092410/
Full House http://imdb.com/title/tt0092359/

I'm sure I missed something better on TV?

TV Dads

I believe the Courtship of Eddie's Father was about a single dad....but no SAHDs, yet.

it's up to us to write the SAHD sitcom that becomes the next Friends or Seinfeld....

Josh

SAHD Since August 2005
