I am a PhD candidate who is working on a research dissertation regarding the stay at home father and working mother relationship. The study is a face to face interview with the mother. The requirements include:

Women in heterosexual  marriage

Work full time outside of the home

Husband must be unemployed, stay at home caretaker of child/children

Must have a child/children ages 1-4

Both must be biological parents

This study is to fulfill requirements to graduate. If your family is willing to participate, please contact me at cgoodner@capellauniversity.edu. I appreciate your help!

Cassie,

Good luck with your research. I would be willing, but I do coaching work & own a couple businesses & websites that generate revenue.

I hope you find a good sample & share a link to any public results you publish here.

Thanks!

Thanks for responding. I would be happy to post a link to the final study. If you have any advice on places to post to reach this population, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks again,

Cassie

Unemployed?

Cassie, you may want to qualify "unemployed." It is a myth that at-home dads are "unemployed." First of all, like at-home moms, we don't believe we are unemployed... the job of an at-home parent is quite a demanding one. Secondly, as Nation points out above, a large majority of us at-home dads bring in some income to our families. To put this in perspective, review two conflicting Census Reports. One on stay-at-home fathers from 2010 states there is 154,000 at-home dads. The other, released Monday, is on fathers as the primary caregiver which the Census reports 32% of all fathers who are married are the primary caregiver of their children which computes to roughly 2 million dads. The difference is employment. The first report is based on fathers who do not work, are not looking for work and are not going to school. The second is all fathers, employed or not. The implication here is that most men who are at-home dads bring in some income. For some, the income is significant. For others it is just enough to pay a babysitter once a month so he and his wife can go out to dinner.

My point is that you need to come up with something like "earn less than 10% of the family's income" or something like that, not unemployed, because, frankly, very few of us are completely "unemployed."

I would be happy to talk to you further about your project. Feel free to email me at president@daddyshome.org.

Great points Al. Another

Great points Al.

Another option is to look it in terms of time:
- How many hours per week is the father focused on the children
- a minimum amount of time focused on generating income/revenue

All great points. One thing

All great points. One thing I can say for sure is that a dissertation is a learning experience! I would love to do another study with Al's suggestion, on stay at home dads that do work and provide financially and compare that study with the one I'm currently doing. Does contributing financially change the dynamics in a family? If so, how? There are so many things you can do with research and I am intrigued by learning new ideas and theories.
