I run my screen at 1280x1024 I understand that 1024x768 is a very common resolution. My question is what image width is preferred for posting in threads? Something that most users will view comfortably..

640x480 for me
My screen is 1600x1200 and I keep my browser close to 1024x768. I've found that an image size if 640x480 will fit nicely even if someone is still using 800x600. Most of time I'm too lazy to rescale though :(
Resizing Code
There is BBC resizing code at http://www.athomedad.org/filter/tips/5#filter-bbcode-0 if you don't want to mangle the pix. 3rd paragraph down under Displaying images, pretty straight forward to size down to 640x480. Just make sure your opening and closing tags are correct. This size 640x480, I have found to work the best without invading the right frame or side shared border.
