My brother recently became a SAHD. I'm trying to get him the perfect xmas gift. Does anyone have good suggestions?

How old are the kids?

If he is a new dad as well as a SAHD he might like the book Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads It's a fun read and hidden within all the humor and satire are a few good ideas!

Try this maybe...

The Stay At-Home Dad Handbook by Peter Baylies was really helpful for me, but the BEST gift you can give is a membership to his local zoo, children's museum, or gym (if he isn't already a member at any of those). My brother gave me a zoo membership one year, and an aquarium membership the next year, and it was the best gift I could have gotten.

Depends on the age of the kids

If he's just expecting his first child, then a zoo membership might be better NEXT year, in my opinion. However, if he's just switching roles, and/or has kids older than 1, I concur with the zoo/aquarium/science center pass idea.

Just like always

I'd recommend getting him something connected with his hobbies or interests.

One of the toughest things a new SAHD can go through is to have everyone thinking that he is drastically different in some way because he is now the primary care-giving parent. If he is feeling that vibe and everyone gets him baby books and baby stuff instead of hunting ammo or 'no scent' or fishing lures or grill accessories or bad art or sports posters, he just might get annoyed.

Yes.

I'm with JimL. Get him something stereotypically masculine that you know he would like whether he's staying at home or not.

I have Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads at it is a fun little read. put that with Caring for Your Baby anf Young Child from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which is almost a baby owners manual, and he'll be set.

What he like?

Definitely find out what he likes. If he is into the stereotypical guy stuff, get him something from what he likes. If he likes beer -- that would really be a great gift idea. If he likes the theater, tickets to a show (movie or live depending on what kind of theater). But it all really comes down to knowing what he likes.

maid service

i know some people get weirded out by having a stranger clean their house but i would gladly welcome a cleaner to come like once a week so i wouldn't have to waste the two hours or so of my rare persoanl time consumed w/ laundry, vacuuming and tidying up

If you live nearby....

Babysitting time!!! I would give up my new Guitar Hero III Game (and yes I do wish they had Ukulele Hero) for a night out with my wife, with someone that I knew was going to do a good job looking after the kids.
On another topic, do any of you have the problem of finding their Christmas gift every year? With me doing most of the house cleaning it seems like at least 4 out of the last 10 years I have opened the; sock drawer, back seat of the car, hall closet, and the the "Crap, I wish I hadn't of seen that" experience. We have tried to have the designated gift area, but it seems like it has not worked so far. On the other hand it is a little reassuring that I am married to a wonderful woman that can't hide things from me very well.
