(note: I voted for Kerry in 2004, but the man can be a bit of a windbag...since I haven't yet heard his actual announcement, here's what I imagine it will sound like...)

John Kerry (in a stilted, stentorian tone): "Today I stand before you to endorse Barack Obama. A tall man. A skinny man. A black man. But I tell you in no uncertain terms that I've never been more certain in my certaintude that his message of hope and change is the kind of hopeful, changing-type message that this country needs in this time of needful hopelessness, and verily I say unto you that today, black is white, and in white, I mean the color of a good guy's hat in a Western movie, for white is the color of goodness and Senator Obama looks very good in white, and will look even better in the White House.

"I also want to tell you about my brother-in-arms, Donny, from my third tour of Viet Nam. Donny was a good bowler, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors... and bowling, and as a surfer he explored the beaches of Southern California, from La Jolla to Leo Carrillo and... up to... Pismo. He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would Donny. Donny, who loved bowling. And so, Theodore Donald Karabotsos, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince."

The Dude: "God damn you Kerry! You f***in' asshole! Everything's a f***in' travesty with you, man! And what was all that s*** about Vietnam? What the F***, has anything got to do with Vietnam? What the f*** are you talking about?"

Just trying to be funny

The first paragraph is just my riff on what I think Kerry's endorsement will sound like, the second and third are lifted from "The Big Lebowski". I've got an offbeat sense of humor, I guess... (probably from years of watching Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, The Simpsons and Stephen Colbert...)

I heard that Al Gore also

I heard that Al Gore also endorsed Barack. He gave his speech with Leonardo Dicaprio and a drowning polar bear by his side. To emphasize his points about the brilliance of Obama, he used a slide show with several graphs that indicated an exponential growth of Clinton's Offenses squared (or CO2 for short).

Then he got in his jumbo jet and flew home to his million dollar mansion in Tennessee, the one that uses more energy than any other home in the city.

I love IMDB.com

Sandy: I want you to kill every gopher on the golf course!
Carl Spackler: Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key...
Sandy: Not golfers, you great fool! Gophers! The *little* *brown*, *furry* *rodents* -!
Carl Spackler: We can do that; we don't even have to have a reason. All right, let's do the same thing, but with gophers -!

re: IMDB

You're welcome. It's hours and hours and hours of entertainment...

Brian: Please, please, please listen! I've got one or two things to say.
The Crowd: Tell us! Tell us both of them!
Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow ME, You don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals!
The Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!
Brian: You're all different!
The Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!
Man in crowd: I'm not...
The Crowd: Sch!

...and I'm on it, but without any pithy quotes:

Me too. I need more substance and actual positions, but for the time being, he's my guy.

And for anyone curious as to what Kerry actually said, here it is:

re: Kerry's endorsment/question

I'm not convinced that this endorsement will help Obama. I'm also not convinced Obama or Clinton can win in the south which leaves the door open for Edwards. This indecision stems from my belief that regardless of societal change (sahd - inlaws) the idea of a woman or black president might be too much for most of the "old fashioned" segment of our population to swallow. When will our eyes catch up to our brains?

re: endorsement

Oh, I'm not convinced either. Ultimately, it's coming down to old vs. young --- my dad is adamant in his support for Hillary, just as I'm adamant in my support for either Edwards or Obama (please, not Hillary...) It feels like a bit of a generational divide. I think it's going to continue to come down to that throughout the primaries. If enough young(ish --- I'm 37) people come out to vote for Obama, he'll win. If not, he won't.

That said, the one thing that my dad and I agree on about this field of Dems is that we'll both vote for whomever the eventual nominee is. No President Huckabee/Guiliani/McCain/Romney for me, thanks!

A chance for Hope

Don't overestimate the south's bigotry. The bigots will likely vote republican anyway. And Iowa should be an indication that rural midwesterners will vote for a minority.

Plus, there are a lot of women and a lot of blacks in the south. 80% of Atlanta is black, for instance. Women and black voters will decide this election. If they get their asses out the door and into the voter booths.

endorsement

you hit it on the head. There has to be a few dad's or half them judging by the polls that don't agree with us but I'm voting and hoping that the youngsters do as well.

This should be a great time of year for your documentary. Have fun! If you want some crazy liberal stuff come to Madison. Matt will attest to that as well.

Media Misses Story: Obedwards Wins New Hampshire

This is an interesting take on things...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-loeb/media-misses-story-obedw_b_80930.html

I'd love it if Obama and Edwards just said "Hey, we're a team." That would truly be a potent combo.

Hmm...

I don't know about that article. It assumes that those people who vote for Edwards would automatically vote for Obama if Edwards were not an option, but more than a few would just as likely give their vote to Hillary as they would Obama. Nobody voted for their favorite second place candidate, so he can't prove his argument. And combined votes don't count. This was an election for individuals not teams.

yes, except...

There have been multiple articles on the HuffPo and elsewhere that say that Edwards and Obama's teams have been talking about the possibility of one becoming the other's VP candidate, most likley Obama/Edwards.

What is it that leads you to believe that Edwards supporters would support Hillary over Obama? I really don't think that many Obama or Edwards voters would put Hillary as their second choice. There's a stark contrast between Obama and Edwards on one side and Hillary on the other (at least in their rhetoric.)

Hilary would be my 2nd choice

I'm all for edwards but would vote for Hilary over Obama as my second choice. Both Hilary and Edwards realize that conflict is going to be necessary. Obama doesn't strike me as having made this realization. Although, he is nice to listen to....that being said I'll be happy with any of the three of them.

My conservative southern grandparents have voted for the last 10 winners in pres. elections (including gore). They won't vote for Obama or Hilary in spite of my best efforts over the holidays. I hope this doesn't speak to their electability. They like McCain a lot, let's hope Mit and Mike take him out.

I swear I don't work for the Obama campaign...

...but found this on his web site. I was digging around because everyone seems to be saying they don't know where he stands on the issues. While I haven't read this cover to cover, this seems to cover a lot of his ideas. And he did write two books...

re: Hilary would be my 2nd choice

Hmm...well, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I feel fairly strongly that Hillary belongs too much to the establishment, and our government just doesn't work very well these days.

In the end, I'll vote for Hillary if she's the nominee. But I prefer to back a candidate I believe strongly in, and in that case I'd be voting against the Republican candidate instead of really casting a vote FOR Hillary.

Candidates

Thought I'd throw in a comment on this one. First off, I'm not a political person at all, but have been watching the candidates a bit this time around. You guys seem to be either for Obama or Hillary, which is great, but my problem is deciding between the two. I like both for different reasons. My vote will most likely be one of the two, unless something out of left field happens that changes my mind.

I think this election is going to have the most voter turnout in a long time. Not because of older people or minorities, just because people seem to be tired of the way things are and want serious change. The big question for everyone is picking the person they think will bring about that change. When's the last time you can remember so many different candidates almost all on equal grounds? I may not like some of them, but other people seem to. Huckabee is practically a nobody here in New England, but in other parts of the country, he's huge and no one knows Mitt. I think McCain will get a lot of he older folk vote. Just a gut feeling. He seems OK, but I don't know enough about him to make a good call on him.

By the way, PLEEEEASE don't go for Mitt. I've see what he has done and what he can do and I don't like it. I have absolutely no problem with his religion, I could care less about any of that, but I live in MA and have seen him in first hand action. Please stay away...for all of our own good! :)

re: GO FRED!!!!!

Shh...he's napping. Don't wake the old guy. He gets very cranky when you interrupt his naps. He just might run over you in his rented red pickup truck ...er, I mean the red pickup truck he owns and drives every day. He wouldn't stage something like arriving at rallies in a borrowed pickup to show his down-hominess, would he? What do you think he is, an actor?

Ah...can't resist taking a jab at ol' "jowly"...

That said, I agree with you. Fred does indeed need to go. Maybe he can fit the rest of them in the bed of that truck...

Will anyone be better, stronger, faster?

I hate to be a killjoy but given the state of the Nation I’m not sure any candidate can make things better via political policy. Iraq is clearly the next administrations problem as are the prospects for an expansion of that war which has taken longer to fight than WW2, as is the deteriorating American economy, and add the mortgage and housing crisis, and the refusal of the U.S. to participate in the Kyoto Accord. The list, obviously, goes on and on.

The one thing I am sure of is that things can keep getting worse if the present “government doesn’t work,” post-Goldwater agenda isn’t reversed.

I don’t feel that politics to too far off topic. We are all parents and want a healthy and vibrant nation for our children to grow up in.

As for me? I believe in voting my conscious, so I’m for Obama. Hillary snubbed one of her staunchest supporters in Michael Moore by refusing to be interviewed by him. That’s just stupid. Not to mention that Edwards is the only candidate with actual plans for action should he be elected. I’m idealistic and would love to see a fellow idealist in the White House but if Edwards gets the nomination the I’ll vote for him, but come Super Tuesday I’m an Obama man.

I also believe that if Obama isn’t elected this year he will be in the future.

Be Seeing You.

what presidental front runner can be non-establishment?

What a commentary on our system that the "non establishment" presidental hopeful has raised over $100 million!? 2/3 of that from PACs, corporations, and deep pocketed democratic donors. Obviously, he has spent a considerable amount on excellent pr and marketing.

Edwards hasn't taken any money from PACs or corporations.

Rove had an interesting piece in the Wall Street Journal.
Here is a snippet:

"But more interesting than dissecting the pollsters is dissecting the election returns, precinct by precinct. Sen. Hillary Clinton won working-class neighborhoods and less-affluent rural areas. Sen. Barack Obama won the college towns and the gentrified neighborhoods of more affluent communities. Put another way, Mrs. Clinton won the beer drinkers, Mr. Obama the white wine crowd. And there are more beer drinkers than wine swillers in the Democratic Party."

Where is Ross Perot when you need him???

.02 $ here
I live right outside of the beltway ( DC ) the look and feel of the government might be different here. The republicans are the reason my wife and I are in this beautiful house and have a wonderful kid and can afford to keep me home to watch KGA... I'm not bashing any of the democrats or their runners ( except stone face. she needs some sexual relations ) I am just saying it's been a good run for us..

Obama Fact

Unlike other candidates Obama's campaign refuses to accept contributions from Washington lobbyists and political action committees. Were you talking about Obama or some other candidate when you were talking about "non-establishment"? Most of Obama's money comes from private donors, more than any other candidate.

Rove is not the best source of info. It turns out that he is a lying douche bag, who will do anything to win for his party.

Ohh...

I get it now. It was the black and white, Vietnamese surfing and golf that confused me at first.

But, what is golf? What is a movie? The words kind of ring a bell, but I'm just not remembering.

As for my vote, I am waiting until the "Vinnie the Pooh" and "Dirk, the Fourth and Forgotten Chipmunk" ticket finally comes together. Vinnie has promised free candy for all, and Dirk has promised to clean my room if elected. Plus, yesterday, Dirk said that he loved everybody. Right now they are really going after each other, but I think they will join forces in the end.
