Hey guys! I was just curious what is your one unique pastime/hobby that you do that is a little out of the norm? Mine would be I love looking through cookbooks. Doesn't matter what kind, I like them all. I do, however, especially like those cookbooks that are put together by schools, churches, businesses, whatever. I don't know why I like doing this, but I always have. That's one of my quirks.

I also

Love to look through cookbooks. But I guess my favorite past time hobby would be crossword puzzles. It's not unique or out of the norm, but I like it. Lately though, at night I watch VH1. They've got the dumbest most awsomest shows out there. Rock of Love II for example is a freakin' train wreck and I can't not watch it.

I love model trains. I have a city in progress in my garage on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. It's a few years from being done, but will include cop cars and ambulances with working lights, smoking factories, and a playground. I have the golf course started, but it needs some work.

That's pretty cool. My grand dad had an enormous train set in his basement. He made all the landscape himself. I remember ,as a kid, going over there and playing for hours.

I throw darts competitively

Been doing it since 99. I got to the big tourneys when I can . My God daughters dad is in the national dart hall of fame and we play in league together. I have also thrown against John Part ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Part ) on a few occasions.

i see dead people

I scan the obits every day, not for people I know, but because I love to read the ones for old WASPs, you know, the types whose daddies were doctors or lawyers, went to Miss Porter's or Groton, followed by Yale and Harvard, lived on trust funds while traveling through Europe. I find the old-money world a fascinating one.

Two Things

I love sitting down to a good mind-bending session with my GAMES magazine, and I love reading or just flipping through any DIY book or handbook. You all do know what DIY stands for now, right? :p

Steam

When I get a chance Ilove to shvits an afternoon away at one of the Russian/Turkis Saunas in the city. I know we ere all vrain washed at about 11 to say "Bath House!" straiten our spin and pull up our pants, but these places are an the leveal andn realy relaxing. My fave is The Wall Street Bath and Spa. (Oddly enough on Fulton Street.)

Sndoony is right down the street but it's usualy crowded and a litle noisy. Granted everyone is speaking Russian so I have a little solitude.

Holy crap! there is nothing better than having a steam. Well, there are things you can do during your steam that make it better. Damn, I love my wife.

Does resisting the urge to murder the ex on a daily basis count as a past time? Because if it does, that's mine.

LOL

Matt, Gaming,
Too funny!

Matt: There are special places here in sin city where couples can go to...ah have a rejuvenating steam. Or you can just go to Hedonism.

Gaming: Ya know, I thought about saying my past time was imagining myself with an exacto knife cutting the tendon of my erstwhile neighbor for being such a "see you next Tuesday," and all around nut job. Tendon you ask? Why yes, she is a violinist. She made no changes in her life once my daughter was born and did what ever she felt was reasonable 12 hours a day regardless of our needs as parents, and that we could hear everything they did upstairs, everything. I asked her to stop playing only twice – and that’s 8 hours a day of scales and fours mind you - she flatly said no. My wife and I moved but I have to say it relives the stresses to fantasize about the tendon in her right hand balling up in her forearm. Ahh…

Ever see “Brain Candy?” “It’s a pill to give worms to ex-gilrfriends.”

martial arts

I train in Hapkido twice a week, and Aikido and Judo each up to twice a week when I have time. After a day of teething or toddler stubborn-ness, it helps to throw people. :D

I also build GeoTrax with my son. Not as cool as the model train up top, but fun for us.

Hapkido

It's similar to Aikido, but more brutal, with more joint manipulation and pressure points. Aikido's aim is to protect your opponent and Hapkido's is to make sure they don't keep coming. Both are good because people of any size can use them, so it's good for women to study too. But there are hardly ever women in Hapkido, more in Aikido. I like it because it's a unique style, not many people study it, but it's one of the more practical styles.

I haven't updated my blog in a while, but there is some history there. I'll take a look tonight and add some more info too now that I think about it. It's flow-like-water.blogspot.com.

Me! Pick Me!

Where you live Ironcat? I would love to try Scuba Diving sometime; it always looks like it would be fun to do. The closest I've ever gotten was snorkeling in Hawaii. You can pick someone else for the hunting though. I come from a family of hunters, and much to my families dismay, I don't share in that passion. I'm not against hunting, just don't enjoy doing it.

GeoCaching & More

My favorite hobby is GeoCaching. Search my blog (www.Hail2Pitt.org) for that and you'll find tons of stories, esp if you get into stuff a year or two ago... Been slow since we moved to NJ just due to some timing issues. I'll be back on the trail hard-core next spring.

if you don't know what GC is, basically, and stealing this from a t-shirt, it's using billion-dollar military spy satellite technology to search for Tupperware hidden in the woods.

Second is building hot wheels tracks - we have literally a couple hundred feet of hot wheels track and > 150 cars. My 7 year old, and now 3 year old, and I build quite elaborate tracks that span multiple rooms, and with accelerators, go back up to gain more distance. The problem is that rarely can they last more than 12 hours since we usually need the space. If only there were a way to monetize this hobby!

Cheers,
PittCaleb

Saving the princess

I forgot, don't know if it counts as a hobby or not, but we also like saving Princess Peach from Bowser and Bowser Jr. around here (currently on the Wii).

BTW, a 3 year old has no idea if his wireless controller works or not!

fishing / hunting / etc...

dkremers & Gaming,
I live in the West Palm Beach area... it's an awesome spot for SCUBA. The Keys are only a couple of miles drive South and that's pretty much as amazing a dive site as you'll find in the U.S. but up here in WPB we are a little closer to the Gulfstream, which means we get colder water and bigger fishies. Plus lots of wrecks.
Most of my diving is done through charters since I don't have a boat, but our beaches are so shallow that even shore diving can be a blast.
I used to spearfish pretty regularly until I accidentally closed a tailgate on my gun. Ouch. Now I do lobster in season, and sightseeing the rest of the year.
For hunting down here we have to drive to middle of the state but it's alright. We get small deer, lotsa birds, and giant hogs. My first hog ever was 215# with a knife.

P.S. I is a gamer too when I can get the boy to sleep.

ham radio,geocaching,photography..

I am really into ham radio(amateur radio)I also like geocaching and really into photography.I guess starting in april(when we are expecting our son)I will slow down on the buying of ham radios, and do more with the photography:)

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body,
but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming--'WOW, what a ride!!

Nerdy

It's nerdy, but I enjoy rock tumbling. I also sometimes listen to my police scanner (my wife forces me to do it with headphones, so it's only in the evenings after the kid's asleep).

Welcome to the site, hd-dude, and congrats on the upcoming baby!

DIY, Geeks and Ham's Oh My!

RandyFielding, what kind of DIY, around the home, or stuff like hackaday.com or dansworkshop.com ?

hd-dude, I was studying the ARRL handbook in hopes of getting my license, unfortunately where I live decent antennas are not even close to a reality, and while we do have a repeater here, most of the guys doing it seem to be more SAR people which, while I greatly respect them, I don't really fit in with that crowd. One of these days when we move and get a real place I'm going to have to see about working towards that goal, unfortunately by then the left over HAMs might be gone.

JonMcP: I used to love sitting and listening to the Vancouver RCMP scanners, that were being played over the Internet, if you look around some HAM repeaters in the south are broadcasting over the net too, although generally I found them to be quiet.

As for my past time, I can't get enough of hack sites, I love when people take technology and just screw with it in a way that manufacturers didn't' expect or never wanted. I think the armchair and garage scientists working on their alternative energies, and refusing to let money get in the way of their dreams, are the coolest people in the world... even if they don't always accomplish what they set out to do. The programmers, and hackers that give every day selflessly, so that I can learn how to do something with no cost to myself, you are all my hero's.

Peace.

Oh, and photography

I love photography too, if any of you more experienced photographers are ever interested in sharing pictures and giving me some tips, let me know, I have a Pentax *ist DL with generic out of the box lens on it. I also have a lightbox I made from scrap crap.

My photographic brother from another mother! I too have an *ist DL (at least for a little while longer, got my eye on a K10D or K200D). Woot for being a devotee to the bastard child of DSLRs!

I'm the laughing stock of everywhere.

People make fun of my *ist, well.. that's not true, people that know very little about photography say "WOW, what an AMAZING camera that is! That looks, so EXPENSIVE, and it must take AWESOME pictures!! OMGZ!!" ... something like that. Truth is everyone else that is into photography knows damn well my (our) camera isnt' worth much these days as far as even serious amateur photography goes. But, it was on clearance (display model) and beats the crap out of a P&S so I can't complain. If you get one of those K models, I'm afraid I will have to hate you out of sheer jealousy -- sorry but there's not really a way around that. ;)

Got a photo album up? I just finished writing one using Picasa API for my site, neither the album nor the site will be up for a little bit though. Let me know if you have one going and would like to share photos, I don't get out much, and can't afford batteries, so that kind of limits me -- but I did hook my camera up to a 6V Sealed Lead Acid battery that's about the size of two packs of smokes, it's a bitch, but it fits in the bag at least, I'm sure I could get out and take more with a little motivation. :)

I use flickr

Scoff as they will, there's nothing cooler than being able to use any lens produced in the last 35 years. The Canons and the Nikons can't claim that. I've just picked up a prime 200mm f4 m42 mount lens that was an absolute steal. You should see the looks I've received at airshows shooting with the DL.

Re: Just a had second

Taken at the Tennessee Aquarium, Chatanooga, Tennessee, on the bottom floor of the Ocean Journey building. She was sitting in one of those acrylic bubbles that stretches into the main tank. Light from overhead was what filtered down through the tank. ISO800, f1.7, 1/25th (handheld), using my Pentax-M 50mm. An old manual lens that can usually be had for a song on eBay. It's my favorite lens, but least used.
