Toothpaste - sweet or minty?

My wife and I have had this discussion a few times. Dylan currently uses a sugary berry flavored toothpaste that tastes like jelly. I'm of the belief that the sooner my son gets used to minty toothpaste, instead of switching to mint when he's older, the better it'll be. I always hated brushing my teeth because I didn't like the minty toothpaste becuase I'd been brought up til 4 or 5 with sugary blueberry flavored paste. She argues that it doesn't matter what the paste tastes like; it's more important that he gets into a routine.

My question. For those of you with older children, has this been an issue or is it based on the individual child? It's quite possible that I'm making something out of nothing....but well, I'm stalling because today during naptime is cleaning time.

Tom's of Maine

My daughter (2.5) has been brushing her teeth, with or without our help, for about a year. Tom's of Maine, is not only all natural but comes in a host of flavors. My fave is fennel - black jelley bean - and they make a cinamint all of which are naturaly sweet. Their speramint is really good and is my daughter fave.

RE: Toms of Maine

Thanks, this will help. I'll take some time and get a better alternative.

I can't imagine why they would quit making fennel-black jelly bean

Anything productive? Matt

What flavor/method do you use? Whiskey flavor possibly? If so, send some my way.

This is really very, extremely serious....I'm in a crisis. Don't be so clever and light-hearted all the time. My kids teeth might fall out!

Ok, I'm better. Thanks for listening.

Anti-Dentite??

Joel,
Ask your Dentist or Hygenist and more than likely they will direct you to Tom's as well (mine did). My concern was that it seemed like an oxymoron to teach your children to brush their teeth with toothpaste that tastes like candy (???). After finding nothing on the shelves @ the local grocery, we settled on Tom's and got the generic spearmint, which is not too overpowering, and volia - Now Olivia brushes her teeth like a champ and doesn't miss the "bubblegum" flavor (and she's none the wiser).
I also feel that advertising and marketing invades every "cavity" of our lives and candy flavored toothpaste is part of the problem. Your wife is correct about the routine, so good luck with the process!

My bad

I forgot your are sick and have lost your sense of humor.
We actually use Tom's of Maine Silly Strawberry for lIndsay. They have with and w/o flouride. We had non-flouride until Lindsay learned to spit. Now, thanks to Lindsay, her whole pre-school class can spit like hillbillies. It's great!!

Re: Anti-Dentite and My Bad

Paddyrat,

The whole toothpaste tasting like candy thing really bothers me as well. Thanks for sharing your conversation with the dentist. In terms of the marketing invading everything, it made me think of a Tom Cruise Movie in the future preventing murders (I can't remember the title)...anyway in this movie some type of scanner reads you eye and tailors each marketing/store front to your individual purchasing history. Not unlike, frequent shopper cards but much more invasive.

And Matt, you're right. I've lost my sense of humor for the better part of a week and it's really starting to grate on me. If Dylan could adequately express his feelings, he would tell you the same. His feelings, since he's been sick, are expressed with crying, crying and crying. It's like he's preparing me for the new baby.

Loss of Humor

Arm & Hammer makes a tasty toothbrushing treat for kids. It comes in an orange box and you can even use it for cooking in the kitchen. I keep an open box in my refrigerator to keep the smell of rotting produce and leftover fish under control. Every Saturday night, when my kids brush, I wet their little toothbrushes under the kitchen faucet and then swirl the bristles in the open box of Arm & Hammer from the fridge.

Try it, your kids will fondly look back on their early days of toothbrushing with Daddy for the rest of their lives!

I think I'd rather have my conspiracy nightmares in animated actors rather than human ones.

Hmmmm makes me think, who is the most menacing animated villian?

Lightspeed

Those would be "Lightspeed Briefs."

In all seriousness, I can't say I've had a problem deciding what type of toothpaste to use when Mac started brushing her own teeth. Toothpaste magnates market sweet flavors because it's something that kids will enjoy. Personally I find there no need for specific "kids only" toothpaste. What's more important is consistency. Who cares what it tastes like, so long as you are getting them to do it.

Our Choice

With our oldest 2 we use a regular kids toothpaste with fluoride in it. They are old enough to spit and understand that you shouldn't swallow toothpaste. Our youngest is 3 and we use Orajel Toddler Training Toothpaste with him because he won't stop swallowing even though we remind him not to every time we/he brushes.

Used baking soda...

Since gross is already out there. Why not use urine? It's sterile, its free and in Matts case it whiskey flavored...
seriously we use cat in the hat toothpaste, bubble gum flavored, its not that sweet....

I am lucky, the boy wants to

I am lucky, the boy wants to be just like me... (go figure) He has been rejecting the 'baby' toothpaste in flavor of 'adult' paste for as long as he's been brushing. Granted I had to do the brushing at first since it's got fluoride and all, but he's always wanted "dada toothbrush"

Thanks Gross

It's nice to know I have options if he doesn't like minty or sweet. I'm also disappointed in myself for not thinking of these myself.

Mint could to too "hot"

My son says no to Mint, it's just too hot. Berry is good, or of you can find Orange flavor, that'll have a smooth transition to adult Orange.
