I was asked today, what kind of work I do. I said I was a stay at home dad and had been an engineer and a teacher before that. The conversation thus ended very quickly. Has anyone else run into this situation? One time, when asked, I said I was retired and that actually generated more questions and kept the conversation going. Typically people want to know how one survives without payed employment. Ron
Is SAHD conversation killer?
i've had that happen.
i have to tailor my response to the crowd/person that asked me.
it's like saying you are a waiter and then having to explain that you really are an actor or musician or writer or something and that waiting tables is just a means to an end.
people can't fathom somebody just being dad and nothing else.
that's not to say that we all don't have vocations or hobbies or some other shit going on.

Happens to me but I have two answers:
1) I'm a writter. Then I let them figure everything else out.
2) I'm an AHD, then joke that I have plenty of time to talk if you like. That tends to smooth things over and the person I'm talking to asks more questions about being an AHD and all is well. Many want to know what it is we Dads do but don't know how to ask about it.
Remember dad9806, you are still and engineer, just not working as one. :-)
