Holy crap!

I was sort of getting bored of this site because there was never any random discussion so I went back to some of the mom groups I am in.

Boy was I surprised when I checked back in! Where did everyone come from? I'm so glad there is so much chatter now, might have to check back in more often now.

Hey Guys, TT not disagreeing

Hey Guys,
TT not disagreeing with you mate but I believe “spontaneity,” or “unpredictability” are better words than “randomness.” Randomness is a word in common usage but isn’t in the dictionary and lacks a common definition. (Randy where are you when I need you :-)

In all seriousness in the past few months this have really taken off here at AtHomeDad and it has been a lot more fun as well as still maintaining its supportive roll for AHDs as well as a fantastic information base.

"Randomness"

"Randomness" IS in the dictionary. It is a term used in my field of study: Chemical Engineering. The more proper term that us Chemical Engineers use though is "entropy". However, the word "randomness" is defined in many modern dictionaries as "the quality of lacking any predictable order or plan".

My Man Randy

"Ask and ye shall receive."

I need a new dictionary.

1. (thermodynamics) a thermodynamic quantity representing the amount of energy in a system that is no longer available for doing mechanical work; "entropy increases as matter and energy in the universe degrade to an ultimate state of inert uniformity"
2. the quality of lacking any predictable order or plan

However I stand by my claim that "spontaneity" is a better word in this instance.

Just Curious.

What is the difference between randomness and chaos?

Is it that randomness has no predictable order, but there still may be some sort of unpredictable "order?" Whereas chaos is the lack of any order, predictable or unpredictable. Or, is there really no difference?

Thanks :-)

Thanks TickTock,
I actually know all those tidbits. And I've a copy of Strunk and White right here on my desk and have Bill Bryson's "Dictionary of Troublesome Words" right next to it. :-)

I love words and their usage. My wife is a copy writer so I differ to her when it comes to a word and how it should be used. Randomness is a word (that is unless you have the dictionary my mum was given when she went to collage) in the dictionary but, it's common usage now stems from the often misused word random. That is to say people use sentences like: "The room was full of random people,” is technically correct but “random” has become a catch all phrase and lazy way to express yourself.

I’m not accusing anyone here of that but we have all heard it. It like the word “like,” I can’t talk to any one under the age of 30 for fear of asking them not to use the words like or random. But, randomness is an extension of the overuse and sometimes misuse of the word random many simply assumed the word randomness had meaning.

As we all know “ain’t” isn’t a word but it’s in the dictionary as is “discombobulate,” but they are all in common usage. In fact Ain’t shows up as incorrect on a Windows spell check, and”that is, like, sooo, random a word not to be right, right?”

Anyway, this is fun.

Be Seeing You.

too: The number of years normally wasted in a regular college prior to attending culinary school.

And I went to a state school for a trade, academics weren't exactly the priority. So I'm sorry if you thought I was zinging you. I was not. I was asking a legit question.

Peace to all

Understiod

I have been "called out" for my spelling on this board - for some reason or other - by a few people. I thought as adults, and fathers we are all mautre enough to let a few typos or missspeling slide. That however isn't the case, and my guard is up.

Appology accepted. :-)

Too = also
To = –preposition 1. (used for expressing motion or direction toward a point, person, place, or thing approached and reached, as opposed to from): They came to the house.
2. (used for expressing direction or motion or direction toward something) in the direction of; toward: from north to south.
3. (used for expressing limit of movement or extension): He grew to six feet.
4. (used for expressing contact or contiguity) on; against; beside; upon: a right uppercut to the jaw; Apply varnish to the surface.

I went to art school.
