Okay...there have been lots of posts about sports in here (being a guys place that makes sense) but I'm betting I'm not the only guy in here who doesn't really do the sports thing. Sure, I love watching my kids play soccer; I love going to a live basketball game; I love watching the Olympics; I love swimming; I even love the demolition derby. That being said, I don't consider sports to be a part of my hobbies or interests. Who else in here really doesn't care one way or the other about sports? I was just curious.

I don't care about sports...

but I completely understand those who do. I grew up in a UK Basketball household, and I played (failed at) sports when I was a kid, such as tennis and soccer. I still like to coach soccer because it's fun.

You're not alone

I don't care one bit about professional or college sports. I will play sports, but I'd much rather be doing something myself, instead of watching it on TV or tracking someone else's stats. A lot of the sports I like (skiing, running, hiking, climbing) tend to be for my own sake or for adventure's sake, rather than for the thrill of pummeling the competition, though I do also enjoy doing pretty much anything with friends who aren't hard-core knuckleheads.

I do like watching the olympics, and I like going to a live game once in a while.

It's just following professional sports that is completely uninteresting to me.

In a past life, when I worked at a suit-and-tie corporate job, a co-worker friend (who was also a non-sports person) and I had an ongoing joke where we'd exchange notes on all of the Monday morning sports news that we didn't care about. That way, we could each manage a conversation with the sports-heads (mostly our bosses) in the office...

In any case, I think there's been somewhat of a decline in the whole sports-centric thing over the last 10 or 20 years. It seems that there are plenty of guys who fit into this category now.

Competition

I admire the skill and talent it takes to compeet as an athleet, and sometimes I can enjoy the drama of the Red Sox finaly winning but I could never get behind a team or sit through a gamw without getting board. It's odd becuaemyfather loooves football and collage basketball, and we used to watch it together but it never stuck. I knew I could look up who one in the paper the next day. Granted I always had my noes in a history book and my father used to joke, "the North wins you know." :-)

Ihave in the past 6 years become very intersted in Cycling and watch The Tour even without Lance.

But I also have to addmit so manyathleets seem like overpaid children acting out and never growing up. That can absoululty be an image or a public face but I prefer men like Arthur Ash to Dennis Rodman.

Confession- I don't like sports

I didn't watch the Superbowl (couldn't actually tell you who was playing, now that I think about it), don't go to the Carolina Panther's football games even though we live 5 blocks from the stadium and have only been to the Charlotte Bobcats (NBA) games twice because a vendor gave me tickets (in my old life before the kid). I also don't care for spectator "sports" such as NASCAR, although living in Charlotte I know a lot of folks who do. I do have a slight interest in ACC college basketball, but really only in March and only if I'm drinking.

While I'm getting this off my chest I'll also freely admit that I have no concept of how "fantasy football" works (none of my fantasies ever involve a football) other that a lot of folks spend a lot of time discussing it in the offices around the country.

Oh, and golf- I own two sets of clubs because when in the corporate world that's what I had to do to fit in. I F@#$@ING hate golf now, but my life is inundated with golf: my inlaws live on a course in Pinehurst, NC (golf fans will know where I'm talking about) and our wedding reception was at the Pinehurst country club off of #2. I would fit in a lot better with them and would probably be in heaven when we visited if I could stand the sport.

Ahh.... I feel much better. Thanks for listening.

By the way- I'd not ever slam sports fans- I can totally see how you can get into it. That and most of them could beat me up.

Fantisy Football

Now far as I am able to tell Fastisy Footbasll is a game that uses actual players stats and abilities. You draw these players like you would a draft in the real game. You then use statistics to play a quasi real game for football.

So the fantisy is that you own this team and you play other teams and can have ternaments etc.

A friend of mine used toplay in ternaments for a game called "Squad Leader." A different type of beast bieing a war game but since I was interested in learing he showed me the 800 page rule book and I said no thanks.

No Way!

JonMcP are you serious in that post up there? You don't like football? You don't like golf? I didn't think that was possible! I mean seriously, you really don't like football or golf? Wow! I can't believe there are 2 of us like that not only on the earth, but in here. LOL! Not meaning to offend anyone, but I hate football and golf too.

I'm serious...

...I don't care for either sport at all. I also think I'm getting an itch to listen to some Air Supply! Look out board- there's two of us now :-)

Alright, that does it- you're officially added to my buddylist. And if I can make it to the convention I'll toast you with a wine cooler and we'll talk about anything but sports. Deal?

Count Me Among The Group

Besides NCAA college football, I could give a rat's behind about anything else. After all, I went to the University of Florida, so you pretty much have to enjoy college football to attend school there. At the bottom of my list are NASCAR and golf. I just don't see the excitement in making a left turn in an oval for 500 laps (or watching it!) or hitting a tiny, little ball and then subsequently having to chase it. I do keep up with the NFL a little bit, but I can't stand professional athletes. Like New said, many of them don't even know how to remotely act like the adults they are...just overpaid children whining and moaning all the time. "Boo hoo...my $7 million a year just isn't enough!" WAHHHHHHH!

The sports I do like participating in are ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf (I know, I know...somewhat ironic, huh?), volleyball, racquetball, and hiking.

Frisbee Golf

I've always been interested in but never tried it. That seems like something I could get into. I'm not aware of any Fantasy Frisbee leagues out there, so I'm sure it's not as popular as say, football.

Just got an email from my MIL- reminded me that I don't like baseball either (she's a HUGE Yankees fan, even dragging me to some of the games).

I do like sports . . .

like them a great deal. I follow most professional leagues, including some European football/soccer now. I'm addicted to golf (though I am playing terribly right now). Hiking, running, baseball, softball, etc. -- I love athletics.

Why post this here? Because I 100% believe that my and others obsession with sports in America is way off the deep end. It is utterly amazing how much money and time people devote to sports. I'm part of the problem. I try my best to bring some balance to my life by reading, gardening, etc., but sports dominate my landscape (outside of my family, of course!).

Step 1 -- admit you have a problem.
Step 2 -- continue to feed the beast.

More power to all of you who could care less about sports. I'm not with you, but I get it.

Nail on th head mate!
I find the Civil War (Whoes offical name is The War of the Rebellion belive it or not) facinating but some of the reenactors wanted to have a fist fight with me at Gettysburg because I told them I represented the 31 Ill. Vet-Volunteers and I dissagreed that at the battle of Vicksburg the men would have had pollished leather and brass. Sheesh.. swicth to decaf.

I also find the idea than all men like sport and follow them wierd. Not bad per se but wierd.

If You Thought Squad Leader Was Bad

You should see the boxes, mods, and rule books for "Advanced Squad Leader". My dad got me into all those old table-top war games when I was a kid. "Blitzkrieg", "Central Command", all the good Avalon Hill games.

But Squad Leader was too much for a 9-year old.

Advanced Squad Leader! The mind boggles. I play comp stuff nothing to remember.

But, since this is a sports thread I also have to admit I never understood spots games, Sport are laredy a game why make games out of a game.

AMR - Yea I know that one :-) I always thought War Betwen the States was the best but most folks dissagree.

Yes!

Wow! I'm overwhelmed that there are other guys like me out there! Growing up in a community where sports was everything (to the point that if you didn't like sports your sexuality was question by the other guys and even many of the women) I seriously am astonished that there are guys like me out there and in here. JonMcP I'm looking forward to meeting you at the convention; I hope you can get yourself there. I can't wait for some great conversation with you. JPhillip we'll even let you join us for a wine cooler if you can behave yourself :P. Let the love fest continue! LOL!

PS I can't believe I'm asking a sports question but...Randy, what's the difference between Frisbee Golf and Ultimate Frisbee? I always thought they were the same thing.

Edit: JonMcP do you have e-mail? There's no contact tab on your profile; I was going to e-mail something to you earlier, but couldn't so I figured while I was thinking about this now, I'd add it to this post.

I used to

love sports before kids. Football, basketball, baseball, frisbee golf, ulitimate frisbee, stock car racing, biking, hiking. Now I just read the headlines. I just can't sit through a whole game anymore. I can if I go to the game, though. I took my daughter to an Appalachian St. football game this year and had a blast. (No it wasn't the Michigan game) I just found a frisbee golf course here in town though, so I'll probably check it out.

I agree that going to games

I agree that going to games is much more fun that on the tube.
Growing up outside Hartford CT (teen pregnancy capital of the US) I used to go to Hartford Whalers games. Unfortunetly this only instilled in me a loathing for hockey which appears to be people skating back and forth pell-mell. Now I know there are things like a "hat trick," and the movie "Miricale" was great but it was all so dull and there is a half time. Football which is slightly less dull than hockey because at least you can see the play, until the ref comes out after 5.3 secs of play to throw a flag in the air, the clock stops, he confers with other refs and the crowd cheers for some reason and the annoucers prattle on about, "now here is a guy who when he puts his contacts in can see better." (John Madden acctualy said that.) And you become filled with the need to yell "GET ON WITH IT!" Humm... I lost my train of thought, oh yea, going to a game is more fun. I still think football is dull and I admit basketball is much more fun to see live.

Also being from CT we take Lacrosse, offical game of the great nation of Canada, very seriously. As serioulsy as they take football in Texas. Lacrosse always looked like fun. It is fast and violent and masculine.

We also have Jai alai in CT, I think Florida has it too, but man, that is as fixed as a suburban hound dog. It sooo obvious too. I went in collage with a couple of friends and we blindly bet on the players and I won! Thank you Rubens, I was cool and took us all out to eat.

"As fixed as a suburban hound dog"?!?! I love it! I've never heard that phrase before, but I've added it to my lexicon.

Another former Whaler fan

Hey New No. 2 -- I grew up in CT, too, and used to go to the occasional Whaler game, and watched a fair amount on TV. I also used to go to Jai-alai in Hartford when I was in college. I'm not a big gambler, but jai-alai was incredibly entertaining. Although also depressing because people who shouldn't have been spending their money were there to drop as much as they could in hopes of the big score. My friends and I invented a game called tennis jai-alai that we used to play to our own endless amusement.

And lacrosse is big in CT, although I hated all the LAX guys in my high school.

I love baseball, especially the Red Sox, but have never related to the complete and total absorption for sports, box scores, statistics, fantasy, etc. that some guys have. I also play baseball in an old guys league, which is a lot of fun, but I wouldn't really consider myself a "sports guy."

Frisbee Golf (Disc Golf) and Ultimate Frisbee

Frisbee Golf (or Disc Golf) is exactly like the game of golf, except that you use small frisbees (discs) instead of small balls and the holes are circular cages above the ground rather than little holes in the ground. Sounds easy, but good disc golf courses require a fair amount of skill in throwing the discs around obstacles and bends, etc. You can find out all you want to know about it from the Professional Disc Golf Association.

Ultimate Frisbee is like playing a game of soccer/football with a frisbee. The goals are set up like the end zones in football, so you only need to catch a frisbee across a line rather than throw it within a smaller fixed area. You can find out all you want to know about it from the Ultimate Players Association.

Ok

Ok DK and Jon, it's a wine cooler lovefest in Sacramento. I owe it to DK for all of my harrassment of him. But, I can not promise to behave myself. That Bartyles and James potion goes right to my head.

It goes straight to my head too- nothing worse than waking up with a new tattoo on your ass and the unnatural flavor of Bartles & Jaymes Melon Splash on your breath. I may only watch the wine cooler drinking while enjoying a different adult beverage- life's too short for me to drink that stuff (no offense to any other B&J fans)

I'm a Stamford native here. I too grew up going to Whalers game and the New Haven Nighthawks.

Actually, I do not care for wine coolers. But, I can tolerate them. DK does like them, and I teased him about it before. I would only be doing it to appease him. Beer tends to be the beverage of choice at the social events during the convention.

I hate to say this

I hate to say this becasue it gets sports guys angry but I can let it slip here...the first basball game I went to was at Fenway. Seattle v Boston. I...I got a ball at my first major leage game in 1977. I know guys who have been a team fan for deades and never got a ball, but me? Ball first time out.

dbrigham, CIA, is the Milford fronton still there? It was fun but I agree that the gamblers were a tad depressing.

I think we should all skip the beer, wine coolers, ect, and go for a real drink, mead.

Be Seeing You.
