Things included in this month's Mothering Magazine.

1. An article about the At-Home Dad Convention in November

2. An article that struggles to find something wrong with vaccines now that the scientific research has come back negative on a link between thimerosal and autism.

3. An article on baby food that insists that locally grown organic fruits and vegetables are more vibrant in color, and therefor better for you.

HOORAY FOR ARTICLE #1!!!

To be honest

I scan it for articles that disrespect science and logic, so that I can warn my wife to beware of those particular articles (basically all of them). My latest hobby is scientific inquiry (skepticism). I enjoy analyzing unusual or outrageous claims made in these types of magazines.

You can see that my original post reflects my thoughts on that subject. Debunking and dissecting crap-based claims is an annoying habit of mine lately, but my wife seems to be OK with it.

Sorry to bring that stuff here. I'm sure nobody here actually cares about the crap-based propoganda of Mothering Magazine. :)

The article about the Dad convention was cool, though.

Ha Ha

I know you're joking, but it's more about my enthusiasm for skepticism than it is about her. Just to be clear.

I knew that was going to be the comeback. Set myself up for it, didn't I?

Coincidentally

My wife gets so many free magazines subscriptions, it drives me crazy how many are laying around here. Then to top it off, she somehow occasionally finds a way to bring them home from the doctors and dentists office. Must be some form of magazine illness I haven't heard about yet.
Then just today we get the Mothering issue for the first time. I don't have much free time for magazines and when I do I sort of think similarly about much of the crap they write about, just whatever sells I suppose. Think I'll stick to TV for my occasional dose of mind rot.

"it's more about my enthusiasm for skepticism "

(LOL)
That's awesome TickTock!
I admit to peeking at articles in mags about parenting until I discovered that in the new vernacular "parent" means Mom. So many of those mags are Man hating I couldn't cope. My wife ditched them all too.

While I steadfastly refuse to talk politics I don’t see anything wrong with recommending a book that does:

“Spin Sisters: How the Women of the Media Sell Unhappiness and Liberalism to the Women of America.” By Myrna Blyth.

This book is a real eye opener and opinion changer. My wife and I are both Dems and I would have to say Liberals, and we both found the book very compelling. Ms. Blyth is a Conservative herself but the book is more of a good old-fashioned news article than a soap box. I recommend it to people no matter where they are on the political spectrum as it explains how mags like “Parenting” aren’t gender neutral.

Never Give Up

I think people will "give it up" when the wider question of, "why is everything autism," is finaly asked. My wife has a touch of OCD but she is now on the autism spectrum. Wha...?

Raise your kids in fear

I have a theory that most Mommy Mags basically prey on the insecurities of new mommies. Every normal mother (and father) wants to do what's best for their kids, so all these mags have diets and programs that are excellent for your kids.... until next month when the new issue tells you what a lousy mommy you were for listening to last month's advice.

Yes, it's a wonder any of us survived our own childhoods without all these studies and programs. Whatever happened to silly things like "common sense" and that overrated mantra "mother's intuition?"

Now.... why am I going on about new moms on this dad-site?

1) I used to read some of these mommy mags since I could never find a daddy mag. No more. I read a few books by Rosemond and the "Love and Logic" guys and started trusting my own instincts about raising my kids. So far, they haven't ended up in jail or grown a third ear from those "dangerous" medicines. Whew!

2) At this point, I think we SAHDs are damned lucky that there is not a magazine for us, since it would probably be the same guilt-laden information with one extra article about "finding your wife's fifteen G-spots" thrown in for good measure.

If I can add one more little tidbit (and then I'll get off my soapbox) I do have subscriptions to Better Homes and to Family Circle. They have some good information, and they're a break from my routine. And I go into them realizing what New No.2 said about "Parent", and that "Family" means "A world where Mom and only Mom is the center of it all."

Typically, the only articles about guys in these mags start out with "The problem with..." or "How to make him get off his lazy keester". So, I guess I just ignore the bad, glean the good, and spend the rest of my days figuring out how an incompetent man like me can raise kids without emotionally scarring them for lack of breasts. (mine, not theirs).

... Am I sounding cyncial? Could we start a club, ticktock?

(Incidentally, "Mother's intuition" is, in my mind, an instinct that at-home parents develop when they deal with their kids on a constant basis. I think "Father's intuition" is just as valid in our cases.)

And then claim it as their own find...Is cynicism something I can catch from you guys? Darn you TICKTOCK......

I guess father's intuition

I guess father's intuition should be known as "winging it" since that is all I do and my kid seems to be better off than most of his friends in the moms group.

Back to the article.

I admit, I went out and purchased a copy of this months Mothering magazine. I had to see what was written about the convention. You should see the schmuck that they gave the credit for writing the article!
