I met a couple of dads at the park this morning and one of them suggested I visit this website for help. Here goes…

I am a graduate student at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, CA currently working on my master’s thesis. The working title is: Fathers feeding toddlers: An investigation of how dads feed their children. The overwhelming majority of existing research regarding how “parents” feed their children is based on responses from mothers. My goal is to begin to fill the void by describing how fathers feed their little ones. For clarification, the “how” I am interested in is not the “what” children are being fed but rather the context and dynamics of meal times and snacks. Also, “feeding”, as used here, relates to the overall process of kids eating, not actually putting food into a child’s mouth.

My interest in this topic comes about based on my experience as: a registered dietitian who has worked with hundreds of families with young children, a mother of a toddler, and the daughter of a father who stayed home to raise me.

I am looking for dads willing to participate in an interview (30 to 45 minutes) about their child-feeding practices. I also need to observe some father-child dyads during three mealtimes.
Inclusion criteria:
Fathers who:
1- have spent 6 months or more at home with their child(ren)
2- work less than 20 hours per week outside the home
3- define themselves as the primary caregiver of a child 18 to 36 months of age

It is preferable for interviews to be conducted in person, with the time and location at the convenience of the dad. I am able to travel from San Diego to Santa Barbara. However, telephone interviews are possible. Participants’ (and their childrens’) identities and responses will be kept confidential. This project has met the requirements for Pacific Oaks College’s “Protection of Human Participants” policy.

A written summary of the results will be provided to all participants and if there is enough interest I would be willing to entertain the idea of presenting my findings at the at-home-dad convention in November.

In appreciation for participation, you will be entered into a drawing for a book on child feeding. Also, the hope is that this study will contribute to a better understanding of feeding practices used by fathers that could possibly influence nutrition education and policy.

If you think you might be willing to participate or have questions about my study please contact me at 323-276-9755 or bkokorowski@yahoo.com
Also, feel free to pass my contact information along to other dads who might be interested.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Question...

Is this only for participants in S. Cali, or can you phone interview with some AHD's anywhere and skip the observations?

Answer...

Phone interviews or videoconferencing (for those that have it available) can be done with dads anywhere. I don't need to observe all dads. Thanks for the question. I hope this clarifies for you. Send me a email or give me a call if you are interested and available in participating.

We're in...

Both daughters would qualify if it can be done before March 20th, the day my oldest turns 3.

Be talking to you,

Joe

Happy Trolling.

Food courts at the mall, any Chick-fil-a, and the local children's museum are good places to troll for dads feeding their kids. Then, just walk up and start a conversation. Nobody talks to us anyway, so they will likely be friendly to you, even if it looks like they are already grumpy.

Great!

Joe-
Thanks so much for agreeing to share. As you are the person of interest for the interview, as long as at least one of your children falls within the age range all systems are go. I'm working on finishing up my pilot study, hopefully within the next week or so and then I will be ready to interview you. I need to send the consent form to you (via email or snail mail) and get a signed copy back before we can get started. So...go ahead and contact me via phone or email and I'll get the form off to you and you can ask any other questions you may have. Thanks again!

I'm in

Bobbie,

I'm one of the guys you met at the park. I'm willing to participate with your study. I'll also email you with the leaders of the Orange County group. The past few days have been crazy with sick kids, a preschool auction and loads of laundry.

Thanks,
Jim

Another great!

Jim,
It was good to meet you earlier this week. I look forward to your email. Understanding the sick kids bit - my daughter caught something resulting in 102+ fevers and coughing = less and less sleep for everyone. Actually, I gotta go because here she comes, an hour after being put down for the night.

Thanks again for agreeing to participate. Also, any leads on more dads is always appreciated.

Bobbie

Still looking for participants?

If so, we are in the San Francisco Bay Area, and will have to interview via phone. The only exclusion criteria I foresee is that my son is only 13 months.

Mike, Thanks for your

Mike,

Thanks for your interest. I have concluded data collection and actually am on track to have the thesis finished by next month. Also, your son's age would exclude your from participating anyway. Thanks again!
