I'm creeped out by the Doodlebops just as much as the next guy, but these tickets just about bumped me up to best Daddy in the world in my daughter's eyes. It's sad, really, but cute too.

I was the last winner on the third day of twelve winners. Just barely sunk a three at the buzzer, so to speak. And the best part-- I get four tix, so maybe Randy and his kid will go to.

To win the tix, I had to post on a local Mom's forum when they posted the contest thread between a two hour window. I sat there and refreshed the page over and over and over until I could post. The crazy things Dads do to satisfy our kids' enthusiasm for strangely colored puppet-people who sing and dance! Am I right?

Mine dressed as a doodlebop

Mine dressed as a doodlebop for her second year Halloween. Keep them away from the Disney channel, and you'll be fine. The show is like toddler junk food.

But they don't annoy me nearly as much as The Wiggles, whom I consider to be poor actors and a weak example of children's programming. Those guys don't even try. "Um...let's see...throw in a dinoasaur and a pirate. Great. Now the kids will love us."

My Problem

The problem I have with the Doodlebops is that their idea of coming down to a child's level or becoming more "kid-like" is to be more "flaming." Do not get me wrong: I think gay men can, and do, contribute to society in many great ways like any other talented person. And, I have had gay friends and colleagues. But, these guys, as kid show performers, give me the creeps.

Send your wife to suffer through this show and take a well-deserved night off.

Flammable!

Yeah, they are a lot bit flaming. There is no denying it. You say that they might be doing it to be more kidlike, but I think the likely scenario is that the guy actors are gay and they can't help it. The fact that they are acting down to the kids (high voices and big gestures) makes it even more noticeable to us adults.

Is it possible to say that flaming gays are annoying without being a bigot? Because I like to think of myself as being open minded and understanding about homosexuals, but I'm annoyed by the subgenre of gays that are loud and proud and flaming. I completely understand anyone who wants to bash on that opinion because it is one of those inappropriate sweeping statements. But, I can't help what annoys me.

Don't Hate on Me

But I hate the way olives taste.

Is it possible to say that I hate olives without being a bigot? I can't help it. When I bite into them I just taste non-food and I gag. I keep going back to them, thinking that maybe I can intellecutallize myself into appreciating them entirely and completely as they are, on their own. But I can't do it. I hate the way they taste.

I don't hate olive oil; in fact I appreciate a good olive oil for dipping, cooking, and dressings. But this one particular aspect of olives, their taste when I bite into them, just pisses me off.

I don't want the world to be without olives. I don't even wish that there were no olives mixed into my salads. I just won't eat them. I've adjusted my own life so that I can avoid tasting olives without also insisting that every olive be destroyed.

I hope it doesn't make me an olive bigot. I don't think it does. I think it's possible for someone to have an uncontrollable emotional or sensatational reaction to an aspect of something they experience without them also being irrational and bigoted about it.

I'm glad that other people love olives as much as they do.

gay people are cool

When we were dating, my wife had a pen pal from New Zealand who came to visit. While he was here, My wife made me to hang out with them as she gave him all her attention. He was nice, good looking and had a cool accent. I didn't like him very much.

A few years after his visit, my wife received an email from him saying that he had been dating someone special and had just moved in with *him*. So now I think he is cool but only because he is gay.

lesbians are cool too.

Hey, BPD.

I bet you go for olives when you've had too many martinis.

And that, my friend...

...is the reason I don't drink martinis. I don't want to wake up in the morning and remember that I ate olives the night before.

It works all ways

Doodlebops, flamers and olives. We don't have to like everything in the world. We only have to accept that they have inalienable rights to exist.... or something like that. .... except Doodlebops, of course.

But, wait!

I just thought of something: I really like Yo Gabba Gabba. And, who could say that DJ Lance Rock isn't flaming? I like DJ Lance Rock. But, I don't like the Doodlbops guys. Now, I have really confused myself. So, maybe Doodlebops just sucks, and it has nothing to do with flaming kids' performers in general, just the two that happen to be Doodlebops.

Any thoughts BPD? Is this just a case of liking black olives, but hating green ones? When it comes to olives, should I be colorblind?

There is something about...

Martinis or Olives I don't do, just because. Deedee Doodle I would do. Do you think she has a figure under that puptent she wears?

lazytown

So is Sporticus in Lazy town flaming? Or is he just someone who might appeal to someone who is gay. I like the music on that show. That doesn't make me gay does it?

No, I think this just means that you have discovered one or two

...tokens (individual olives) of a type (olives in general) that you don't like.

This is a different kind of dislike than that of disliking one subtype of a general type, but still liking the other, as would be the case with black and green olive preferences.

Sporticus

Sporticus is not gay. He is a world class athlete from Iceland. And, quite a businessman. Lazytown was/is "his" show. I like that show a lot too. But, it makes me feel like a pervert because Stephanie is so damn cute. Not in a sexual way, just cute in general. She is a real sweetheart.

oh no

I have a six month old and am terrified of what may be in store for the future. What happened to fuzzy puppets that play drums on trash cans and monsters that love cookies or efeminate birds and elephants. I can forsee 2010 being a strange year for this SAHD.

As far as fruit / olives etc. in drinks. Never get those things put into a drink at a bar. When I was a bartender there was a guy who reached over the bar and started sucking on the fruit / olives / cherries and put them back. He thought it was pretty funny until one of the bouncers announced what he was doing. I have to believe he is not the only one who does that.

Stephanie appears to be all

Stephanie appears to be all too sweet on TV, but... I wonder what a little b**ch she is off screen. As Varuca Salt says in Willie Wonka "I want it now!" She has that spoiled look...

The Long and Little of It

We as parents can control what they are watching. If you don't like what they are watching...you don't let them watch it. Our oldest LOVED the Teletubbies. We had Teletubbie crap coming out of our ears. They absolutely drove my wife and I nuts! Guess what? The younger 2 don't watch Teletubbies (okay, I know, selfish on our part, but the REALLY drove us crazy). All 3 of our kids know that we, mom and dad, have the last word on what they can and can't watch. They don't always like it, but they know that is how it is. There are always good kids shows out there. Yes, good kids programing is somewhat subjective. My youngest loves Thomas and the Wiggles (okay, I admit it, I don't mind the Wiggles...they are less irritating in my opinion than the Teletubbies). He also likes Barney (BLECH!) and Blues Clues (I don't know why, but I like Steve better than Joe...not that I don't like Joe, I just like Steve better). So, there are my ramblings. Now, I think I have to go turn off the TV. LOL!

DORA is an olive eater and so is BOOTS

Zaboomafoo rocks and so does Curious George. Death to Angelina Ballerina. Long live Piggly Winks.
I do believe that the Doodle bops have there place in society but not in the Chefy's house hold!!!
I also think that if Tom and Jerry sang the ABC song once in a while WE here at AtHomeDad.org would sing its praises louder than the front speaker at a Green Day concert.

Zaboomafoo and George

Yes, Chef, Zaboomafoo rocks. And I wish the PBS channel here still carried it, but the PBS channel in my town really bites. If it's not an antique or a cook who can't speak English, they don't get on the that channel.

Meanwhile, have you ever noticed the Curious George gets into a situation, completely disobeys what the dude in the yellow hat says, causes problems that somehow turn out to save the day, and then George is the hero for being disobedient? Every time. "Don't touch that Uzi that I left on the kitchen table while I'm gone to the store, and I let you run free, even though you're a monkey and can't understand what I'm saying anyway.... Oh wait, you picked up the Uzi and accidentally killed the robbers! You must be a hero!"

hot potatoe, squishey banana, wiggley noodle?

nuthin for nuthin but the wiggles were so last year.. I respect You MHD but ickidy yuckedy splat splat. Now if your kids are a little older and that is what was in at the time.. They did rock.
But for now I can still say Sesame street may be the oldest but IMHO it is timeless and ageless. long live snuffy and big bird.
I only base this on what I can tolerate and not on what my 2.6 can. Please keep that in mind..
