My Music and the Ears of My Babies...

The "Silly Songs" thread got me thinking about the music we listen to in our household. Here's my take on the subject.

Four years ago while expecting our first, I decided to introduce our child to music via a set of headphones on my wife's belly. I shuffled through my vast, alphabetized collection of cd’s, (~700), looking for anything that might work as ‘kids’ music. Finally, down in section ‘r’, I came across the Red Hot Chili Peppers “Mothers Milk”, and then way down at the end, in‘w’, a couple of selections from Ween. (I thought, could this be it? is this the only music I have for little dude? or am I just freaking out about this upcoming breast feeding thing?) As it turns out, I had quite a bit more to offer. These are some my selections that I have come to rely on over the years:

* Fun, Get up and Dance Music: the Skatalites, Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers, Greatest Hits of Jan and Dean, Herp Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Prez Prado, B-52’s (some songs), Violent Femmes (now banned due to explicit lyrics), Billy Bragg and Wilco “Mermaid Avenue”, They Might be Giants (some songs), Let’s Go Bowling…

* Snowbound: Marty Robbins, Jr. Brown, Foghorn Stringband, Los Straitjackets, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Devil in a Woodpile, Taj Mahal, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, Hank Williams, Tex Ritter…

* Sleepytime: Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Sade, Beck “Seachange”…

* Beatles: Please Please Me, Beatles for Sale, Rubber Soul…

* Easy on Baby Ears: Belle and Sebastian, Andrew Bird, the Shins, Elliot Smith, the Smiths, Jeff Buckley, Calexico, Iron and Wine, R.E.M., Stereolab, Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, Wilco, Son Volt, Fruit Bats…

* And When I Just Can’t Help Myself: Johnny Cash, (they get it all the time), a whole mess of the old Blues, (heavy on harmonica, from the 50’s and before), Bluegrass music, (the classics), and a variety of World music, (mostly African and Caribbean) …

What's some of the music, from YOUR collection, that has worked in your home?

Note: The majority of music played specifically for my babies comes from their own expanding collection of children’s music. I would guess that at least ~75 percent of my collection is deemed inappropriate for their ears.

The only rule I follow is Greg Behrendt's

"Babies hate Black Sabbath. It makes them cry."

I haven't tried it out, but I'm tempted anyway.

My daughter loves the Jeopardy theme song. But mostly I just play whatever is on my iPod. Right now that means early 90's rock and high school dance music.

Similar to Alby1...

...I play stuff that I like that seems appropriate.

Before my son was born nearly 6 years ago I made two CDs, one "fun" one and one "lullabye" one. The fun one had stuff ranging from Velvet Underground and Syd Barrett to the White Stripes and Wanda Jackson, while the lullabye one featured Lightnin' Hopkins, Giant Sand, Charlie Chesterman and Looper, among others.

Now that my son knows how to operate my iPod in its JVC dock, we listen to stuff in the kitchen and dance together, but I have to be make sure I control what we listen to, so songs and song titles with swears in them don't pop up. My son's a big fan of Chin Up Chin Up (indie rock out of Chicago, I believe) and Yello (Swiss techno band made somewhat famous by "Oh Yeah" in "Ferris Bueller").

Oh Yeah

I can't count how many times I've had to pull that up on YouTube.for my son.

Sea and Cake

When my daughter was first born I'd rock her to the Sea and Cake, another fine Chicago band.

A lot of variety seems to work well

Great list Alby1, my kids have listened to many of the same artists. Aside from a large selection of children's music, they've also been exposed to a nice variety of music overall that's mostly either catchy, upbeat or simi-mellow. Anything from Ambient, Classical, early and modern Jazz & Blues, Boogie-woogie, Early to Classic Rock, Country, Country Rock, Indie, R&B, Surf to Zydeco etc. I try to keep it simple and look at reactions for what they like. They really liked banging on my keyboard and exploring all the banks of different sounds. I eventually decided to buy them a $50 one used, don't want mine getting ruined.
If you don't already have one for them I would suggest it to anyone, even the cheapy one's start at around $15 although they probably won't last long with tots or kids.
