For the Sake of the Widow's Son

You bet! 5 years at Pioneer - Mount Moria Lodge #20 First Manhattan district.

We had a joint meeting with St. Johns Loge #2 and used The Washington Bible for the meeting. It was a real honor to be in the presance of that Bible.

Fraternaly,
Jonathan

Awesome!! well hello brothers

Going on my third year myself at MacArthur 427 in Goose Creek SC sitting as JW this year and prolly in the east next year. I'm doing my first EA degree in the east in two weeks. Wish me luck with that. :)

and New I would be quite honored also. That is a very amazing thing. We currently have the "traveling bible" for the state of SC right now in our lodge. Don't know if you guys do it up there, but it's a bible thats been going around the state for several decades that when a group of 5 or members show up to visit the lodge in possesion of it they are allowed to take it back to their lodge. It's the first year we've ever had it and have been able to hold onto it or atleast go and get it back this whole year so far. So it's nice to say we have it.

We have a traveling gavel

We have a traveling gavel that moves around here. My lodge, Round Rock TX 227 had it for a couple of years in a row, but I don't think it is there now.

I started filling out the petition about 10 years ago, but I never got it finished and turned in. This time I finally got all the info in. My Dad sat in the south for my EA. One of his best buddies from back in Jr High was in the East, since Dad isn't a member in my lodge.

Now I get a call once or twice a week from Bro Dad, checking up on my work.

Oh, cool.

Now, I get it. Never heard of "Blue" lodge. Definitely heard of the Masons. Never really understood all of the ins and outs, e.g, Shriners vs. Masons vs. Scottish Rite vs. Knights of Columbus. But, I think it's a great organization. What a fantastic history you guys have.

Feh

We Masons could mop the floor with the KoC and use the Eks as a bucket and a Rotory as a mop. (hum forced but it's late.)

The Shriners are acctualy Masons on the nighest level dispite the small cars. Your Blue Lodge is your home lodge where you were raised. That one is between me an the Brothers however. :-)

Always kept it close, and I never pestered him about it.

shriners...

shriners are just the masons who are allowed to drink at meetings :) but you have to be a mason to be a shriner

and you have to be an active catholic to be a Knights of Columbus and they don't like the masons to much, atleast here in the south.

and BPD you wouldn't be pestering him if you were just asking him about it.

My father-in-law

My FiL still has the classic white cadillac that his uncle used in parades during the early 1960s. If you look closely, you can still see where the Shriner logo was painted on the hood. He also has his uncle's original fez from the late 50s and his aunt's eastern star pin.

Guess I'm Out

From the website AtHomeDaddy posted:

Masons are "[m]en of good character who have banded together into a society concerned with morality and ethics."

Also from the same page:

"No atheist can become a Mason..."

Therefore, being an atheist, I must have poor character, be immoral and be unethical. Woohoo! Sure is mighty moral of those men of good character to be so close-minded.

Specious reasoning

Randy,

Your anaylsis of the requirements for joining the Freemasons is specious. In fact, one must possess ALL of quailities -- that is, one must be a man of good character who is concerned with morality and ethics, who also believes in God, BUT, to be possessed of one or some of these qualities does not imply that one is inherently lacking one or more of the others. Your lack of belief in God does not inherently mean that you are of poor character, immoral, or unethical. It just means you can't be a Freemason. Just as I, a white man, cannot be a member of a group for which the entry requirements are being a black woman who is also a lawyer, who is of good character and believes in God. Believing in God and being of good character will never make me a black woman lawyer (alas), but not being a black woman lawyer does not mean I am of poor character. That group is just not for me. The good news is, there is a group for everyone. May I suggest you join a group for facetious atheists? I am sure you would be welcomed warmly.

In addition, not believing in God does not make you morally superior or more open-minded or more a citizen of the world. Any code of belief that shuts doors makes the world darker. The Masons require that you believe in something larger than oneself -- an ever-living God and trhe immortality of the soul. Beyond that,it does not specify which God, or how to to believe in that God, how to worship, which hat to wear, how to shave, or which socks to put on. In fact, it is the only inter-faith organization in the entire country of Iraq.

Be Seeing You.

Randy, if you start a facetious Atheists Lodge I'll be the first one to sign up.

My grandfather was apparently a Mason; is there a legacy program?

no worries

I enjoy discussion. Especially on this subject. I have quite a few atheist friends. I don't look any other way upon them because of their beliefs, nor do they because of mine. As a matter of fact up until a couple of years ago, i was quite confused and bewildered on my own beliefs and did not know which way to believe myself.

I look forward to open discussions like this one. It's what brings unlike minded people together. though we may have a difference of opinion, and may not always agree on which one is right, we can still discuss it as respectable people. So thank you everyone who is contributing to this thread. I know religion and politics are two of the worst conversation starters to have, and I wasn't aiming at starting one of thos convos with this thread, but it went that way. And new is right. It just means you can't be a freemason. There are organizations out there though that will accept you. We as freemasons, are one of the highest sought out to be hated groups because of our size our beliefs, our "secrets" all of that. We are the largest fraternity in the world. We're apparently behind all kinds of major events in the world. But the best way we are taught to tell people is that we are not a secret society, we are a fraternity with secrets. Just like any. And we happen to have certain beliefs just like any other. it's just like i wouldn't join a group of 40 year old jewish women who are about to go through menopause's group, because thats not my belief. sad analogy i know, but it gets the point across that not every group is right for everyone. Just because i, and some other members, happen to be freemasons, does not mean we look down on you or any differently towards you or anyone else that isn't. as a matter of fact we are taught to conform to the golden rule of faith, hope, and charity towards all man kind. especially in charity towards brother men.

I know this is a long entry but i just wanted to express that we all live together no matter what group we belong to. We have this group here. Different minded men getting together for the same reason. to express our feelings, and thoughts towards one subject.

this is our fraternity. so i say thank you for being part of it, and thank you for letting me be part of it.
