How many alcoholic drinks do you consume in a regular week? That's 7 full days and nights. Be honest.

Not much drinking anymore

I love Jack and Wild Turkey 101 - no question! I typically would have 5-10 drinks a week - each time having 2 drinks minimum. As parenthood loomed and other issues began to circle my life I began to give up everything, alcohol included. It became my steak in the ground. In January I partied it up with a friend and then ran a horrible half marathon a few days later. From that point on I didn't touch alcohol and I had already given up caffeine entirely.

Only a week ago did I finally give myself credit for a success worthy of celebrating with a couple of drinks when I redeemed myself of that previous shit performance at the half marathon. Also had a friend come into town and now I'm back to not drinking at all.

I only want to permit myself to drink when life is on the up and up ... and these days that's not the case. I associate drinking with memories of friends and happenings which I no longer have after becoming a father. Sad, really.

Sort of went by the wayside....

I do still drink (maybe once or twice a month) Just a couple of Mike's or Smirnov Twisted's, with some Tequila Rose and shot or two of Vodka but somehow it just slowed down once my son was born. Before he was born, I Never said I wasn't going to drink - just sort of happened. Maybe it was the fact that I have a hard time getting up at night with him without any alcohol. (With alcohol, my wife says its impossible to get me up)

On a side, did any of you guys see the Numbers episode where charlie talked about the store that found out the most common item bought with diapers was beer? Although it might have been made up just for the show, I def think that could be the case (no pun intended)

Once or twice a month

Hard ciders mostly. The occasional mixed drink. More often than not if I drink anything it's the leftover booze from whatever dish I was making. If I'm making tequila lime chicken, then a little of the tequila gets save for the cook.

a few beers over a weekend

dbrigham's picture

Most Friday nights my in-laws come over for takeout and my f-i-l and I share a few beers. Maybe one on Saturday night, and perhaps one more on a random weeknight, but that's it.

Darn Allergy!

Uke_Skywalker's picture

I get severely sick if I drink at all (someone once asked me if Kye was dosing me with ALCONON) but it came on after college, so really I think it is a blessing in disguise. It sure has kept me out of trouble. The last time I tried, I had two beers and ended up throwing up for 3 days and had to go to the hospital, if that doesn't convince you it is time to give it up nothing will.

Wine and Beer, but not at the same time

Kirk's picture

I will occasionally have a drink at night after child goes to bed. It is usually a glass of wine with my wife or a largely hopped IPA if I am drinking solo.

**************************
My wife asked me if I had signed up for the 401k yet. I told her I hadn't. She asked me why and I told her I couldn't run that far.

The numbers vary

jimpmc's picture

some weeks nothing other weeks more than maybe I should.

Family guy, I've bought beer with diapers and felt kind of strange doing so.

beer

i work catering on the weekends and play in a band so i am surrounded by alcohol.

i could go ten plus every night for a week or just two or week depending upon my schedule.

for example, if i cater tuesday, band practice wednesday, cater thurs-sat i will have a few beers after my shift/during practice and then sunday i'll grill out and drink some there too!

90 percent is beer (the cheapo shit like High Life), 10 percent vodka and 10 percent wine.

i'm not afraid to tip the glass but always refrain when i drive because i've had too many friends get fucked legally and financially by DWIs. so unless i'm carpooling i generally toss them back after i get home.

my kids are older now (8 and 4) but three years ago or so it just wasn't an option because you almost always had to put out some sort of fire or tend to one in the middle of the night.

I think I drank a years

I think I drank a years worth of alcohol this past week being Derby week and all. Come November I will probably drink two years worth considering the convention is that month. I acctually hate alcohol but do like the taste of it.

Drinking and math do NOT mix well together! lol

On topic, I drink just a few beers per week, usually something from Mexico.

Many is the night

sfoster's picture

Many is the night that I have thought, "I'm really want to get into that six-pack I bought in November 2007." Then I read to the kids, put 'em to bed, take all sorts of "getting-old" medications (which would delightfully enhance the impact :> ). I never do get to the beer, though. Instead, I fall asleep thinking about what I'm going to make for the kids' breakfast. Hmmm. Maybe I'll buy Breakfast HotPockets someday and finish the beers before next November.

My numbers are a little off.

dayv27's picture

My numbers are a little off. It's skewed because of hockey. I usually have 2 or 3 after the game with the guys, and it depends on how many games I play in a week. And I'll have a Vodka tonic with dinner once or twice a week.

Damn, it sounds like I drink a lot. I'll have to keep better track and try and get a real number.

SPEAKING OF DRINKING, Check out the CONVENTION WINE TOUR!!!!

When you drink those coffee/liqueur drinks, which way do you go? Does the caffeine keep you up or does the booze put you down? Or is your body just completely conflicted? :-)

Depends on the Weekend

This last Friday, I drank way too much.

Usually I only have some beers on Tuesday night, which is golf night, in the summer. I am usually good for some beers on a Friday or Saturday, depending on what is going on.

Usually

matt.redsquirrel's picture

about 2 a night. Could be whiskey (Maker's Mark or JD) or beer (Yeungling or Land Shark) or wine.

Beer

LordSetta's picture

When we I have beer and can afford to have beer I can drink 2-3 beers a night. Just for fun...Not trying to get piss faced or anything.

Probably 10-15 a week!(wow I sound like an alcholic)

melbell's picture

My wife and I regularly have beer or wine with dinner, and maybe a couple while watching a movie afterward. As LordSettta said above, not trying to get wasted(as a hangover and an active child DOSEN'T mix).

Hmm. Lately

JonMcP's picture

I've noticed my intake increasing to normally four a night. Not getting wasted and still feeling fine in the AM. Still, I've seen my cholesterol start to go up. Since I would never tell my doctor that I'm drinking that much I'm thinking its a sign that I need to slow down a little.

Well I never really thought

Well I never really thought about that... On a second thought I know that I need to be careful with the alcohol habit as it's all very tricky and one can become addicted before realizing it.

No worries Gordman

First go to the old family tree and if nobody's taking a drunken pee behind it, or passed out under it, you should be all right. Heredity is half the battle I'm told by my father who was so scared of becoming addicted he never touched a drop. So, being a good Scottish lad, I made up for his lack of participation with my own over-indulgences early on, pre-kids and all. Since then, I can go weeks or even months without a drink or I can tie one on over the weekends at home.

Either way, I am always mindful of two things:

1) What message am I sending to my kids? Don't drink and drive being the primary, and don't drink to excess being the secondary. (This is a biggy for me as my birth-mom was killed by a drunk driver when I was 2.)

2) Do I really need a drink or do I just want one? If you can lay off the sauce without becoming an insufferable bastard, you're probably just an average person with no predisposition to dependency. If, when you do drink, however, you can't have just one and must get the full 3 sheets, I'd say you might want to consult a professional.

Off the top of my head, I'd say that most people who have to ask if they are drinking too much probably are not, simply because denial is almost always the drinking buddy of the "just one more" crowd.

To answer the original question, I'd have to say 1-2/week, using that number as an annual average given my sporadic usage over the course of a year.

Making it look difficult. Living the dream.

10 + But Less Than Liam

Alcohol is God's social lubricant. A line from the movie "Just Like Heaven." Good movie to rent and watch with the wife.

Off and on, one or two beers a night and occasionally three or four (short) vodka tonics, rum and coke, amaretto and soda or sherry.

Hicccup!

Once in a while I'll have a couple of glasses of wine with Tina.

Hiccup!

Two pitchers of Samuel Adams when I play poker with the guys at the tennis club every Monday night.

Hiccup!

Tina and I do a Happy Hour at local restaurants two or three times a month. Cheap date.

Hiccup!

Yes, I drink (and also smoke cigars) in front of our boys. I'm a responsible drinker. Not an alcoholic.

I'm also an at-home dad and I'm going to hell!

Wine with dinner just about

Wine with dinner just about every night. Usually beer if i'm out with buddies at the bar or at a game. And i'm lucky because my wife is very good about letting me go out on weekends and even weeknights. So i still have bingers every now and again. Of course these days the revovery period for hangovers has reached 2 full day status

new option - rarely

athomeinOmaha's picture

We need a rarely drink, but occasionally, tab. I'm not against it, just don't get to because of stomach issues.
Last month I threw caution to the wind and had a glass of wine, but had been months before that,,,no,,,maybe a year,,,,hhhmmmm I'm thinking too much. Obviously to long ago to count. ;>). Will I get my Man Card pulled if I admit it was an Arbor Mist.

Its hard not to in this house

I have to stay that at times its pretty hard not to be drinking. I love my girlfrined dearly but she is the most unappeciative woman I think I've ever met and she thrusts that onto her 11 year old diva of a daughter so I get it double time. Its alot to handle when there are four other kids in the house that do not act that way. Any advice?

Jester, there is no easy solution

If the apple didn't roll far from the tree as it sounds and your girlfriend's daughter is not your daughter, you're kinda hosed from an authority perspective. If your gf won't give you head of household status, then you are doomed for sure. If you don't get any respect from her, you're gonna get even less from her kid so you've basically got no status in the house other than roommate unless it's your place.

My advice would be to concentrate on mom but use the daughter's insubordination/lack of appreciation as your argument. That way you are not accusing her directly but can use her example as a possible source of the daughter's attitude. If you cook and clean and run the daughter here and there and nobody ever thanks you for it, you can try several things. Tell the gf you are thinking of getting a job and see what she says about that. Often times the old adage of you don't know what you've got until it's gone is true of being a sahd. She might not appreciate you until she's faced with having to find a nanny or childcare, jockey her schedule around to get the daughter to and from wherever, and or clean more than she's doing now.

If you aren't taking the lion's share of the workload at home, then you might go overboard and really clean and prepare a nice meal, etc to draw attention to your contributions. If you don't want to do the extra work, then resign yourself to being an unappreciated bf in a house full of women with major entitlement issues and decide if it's worth it.

If she's your gf and the daughter is yours, you better sack up in a hurry before she becomes a teenager and takes over the world. Try telling her AND her mother no a few times (without explanation, just no and that's final) and see how it goes. Best of luck.

Never drink

I have been clean and sober since 1989.I'm note judgemental but.it worked for me but'quitting smoking is kicking my ass its been 10 days and I still want one

One Martini every other night

I find a great reward at the end of the day is my extra-dry vodka martini.  I don't drink one every night but maybe as much as every other night.  I always wait until after my two girls are asleep and then I enjoy.  I never go back for a second one and the only other time I drink is when I am with the guys for a once a month poker game...which typically runs six hours and six (or more) beers.

Like "michael45" I quit smoking in 1997 and I still want one too.  Every now and then I will bum one at a poker game but I always regret it the next day.

I don't think I could ever give up coffee though!

WOW, I don't feel as bad now....

My wife is gracious to share a few with me during the week. Otherwise, the binging comes while at/watching sporting events.
