Hi guys

I have been thinking about getting a photo ID for my 2y6m old son. He already have his passport, but I want something more the size and portability of a State ID Card.

What do you guys think about state id cards for kids?

MI / NJ

In MI, you can get a state issued photo ID - it's a drivers license from the SOS that's not valid for driving. We never did this unfortunately. When we moved to NJ and I had to get a new DL, I asked and they said "that's stupid, no" I don't know if NJ offers a state ID for minors. I think it's a great idea.

Police Station Tour

A couple of years ago the KCdads did a tour of a police/fire station, and at the end of the tour the officer said "I have a prize for the first one to produce a CURRENT picture of your children", well I didn't get the foam football that day, but the importance of having a picture that is is up to date, was impressed upon me that day. /cue after school special music/

Not a bad idea

When I took my youngest boy to Disney, I made the mistake of reading the fine print on the airline ticket. It said "MUST HAVE PHOTO ID OR YOU WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT AND YOUR KID SOLD TO A MARTHA STEWART CLOTHIER IN BANGLADESH!"

I called and was told to have some sort of photo ident for this youngster. Didn't have it. Brought his Social Security Card. I fretted about it for quite a while. Never needed it, though, since I kept my mouth shut and my son literally charmed his way through every security problem (that innocent 4-year-old excitement about Disneyworld is better than a MasterCard, sometimes).

Nevertheless, if I would've had one of those photo ID's, it would've eliminated a lot of my angst.

vacations / sitters

Twice we've left the boys with sitters overnight. Once for a weekend, once for 5-days while we jetted off to the Bahamas. Both times, we printed recent clear photos of the boys and made the sitters put them in their wallets.

*IF* something happened, wandered off, abducted, etc. The photo would be invaluable. I must admit, I don't carry photos of my kids with me in my wallet, but I do have them on my iPod which is in the glove box of my car (hard wired into the sound system) and I could get them from my Flickr or Blog quickly enough, but...

Cheers,
PittCaleb
