I really liked this movie. It's not only my favorite Bond film, but it's also just one of my favorites.
The Bond producers practically re-invent the character in this story set early in 007's career. Daniel Craig is a lumbering ape of a man, all muscle and only a hint of charm. This is the kind of Bond that crashes through walls, snaps the neck of his opponent, and doesn't give a damn about how his martini is served.
The opening chase scene features Sebastian Foucan, who is the founder of Parkour, a new extreme type of running that focuses on fluidity in movement and efficiency over urban and natural obstacles. The stunts are all real, and they are fantastic. I'm a huge parkour fan, so maybe that's why I like this movie so much.
The majority of the movie is cerebral. The thrust of the plot occurs at a high-stakes poker table, which has it's own kind of suspense. Some of the best dialogue occurs between Bond and the female agent sent to help him on the mission. They have a brief analysis of each other that reveals more about Bond's character than any previous film.
A big theme of the movie seems to be emasculation. Bond doesn't just kill his enemies- he takes their cars, their women, and their money too. And by the end, the bad guys get some of their own emasculating cringe-worthy revenge in the best torture scene ever.
Occasionally this movie randomly disappoints with an awkward line of dialogue...or when Bond is licking the blood of his enemy off the finger of his horrified soaking wet female partner, but overall I loved it.
I'm interested to see if others liked it too, and if anybody didn't like it.
