Relatively new dad looking to connect

Hi all,

I'm the father of an almost 4 month old, and just found this site.

I am continuously surprised by the number of activities for new moms that exclude new dads here in the Lexington, MA area. I came to this site originally to see if there were local dads groups (haven't found one yet), but figure I'll look around a bit and see what I can find while I'm here.

Why does it seem that there are moms groups (many), dads groups (a few) but virtually no parent groups open to either parent of a newborn?

welcome

Welcome to the site, and yeah, it's frustrating. Especially if your local "parents'" group is only for moms. I know there are some dads up in the New England area, but I'm not sure where. Check the dads lists here and on Rebeldad.com.

Boston-Area dads!

Welcome to the site! I'm the admin for the Boston-Area Dads on this site, which at this point consist of, well, me. There are a few other dads in the Greater Boston area who have checked out this site, but none have stuck around. I live in Newton and have a nearly 11-month-old girl and a boy who'll be 6 tomorrow. We should definitely get together.

Hi Samuel

Welcome to the site. It's good to see more Boston-area guys joining up. As I mentioned to SimonsDad, I live in Newton and am looking to put together a dad's group. Contact me directly if you want to discuss this. Hope all is going well in advance of the birth.

Welcome fellow Massachusetts Dad!

Its about time that more SAHD here came out of the closet! I'm from West Springfield, MA (Just west of Springfield, duh!) so I'm not in your area, but its still nice to have more dads from the same state! I know there are a many more SAHDs around - I see them in the local Barnes and Noble or Borders mostly. The dads with the child/children that don't seem overwhelmed or exasperated - their stroller is well supplied with all that's needed for a day out at the mall (And, might I add, they know how to use all the stuff they have packed.) Anywhositwhatchamacallit... welcome aboard!

I've been outed; I wasn't even in!

(Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

This is Great!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome.

In full disclosure, I'm not expecting to be full-time at-home after the first two months, but I am looking to share equally with my wife. Until I came across this site, I didn't find much out there that contemplated shared parenting - at most, they acknowledge that fathers can "help," implying that men are by definition in a Number 2 role, rather than an equal Number 1, which is my hope.

I'd be delighted to meet at a playground in Newton (or Brookline) next weekend. Tried to contact Dave Brigham through this site, but I must have been doing something wrong, because I got a server error.

Thanks again for the welcome. I look forward to meeting.

Samuel

just keep looking

If you can't find any dad's groups, just keep kicking tires and you'll find a mom's or a "parent's" group that will be happy to let a dad in.

Either way, make sure you leave the house and do things, don't be a hermit just because you don't have an active social group. That's not good for anyone.
