Can anybody share experience with a baby nurse? What made them helpful or not, how much did you line up in advance of birth, and how weird is it to have a stranger spending the night in your house? Thanks.

It is a very odd experience indeed to have a stranger spend the night in your house but eventually you will get to know your kid.
It's a bit different but we had overnight nurses many times when my father was ill. An experienced and professional nurse will focus on the job and will help you feel at ease. Try and get a personal recommendation so you don't get some kind of crazy person.
I wonder why you are considering a baby nurse?
Yes it is daunting taking care of the baby (babies?) at first but the nurses in hospital will show you everything you need to know and you will learn (and bond) quickly.
Unless there are special circumstances I wouldn't bother with the nurse.

Well, in Holland they are very common. Usually they show the new parents almost everything about new born and new mothers.
They visit the baby several times, and teach the parents how to bath the baby, how to feed them, what kind of exercises are good for the new mom, etc, and a lot more in that way.
Here in US is quite different, but maybe they are a good source of help during the first week or so.
