Article about a dad of 3 at a Playland in NE-WI area. I am glad we make a spectacle of ourselves to amuse the moms and grammas trying to do our jobs!

Patti Rasmussen column: Playland show stars McDad and children
By Patti Rasmussen • June 11, 2008

I was sitting at an outdoor table at a McDonald’s Playland Saturday morning, sipping coffee while my grandson, Evan, 3, played.

It was a perfect morning, I thought, until a dad with three little kids came stumbling into Playland and made it even better.

I was impressed that Dad was still upright, considering how he held a baby in one arm and a tray of Happy Meals in the other while he dragged the toddler who was gripping his leg toward the nearest table on which his preschooler was doing a Tarzan imitation.

For a fleeting moment, I thought about helping Poor Dad. I’m sure I would have helped a poor mom, but a dad struggling to juggle kids and junk food while pretending to be having quality time with his offspring is great entertainment as long as nobody gets hurt. (Shame on me.)

I wasn’t the only spectator. Playland was filled with moms. We all watched Dad drip ketchup down his shirt and chase a wadded, wet napkin under the table — nearly toppling it. He bounced the baby on his knee and helped the toddler stand on his chair so he could reach (gulp!) the salt shaker. Then Dad commanded Tarzan, who was long gone up the Playland maze, to come and eat, like THAT was going to happen.
I think dad got a bite of his big burger with stuff running out and down his pants before the pink Hi-C drink was knocked over, but I’m not sure because I was trying not to stare. (Not really.)
One young mom couldn’t stand the pathetic drama and caved.
“Do you need more napkins?” she shouted across The Land.
Dad didn’t respond, which was probably because Tarzan had returned; mad. Apparently he’d wanted a burger instead of nuggets.

McDonalds should schedule this sort of entertainment every Saturday morning. For the hoards of unappreciated moms, McDad in Playland is hard to beat.

Sad

You'd never see a story about a mother that did the same thing because that would be insulting to women. Whereas it's OK to insult dads.

Fraking double standard.

She apologized for being insensitive

I gave her a call. I gave her my take on her rude and insensitive article. She seemed sincere in her apology for being that way. She said most of her articles are tongue in cheek. The rudeness and double standard of this article did not really cross her mind she says. Promises were made to to better in the future.

Gotta go, the stool has poked my son.

call her, it will make you feel better

Give her a call. Her number is 920-431-8221. People in the press that print this stuff need to be reminded about those of us that are brave enough to break the mold.

Calling her made me feel so good, I am going to spend the next 3 days in Park City UT drinking beer WITHOUT the kids. YEAH!!! mini vacation!!!

I read it for what it is

It's not about the dad, really. It's about moms who usually feel like they look this way to other people. Moms feel overwhelmed a lot, so to see a dad struggling in an exaggerated way makes them feel like they aren't doing too bad a job.

And you would certainly see a piece like this about moms; they're all over the blogosphere. Most of the time it's the mom herself telling the story, poking fun at herself.

And come on. The ketchup on the shirt is funny. Because I always seem to have ketchup on my shirt...

it's always nice

It's always nice to see that other parents struggle with their kids as much as you do with your own. As BPD said, makes you feel like you're not doing a half-bad job when your kid is being quiet and nice in the grocery store while some mom's got a tantrum-throwing maniac on her hands.

Still, the tongue-in-cheek tone of this article that the author claims doesn't come across to someone who's never read her before. The article comes across as arrogant and ignorant.

And speaking of ignorant, I'm putting on my editor's hat now: shouldn't a regional editor for Gannett Wisconsin Media know that a large group of "unappreciated moms" is a "horde," not a "hoard"?

Yeah, yeah, nitpicking....

It's insulting!

PRETENDING!!! No woman would ever be so callous as to accuse another of pretending to have quality time with their children.

There is nothing in that quote, or the rest of the tripe, to suggest that this is a gender neutral phenomenon.

And so fraking close to Father's Day no less.

Patti Sucks

She was watching her grandson. I bet Evan's Mom was "pretending" to have quality time with her yoga class or something.

Call her out

I don't mean to be like certain lobbyists every time minute (that's my-noot, not min-uht) issues arise on guns or women's rights or labor. But she really is condescending to us "poor dads." Should we inundate her?

And considering that Father's Day is right around the corner, I wonder if this is her "tribute." So, yes, Bob, I would diplomatically call her out on her arrogant attitude, if you feel so inclined.
