Hi there;

I'm wondering if you guys can help me with the next situation:

We have two cars at home, a Toyota Corolla with the carseat for my 2y7m old son, and the other one (a compact) used mainly for my wife, who is 7 months pregnant. When we need to go someplace as family, it s easy, we just use the corolla, but now my mom (she doesn't drive) is visiting us and she will help us when my daughter is born.

So we are planing to buy a car with enough space for the 3 adults, a toddler and a brand new baby.

Any ideas? A van or a SUV?.

Thanks

First of all I would see if

First of all I would see if you can get by with the cars you have - we have a Passat and an adult can sit between the 2 car seats in the rear - so long as the adult isn't too large.
Secondly I would consider a compact minivan like the Mazda 5 before I went ahead and got a full size van like the Odyssey or Siena. I wouldn't bother even considering an SUV unless you really need it.
I have seen a Mom in my neighborhood driving around with 3 kids across the back seat of her wagon - I'd be curious to see how she manages it - maybe there are narrower car seats available if you shop around?

Try your carseats/boosters first

We have a Saturn Relay minivan. I love the functionality and the power sliding side doors (great loading/unloading kids when your arms are full) although I'd go with a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna if I could chose again.

Whatever you buy, make sure that you take all of your carseats/boosters and try them in the vehicle before you sign on the line. I've seen many vehicles where the seats don't fit well or the childseat anchors are difficult to access.

Minivan

We just went through this process. We have a 3 yo and a 16 month old. We had a Toyota Highlander and a Honda Pilot, both SUVs. We hated the fact, that if we had an additional passenger besides our kids and us, it was next to impossible. The Pilot has a 3rd row seat, but you can't even use it because the two car seats don't allow you to get back there. We REALLY fought the idea of getting a minivan. In the end we got a Toyota Sienna and we LOVE IT!(also considered the Odyssey). The back seats where the kids carseats are located are captains chairs, so you can easily walk between them to get to the back row of seat. Also, the room for storage is insane, especially when you fold the back row of seats down (you can even fold 1/3 or 2/3 of the back seat for more storage, but still allow room for Mom to sit).

Another plus we found to the minivan is the automatic opening doors. Comes in handy when it is raining/snowing. Hit the button on your key, and the door opens for our 3 y/o to just climb in out of the elements, while we strap the youngest in. You can also get the auto opening back hatch, which is very nice too.

We looked at cars too, but in the end the minivan was the best fit for us. You can get large SUV (Suburban) that allow the extra seating, but you lose out on the auto opening doors, not to mention the increase in gas cost.

SUV

We have a gmc envoy, and I like it but with 2 car seats the back seats are full, no way an adult could fit in there. I have a chevrolet tahoe and an adult can fit in the back row with the carseats, but that's a full size SUV and sucks down the gas. I'm fighting the minivan idea, but mainly because I couldn't find one that was either 4wd or a selectable AWD. We're in michigan and it can get snowy out fast, so I want my wife to have a 4wd or awd vehicle to drive to work and back. She works out in the country and the roads get drifted over fast and she's needed the 4wd several times. I'd go with the minivan because even if you get an suv with a third row, you can't get back there, somehow with a minivan and captains chairs, the 3rd row becomes usable, but not with an suv. I wish they made an awd minivan, I'd be all over that.

We just got the Toyota Sienna with AWD. It is the only one as far as I know.

Grand Cherokee Wagoneer

8 cylinder, 1987, even had the fake wood siding. It could pull a trailer with 8 hunting dogs and never break a sweat. Greatest SUV in the world, but it got about 20 gallons to the mile. Sold it before the gas crisis and bought a minivan. Much better in terms of kids and gas. I truly miss my Wagoneer, though.

But, with gas prices the way they are right now, I agree with JohnGilroy that I would see if I could get by with what I have. As a matter of fact, that's what we're doing. We have three cars -- our '99 minivan, an '87 Camry, and a '93 Ranger (we keep the Ranger as a fallback vehicle for when the others are in for repairs, etc.) The Camry doesn't have a front airbag, so our oldest can sit in front, if the occasion arises.

They're not shiny and pretty, but we get around town with no problems. And I really am not looking forward to starting car payments again.

So, if you must, look at minivans. Also I saw that VW has some new station wagon-ish thing out. And the Passat is a good one too.

Good hunting. :-) Tell us what you've decided, since we are all going to be in that same boat, eventually.

Please tell me that I am not destined to get a minivan!

I am just not a minivan kind of guy. Granted, I feel a bit claustrophobic in the back seat of our 4-Runner with the carset locked in the middle. Our other car has an even smaller back seat. We have talked about upgrading to something bigger; options include the Toyota Highlander (hybrid option), but Mr. Dad just made an interesting point. We like the idea of the extra seats, but are they that difficult to get to with a carseat (or two!) in the way? I am trying to imagine Mike's folks getting into the third-row seats...hmmm.

Subaru Outback?

Would a large wagon like the Subaru Outback be big enough?

Well Mike, if your going to add another to your family, you might just have to bite the bullet and get the minivan!! I have two kids, and I'm still fighting the minivan idea and sticking with the SUV's, but it sure is hard to get them in the back seat, especially if its raining verses the power slider door, climbing in and strapping them in the seat. Now, my oldest is 6 and she can open the door by herself, but I have to remind her if we are in a parking lot, she can't open it. I dread the idea of her opening the door, wind catching it and it slamming into someone elses car. I'm in michigan so I'm still using the "I need a 4wd" excuse. But every time I see other kids in a minivan, I think about how much easier it would be... but, but, its a minivan....ewwww...only old people drive minivans :)

My day will come, I just know it, but I'm still fighting it....so, what's it going to be?

I dread the thought of

I dread the thought of returning to the mini-van sceen, but the surburban is costing me over 100 bucks to fill up. So we only use it if we are going somewhere with all the kids and shopping. I love it, but gas is killing me. For work and driving one or two of the kids around we use the sebring. 22mpg compared to 13mpgs is a big difference for odds and ends

Dodge Grand Caravan

assuming

a) Dodge is still in business...

b) You can get past the minivan thing....why, I won't lie, Im not real sympathetic towards....we're SAHDs and we're worried about how people will judge our cars? I mean mean, come on, I have a three year old who at least once a day says "Daddy, wipe my butt" (in a nice tone, actually)...

Anyway there are several reasons (One reason is only on newer models):

1) Automatic side and trunk doors

2) Room to move about. My wife even today got into the back seat to adjust Andrew's chair.

3) Stow-n-go seating. No need to remove seats you're not using they go into the base of the vehicle

4) They added a table into the new models that the four back seats can swivel around and face each other...so family card games, meals, etc., in the back of the van. Obvious not for a toddler and infant, but eventually.

We have the 2005 model so if you want used I would go no earlier than that for auto doors and Stow N Go.

You guys are killing me!

Will: My uncle had one of those vans. It was hot in its day!

Belly_man7: We have a 4-Runner. We put gas in today...$80. What's up with that...

Taylorjm: Dude...don't give in. Revolt. I know minivans offer space and ease-of-use, but come on now. Stick with the AWD/4WD excuse. Unfortunately, I can't use that excuse here in Calif.

How long is your mom staying???

If my count is right, your current family is 3. One more ready to come out, that makes 4. Then mom coming out to help out. Unless her stay is going to be permanant, don't buy a new car at all. It will be less expensive in the long or even medium run just to go with the two cars you have when you go places. When mom goes back home, you still have two cars that are closer to being paid off than a brand new one. Do an excel spread sheet to compare the cost of a new car with higher insurance, higher registration, higher payments, etc., verses the current costs of your existing car. Also ask, how often are all 5 of you going to be going someplace together? It would take a lot of trips to counter act the cost of a new car. Why incur 4-6 years more of debt and pay all that interest to the bank just for a little convenience during a short term situation?

Still thinking about it

Thank you guys for that useful ideas.

Just today, after looking at the ratings for different SUV and Minivans, we've discarded the idea of a new car. We need to solve the problem of going around the five of us at the same time, but there is not way to pay for a car that gives, by far, less MPG that the ones we use now. (Toyota Corolla and Subaru Wagon).

But the idea of a minivan is now rounding my head, so maybe I'll start looking for an used minivan, and its only for 3 to 4 months; specially for the delivery time, the first month, and after that, just for going out the five of us.

Hope to find a good solution before the baby is born, in the meantime, ideas are welcome.

Public Transit?

I've never loved the bus as much as since my daughter arrived, much to my surprise. It's easier than car seats, the people on board are unbelievably polite about offering seats for us and the stroller (was I that nice before??), the baby girl LOVES all the faces on the bus, walking to and from the stops is fun, and there's no parking.

'course, Omaha may not be quite as transit-friendly as Vancouver. (I was there for 24 hours recently and don't recall much by way of buses!)

Cheers,
Steve

Chevy Suburban...

When it came time for the 'big' vehicle, (baby #2), we went with the Chevy Suburban. An easy decision considering it was the family vehicle growing up in Texas. In short, I'm a suburban dude, I have many a story to share about me and my suburban(s).
Because of her size and mileage, she's impractical in many parts of the city, so she'll spend most her days sitting in our driveway, but for the kids and all their kid stuff - she's the best! We're a 'road-tripper' family, we love to get out and drive across the country. Just this past weekend I loaded her up for a camping getaway in Wisconsin.
I usually fill up with X85, or as I like to call it, Corn Fuel, (right now running about $3.50 p/gal in Skokie), but many times I can't find a station that sells. (For the record, X85 burns a little faster than gasoline, so there's little to nothing in savings, but it does kind of smell like corn chips ;-)
If our lives together go according to plan, someday our kids will be in college, and my wife and I will be in an RV - full-timers, address U.S.A.

Can't use 4 wheel drive?

I know how you guys feel

I know how you guys feel about the minivan thing. I've always been a sports car guy and the thought of a ponderous minivan makes me squirm. Sadly, the first time I tossed the stroller and diaper bag in the back of my VUE RedLine it hit me like a ton of bricks that my compact SUV just wasn't going to cut it since we are planning to have at least one more youngster and love road trips.

I've been looking at the Saturn Outlook/GMC Acadia and the upcoming Ford Flex as a compromise between the minivan and a wagon. I'll have to do some family test drives and see just how well the new full-size crossover concept really works.

At least if I do have to go the way of the box on wheels I can play with my wife's Mustang when she's on baby duty :-)

Narrow Carseats

I have a similar issue to Itux except I now need to fit 3 car seats across the back seat of a sedan.
I found a fairly narrow seat called the radian - http://sunshinekidsbaby.com/ - it appears to be the business but there seem to be some issues with a rear facing installation so it is only a partial solution.
I wonder if anyone else has managed to get 3 car seats across a back seat?

Wife has a Mazda 5 and I

Wife has a Mazda 5 and I have a Honda Ody...

We have 3 boys, 8yo, 7yo, 5mth old and we call all fit in both very well. The thing about the Mazda 5 is that it is easy to park, get ok MPG and has a lot of pickup.

We have two cars that can hold all of us just in case. This actually came into play when we needed to be somewhere and my van had a flat in the garage...

We do it with a new

We do it with a new passat.
My son is three and a half and has been in a booster seat for nine months or so I think a little early according to CT state law not but the car seat and him turns into a nightmare.
When there was two car seats we used to put them side by side and the third adult would sit by the door. It is easier with the booster seat.
We went with a car vs a SuV due to the craziness of gas.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

My wife swore off minivans along time ago, So we new we were gonna get an SUV but personally I cant stand SUV's that SUCK gas like its going out of style. So we got the Highlander Hybrid. Really nice vehicle room for 5 and looks cool and even when your mom leaves its just all around good vehicle. Its got power and enough room in the back to haul stuff. Im thrilled with it, just an Idea if your still even reading this thread

Mazda CX-9 Motortrend 2008 SUV Of The Year

We just got rid of our Toyota Sequoia as it was not a 4WD vehicle for here in the Midwest. Now my wife who has a Masters Degree In Environmental Management did a ton of research, she is a research Goddess. She determined that the Hybrid vehicles are not what they are cracked up to be and you need to own them for an extended length of time to make the investment worth it. She actually says it is like putting lipstick on a pig, not a good thing.

We actually went with a crossover vehicle and bought a Mazda CX-9. This vehicle comes fully loaded with all sorts of nice options and does have a 40/20/40 split second row bench, plus a 60/40 split back row as well that folds completely down for storage. The wife has already ridden back in the third row and says it is surprisingly comfortable. It is a nice vehicle and comes with AWD. So far so good however, gas is according the to the sticker 15 City 21 Highway. Even has a DVD player with two infrared headphones for the twins and navigation. So far so good with it and I am glad that I now have AWD versus 2WD with rear wheel drive.
