Taking the subject from another thread:

Brian Dickson, an at home dad from Kansas City, passed away this past week after a long battle with cancer. Brian was as active as he could be throughout the years with KCDADS. Check out the 2007 Convention Smokin Guns Photos.

I propose that the scholarship fund that was in the works for the convention be named in Brian's honor. I haven't heard an update lately from Hogan on how things are going with the fund. I think it would be a great reminder every convention of how at home dad-dom can change and impact lives. I never met Brian, but I know he had a great impact on the KCDADS group.

Brian Dickson Fund?

I attended Brian's funeral today and his wake last night. It is crystal clear that KCDADS and the SAHD's movement was a crucial force in Brian's life and the life of his family. His family was scattered from New York all the way to the Phillipines, and yet, everyone in his extended family knew that KCDADS had made all the difference in Brian's life as an at-home dad! His wife credited Brian being at home as enabling her to practice medicine; and, she said that KCDADS had made it possible for him to be content in that role. His parents and brother also credited KCDADS as the reason Brian had been happy as an at-home dad.

When you are made aware of the wide circle of people affected by just one dad like Brian, extending far beyond just a dad and his kids, it inspires and perhaps makes just a bit easier some other dad's decision to accept the most important job in his life! So it is with all of the SAHD groups, whether in the US or abroad; and, whether large or small. The effort of starting and supporting a SAHD organization is worth it! As an example of that impact, I think Brian would be a great model for such a memorial.

Amen, Brother Phil, I second your recommendation!

Brian Dickson Scholarship Fund

It would be fitting and proper to honor Brian's commitment to his daughter and family by naming the Scholarship fund in his memory. I cannot think of a better way to remember Brian than to offer a future to a child & family who may not be fortunate enough to further their education on their own.
By the way, Brian was a great guy who, under the circumstances, never showed fear even though he probably knew his time on this earth was short. Brian was a big Star Trek fan and the Scholarship would fullfil one of Spocks' most profound lines "Live long and prosper!"

Scholarship fund-oops

I guess I missed the point on who the fund is directed toward. I'm a little sqirrelly today(?) after witnessing Arwin, Brian's daughter, in all of the glorious innocence of a child, as she carried her favorite stuffed animal and smiled and waved to the child seated in front of us at the church today. That's when I lost it.
Providing an opportunity for a Dad to make it to the convention is the aim of the fund-duh.

No question. The annual fund should bear his name. Make it happen.

Scholarship Fund Update

The current amount in the scholarship is $50.00, which I donated last year. We have yet to receive any other donations. Information on where to send donations and criteria is on the At-Home Dad Convention website. Click on Convention Scholarship. So far only one dad has been nominated.
