Our oldest son, Grant Hilling (20, 6’ 9”) was selected as a member of the USA U-21 Beach Volleyball Team. Grant and his partner, Chase Ross (18, 6‘ 5“), will compete in the Swatch FIVB World Championship against teams from 27 other countries. The host city is Brighton, England.

The FIVB World Tour is a training ground for future Olympians. For more information log on to www.fivb.ch/EN/BeachVolleyball/index.asp. Click on 2008 Junior SWATCH FIVB World Championships, then click on MEN. The USA Roster is posted on the ENTRY LIST page.

I’ll be leaving for England with the USA Team on August 31st and return on September 8th.

Make it a great At-Home Dad day!

Proud and Excited

Thanks guys.

Proud and also excited for Grant. He has come a long way in a short time and worked very hard to improve his beach game. FYI, beach and indoor are two different games. In beach you need to be more of an all-around player. I compare it to the two different surfaces in tennis - hard court versus clay.

It's also nice to watch your grown up kid accomplish goals he has set for himself. One was to attend Pepperdine and play for Marv Dunphy (considered one of the best volleyball coaches) which he has already accomplished. Two was to play on the AVP Tour (Association of Volleyball Professionals). This year he made his AVP debut by playing in a Qualifier Tournament. He and his partner lost in the second round. He didn't make the main draw but people took notice of his talent.

The USA Team and possibility of playing in the Olympics is icing on the cake.

Our youngest son, Matt, is also excelling at beach volleyball. Last weekend at age 15 he received his CBVA Men's B rating. He is one of the youngest to do so. His partner, also named Matt, at age 13 is the youngest. Matt and Matt played against men two to three times their age. They won their pool and then lost in the second round of the playoffs.

Life is a beach!

Liam, I'll see you in Sacramento.

Hogan
