Alright, down to business. Some SAHDs have a lot of free time to themselves. What's everybody's favorite video game to kill time. I would have to go with the original Max Payne. I know... why? It's just a classic. It's not like I said Duck Hunt!!

Half-Life 2

The only videogame indulgence in the past five years. Two weeks of playing about four hours a night. Playing Wii, PS2, etc. isn't the same thing in my book. I'll take a PC-based game over a console version any time.

One exception was deathmatch mode in GoldenEye 007 (N64). Grenade launchers in the basement scenario - I kicked ass on bank shots.

too many game systems?

In our house (not counting the laptop) we've got SIX game systems... and they are all in use. We've got an X-Box (got it free for shampooing my buddy's carpets), PS2, Nintendo and Super Nintendo (they're actually combined in one system called an FC Twin, check it out at amazon.com), Gameboy Advance, and get this... an Atari (oh you know it, I got Pitfall and Keystone Capers, boys)!!!!!

Strategy

Oh the choices....I guess I'd go with Silent Hunter III (WWII u-boats) since I've been playing that one continuously for a few years. I usually go for strategy games since I can peck at it when I have time and pick up where I left off later; though on occasion I'll get into a good FPS for some stress relief.

Atari?

Are you talking like an original Atari or one of the so-caled updated new versions that I have seen before? I remember playing Atari so long ago and I thought that it was the greatest thing ever. Now you have to remember I am going to turn 30 in Oct. so I have been growing up in the age where video games were the newest rage.

I believe my favorite games would have to be EA Sports NCAA Football and Madden. I have not played Madden in a long time because I think that it is just getting moe and more complicated when they add things to the game. The NCAA versions have kept it somewhat simple and I would rather recruit than draft with salary caps and so on. It is easier to deal with academis violations than an unruly free-agent.

Solution for buttons.

If you are having trouble getting the hang of all the different button combos.......Buy a Wii..I have said it before and I will continue to say it..Wii is the best new system out there....yeah yeah so what X Box 360 and PS3 have better graphic capabilities but the Wii destroys all in the game play department which is what gaming is all about. You can have the best graphics money can buy but in the end if the game play isn't there than WGAF.....The Wii is making massive breakthroughs in the way we see gaming and it shows that people love it because you can buy X-Box and PS3 just about anywhere but you can be guaranteed that you should call ahead before going to grab a Wii at your local retailers. Nintendo 4 Life....Peace out!

Atari, free time

dadofallboys,
yup... the REAL Atari. Still works and I LOVE it!!!

mbieweng,
My 9 year old is actually more high maintanence than my 2 year old!! But they are both VERY independant which gives me a lot more free time than a lot of SAHDs. I feel fortunate sometimes, but I really miss my little guy being a little guy sometimes too. :(

Nethack anyone?

Ascended a weaponless, atheist, vegan monk.

Only after breaking my vegan conduct on the previous one by eating a damn fortune cookie.

'course.. I haven't played since the Golden Pig arrived.

Cheers,
Steve

P.S. Talk about your great gameplay and crappy graphics!

Nintendo rawks!

I have a GameCube and am currently working on Bounty Hunter - not the best Star Wars game ever, but pretty cool. I do want a Wii in the near future because oh who knows I might actually get a little bit of exercise and not just my thumbs. But the best reason to keep it Nintendo...well, three reasons I can think of: Mario! Zelda! Metroid! Can't get em anywhere else!

So why don't they call it mooching when the wife stays home?

My Choice

I still love the original Zelda for the old 8 bit Nintendo...I know the graphics aren't great, but I just like the way the game plays. On my computer, I like any of those hidden object games where you find the stuff hidden in the picture...kind of an I spy on the computer.

Love this game. Ultimate Nintendo fan service. Bummer about the online though.

Gaming is #1 at my house, but what should my boy's first game be? I wonder if he'd even like Super Mario Bros.?

The future is to those who take it - unknown

I play a lot of Mario Kart,

I play a lot of Mario Kart, especially the online which is great.

Put a lot of time into ProEvo Soccer 08 on the Wii last spring.  Best soccer video game I've played [great wii controls].  Would love to get the 09 version in a few months - but with 6 month old instead of pregnant wife, won't be much time.

Mostly it's Mario Kart as I can play a few games after dinner is done - a few online races take 15-20 minutes and make me forget the day.  IT's hard to find time to do any really involved games anymore.

I just got a 360 Elite for

I just got a 360 Elite for christmas this past year and I have been logging some pretty serious hours during naptimes and after the kids bedtime. I have been into Mortal Kombat vs DC comics for the past few weeks. That is a pretty decent game. Also been playing Fallout3 on the pc pretty regular.  Those are all nice games, but the game I am constantly going back to believe it or not is Roller Coaster tycoon 2. I do not know why that game is addictive to me. Also, I am hella envious that some of you still have the atari. I have the 360 and a fairly high end gaming pc, but both of them can NOT match the simple fun of 'Dig Dug','Donkey Kong','Duck Hunt', or the original 'Super Mario Brothers.

Change of pace and use your brain?

If you want to use the side of the brain than many of us haven't in awhile.....XBOX Live Arcade has a cool game called Braid. It's a side scrolling puzzle/adventure that uses "time" as a main part of the gameplay. It won a bunch of awards last year and it's great to pick up for a short time and bust out a level. The price is right too.

Enjoy,

Dale

Gaming?

My wife required me to quit all games.  I fought her on it for awhile, but it wasn't worth the headache after awhile.  She got pretty good at becoming a headache.  The compromise was she would have to accept my 'substandard' cleaning while she was away.

I do play stupid flash games though.  Kongregate.com is a decent site to kill a few minutes.

I did like WOW though, sold my XBOX, and want a Wii.

lvl 60 rogue, a bunch of lvl 30's.  I'll be back to WOW someday.

Oddly enough, Freecell

For mind stimulation, I'm pretty good at Freecell on the PC. My winning streak is at 86.

I also play WII Sports with my 5 year old boy. He's pretty good at golf (shoots par), bowling (about a 150 average) and tennis.

...not with the program

Uh, the extent of electronic games in house right now is a High School Musical 3 Dance Mat - but damn if I wasn't the first one to get a perfect score (on level one...)!  That blew my kids (and my wife) out of the water - I'm still getting mileage out of it!

Hey leighpierce, I must be in a parallel universe of at-home-dadhood - I do know lots of ahd's who love games/gaming and do spend a bit of time - important down time - gaming, but I don't know about the "a lot of free time".   Did I sign up at the wrong job office?  :-)

I wish I had a PS3, but I have a Wii60...

I'm a big fan of the Resident Evil series, so I'm pretty hyped about the playable RE5 demo that's coming out 1/26 on Xbox Live. Unfortunately, I'm saving up cash for a new bundle of joy we're expecting in May, so I may not actually get RE5 until sometime in the fall.

PS3

I have both a Wii and a PS3.  We got the wii and sold the XBox a couple of Christmases ago.

I got a PS3 when my oldest was old enough to play with me.  Our favorite game there by far is Little Big Planet.  If you haven't played, you're missing a ton!

If anyone here has a PS3, add me as a friend - PittCaleb - we love playing LBP and other racing games online and love playing with people we know.

Cheers,

PittCaleb

WoW

Yea, I am a WoW freak myself, before the last expansion, I have 5 lvl 70's. Only 2 lvl 80's currently. It is one of the few chances I have to 'talk' with other people during the day. I play a little during nap times but not sure how that is going to work once my wife goes back to work from her current maternity leave next week. I will still have raid nights twice a week though. On Ysera server if anyon else plays.

I think a hobby is important

I think a hobby is important or you would lose you're mind, mine is flight simulator. I am a member of Air Source and Delta virtual airlines, which allow you to fly off line and I have flights running around my schedule, and can hit the pause button if needed. I do many 10 hour flights most at night and wake up in time to land.. I fly the MD-11/ MD-80 and the 737 800 or 900 are my favorite aircraft to fly. I also play Battlefield 2142 at night.

New to PS3. . .

It's a year later, and I now have a PS3 in addition to a nearly one-year-old child. The PS3 is generally okay (had a hard time getting it online initially), but after I spent too much money for a flat screen tv, I find that the "superior" PS3 displays most games in just 720p. My Xbox does 1080p for the same games, RE5 included.

On a separate Sony note, I now see that most online-enabled PSP games have their servers shut down within a year or two of launch. That's weak, Sony. Just when a game reaches a reasonable retail price, there's no more online play.

Avid raider now Civ Fanatic

I love Wow, many lvl 80s. But I have decided to put it down for a while as I am trying to do the SAHD thing and still be a prat of running my business at night (that's right, no sleep for me).

I recently got a PS3 with the last two Ratchet and Clank games, and I have also picked up Civ IV: BtS. Both because they allow me to be available at a moments notice with no regrets.

We will see how it goes. My wife goes back to work on Monday... wish me luck!
