Ronnie can also "cut and run," when things don't go right militarily. Remember the 250 Marines blown to bits in Beirut? No? Neither to most Republicans, force in Lebanon didn't work so they were pulled out with nothing to show. Also a lifelong advocate of small gov tippled the fed gov and it took “bad boy bill” to shrink gov to the size it was under Kennedy.
But what experience did Ronnie have at the federal level? He was govnr of Cali but does that make him as qualified as the mayor of a city with 9000 people in it? Oh, and there was the planting the flowers at the cemetery where SS troops were buried, oh, and supporting el dawea and el qeada, and just about anyone who was anti-Communists, (gough Conta "Freedom Fighters:) oh, and the secret deals with our enemies in order to play BOTH sides of the Iran Iraq war, oh, and being against helmet laws because, "they restrict personal freedom," but anti- marijuana reform because pot "causes brain damage." But slamming your head into the road at 60 mph is emblematic of an American right to chose. Oh, and Social Security reform that was a laugh taking around $300 a month out of the hands of children who’s primary bread winner is disabled. Oh, and he and Old Mother Regan can get the astrologers back in the White House to help run the free world.

its just too easy baiting the hook when it comes to politics.......i know the posts are not in anger, but if my humor can be construed as anger by some, the there are quite a few that could be misinterpreted. hey we are all in this together and we have one thing in common.......we all love our kids enough to stay home with them instead of sending them to baby jail......so can't we all just get along?........another satire for those of you who might misconstrue.
I said nothing about the mans morals, but his policies - which most Republicans avoid talking about - are subject to ethical examination. Ronnie was a moral man and I was sad that a man with such wit and dignity died such a painfull and humilating death. I simply hated his polotics.
AtHomeDad by it's very nature leans left. We live is a nation great enough and wealthy enough that families can have the choice as to who is going to stay home and who is going to work. That seems odd to me and smaks of O'Riely-esque "non-issues" that are to be pummbed up untill someone makes them news. It's logical to me that most men who stay home, conservative or liberal, are progressive enough to belive that a woman can support a family and a man can stay home. I say this knowign that we ALL want one parent home for the good of our kids.
I voted for Bill twice and would again even if my wife was screwing him after the innaguration. "Good luck honney! Make sure we open talks with Iran and North Korea again."
I love Kennedy but he screwd everything in a skirt, so did FDR, so did God knows who else. How should that reflect on a man or woman's ability to govern?
If you owned a company and the CEO made mistakes that cost a lot of money and lives, continued to run up debt, and never admitted to any mistakes, would you let him or her keep their job? Would you hire someone that wants to continue with the same policies or would you take a chance on someone else?
i can somewhat agree except government is nothing like private industry....in private industry you would find the right person for the job, not let someone else tell you who is the best....i don't particularly care for any politicians, i think that most of them are crooked, immoral or both. i just hate that the democratic and republican parties tell us who the best candidates are...why not have a big right in for the entire country and no politician is allowed to run.....just being funny, that would never work, but i hope you get my intentions.
i just hate that the democratic and republican parties tell us who the best candidates are
Do you live in the same democracy that I do? Anyone in this country can be on that ticket if you meet the qualifications to run for President set forth in the Constitution. You think Mike Gravel was whom the Democratic Party was telling me was among the best that they had to offer? Heck no. I was lucky enough to have many candidates to choose from with my vote. I got informed, made my choice, and went to the polls. No Party official ever contacted me to see if I was following the elite Democratic rank-and-file. Don't like your choices? As you mentioned, you have the right to write someone in, or you could also run for President yourself. If you are letting someone else tell you who is the best candidate in a democratic election without doing your own due diligence, then you are not being an active participant of that democracy and maybe you deserve the cynicism that comes from not being involved.

well, since i actually have been elected by my constituents to our school board, i'm pretty sure i understand how democracy works....but in the real world, do you honestly think someone other than who the party bigwigs want in, can garner enough support or finance to actually be the parties candidate...If you do, i would love to come live in your world, since it sounds like a wonderful fairytale.....plus i have voted in EVERY election, local, state, federal since 1985...have you? if you have i congratulate you, if not then.............
Yes. I may be cynical but I think the mainstream media tells us who the best candidates are. It's in their financial interest to create interesting stories. During the primaries, they wanted to have a black man run against a woman. They treated it like it was the superbowl and made it seem like a horse race even after it was obviously over. If either candidate pulls ahead significantly in the general election, they'll again make sure it stays close or at least create the illusion that it is close. Call me cynical but I also don't think the Republican party chose McCain. The MSM wanted to see a Hillary Clinton, John McCain matchup because the polls showed that it would be close and they could make a lot of money off of the soap opera that it would create. I'm sure the media is making a killing off of the Sarah Palin VP pick.
I guess I'm a little older since I have voted since 1979 and was registered as a Democrat for 2 years before re-registering as a Republican. I re-registered as a Democrat last year, not because I agree with all of their policies but because I think the Republicans have hurt the middle class with their tax cuts for the rich and corporate welfare and also because I hate that they're spending my tax money and possibly my son's tax money on what I consider to be an immoral war. My vote will be based on issues and although I don't agree with Barack Obama on everything, I agree with him on the things that are most important to me including health care, taxes, the Iraq war, outsourcing, and supreme court nominations.
but in the real world, do you honestly think someone other than who the party bigwigs want in, can garner enough support or finance to actually be the parties candidate
Let's see, the Republican party bigwigs did not want John McCain to be the nominee. He was virtually written off before the Republican primaries, and he was so close to going broke that he had to accept public financing to keep his campaign going. He was lucky to make it to the first primaries. What kept McCain in the ballgame? The fact that people actually started voting for him instead of the candidates that were garnering the most praise from the Republican elite. Once that happened, there was no turning back for McCain. So I guess someone forgot to tell the Republican elite that the people actually had a say in who got nominated. And don't try and say that Barack Obama was the Democratic party elite before the nominating battle. He wasn't even given a chance at winning by the party elite up until the end of December; according to them, Hillary was a shoe-in. Where did Obama's money come from? Almost all his campaign money was coming from grassroots organizing. Once again, the people spoke and had something different to say.
So, yes, I do think that candidates can garner enough support and finance to actually be a major party's candidate outside of what the party elite wants.
To add to the discussion, I think TimB brings up some excellent points about campaigning in modern society.

...there's 11 of us so far that are McCain/Palin voters. I'm proud to be one of them, one of a small red spot in a noisy sea of blue over here that's not afraid to take 'em on. Can't help but notice that the poll results are now showing that the sea is not quite as large as the sea itself originally assumed. Who are the others of you, and would you be interested in joining if I start up a little Conservative Dads group on here? Don't worry- the guys here will jump all over you, but only if you're obnoxious, and there's really nothing to be afraid of. They're still great folks who love their kids and want what's best for their families.
I have to wonder, looking at this poll, if the Obama followers here are a little nervous about their chances nationally? I would assume that our AHD group here would have a tendency to lean left based on nothing more than our willingness to do something the rest of society may view as unconventional (we do still all take care of our kids, right?). I would assume that, but geez, just looking at the poll up there the number of Republican voters here are greater than I would have assumed. Could there be a silent majority out there in America at large that just doesn't buy into the Obama hype? I guess I always figured this election was Obama's to lose- now I'm not so sure. So really, what do you all think?
Interesting story- here in Charlotte the Obama campaign (or someone) has been out and about downtown handing out Obama shirts to the homeless folks- interestingly they are red, geen and yellow. Certainly not the colors I associate with America, but anyway back to my point, now I can't walk the dog without seeing a handful of red, yellow and green (or is it gold??) Obama shirted dudes stumbling around. Thanks Obama campaign! Have these shirts popped up anywhere else??
You obviously feel so attacked, go ahead. But you aren't helping your case, that of the hapless loser, by whining like this. I hate this period in history, where every four years people start feeling like the victim. And speaking from a purely historical standpoint, the party that whines the most is the one that ends up losing. Sadly it happened in '04 and '00 to the Dems, the Repubs whined incessantly in '96 and '92, and the Dems whined in '88. Who's whining now?
I have to wonder, looking at this poll, if the Obama followers here are a little nervous about their chances nationally?
Always have been, since the country's demographics have not changed that radically in the last 4 years. Obama is a different kind of candidate than this country is used to, and that turns away a lot of voters. But one thing that Obama is doing is energizing the young people in this country into being interested in politics, and they are overwhelmingly registering as Democrats. Since the beginning of the primaries, the Democratic party has registered millions of new voters, and the Republican party has actually lost voters on its roll. These signs are very worrisome for the Republican party of the next 20-30 years, and the Republican party has acknowledged this openly many times. This country is going through some changes, and it can only be for the good of this country that people get involved in politics. Even I know that John McCain is different than the typical Republican candidate, much more moderate than many. He has had to lean much more to the right during his campaign to galvanize his party, but I am sure that he will continue his more moderate ways if elected.
JonMcP wrote:

I wouldn't call his opposition silent by any means, and it has yet to be seen if it is a majority. One can only know if hype is hype after the fact. George W. Bush was a lot of hype because we now have the historical evidence to prove it, however Obama would actually have to be President and fail on his promises to realize if it was hype or not.

When have I whined? Seriously. Tell me one fucking time that I have whined, when have I claimed to be the victim? I jokingly claimed one would only be jumped on if they're obnoxious. I don't feel personally attacked at all. Until now. The dialog here up until you chimed in has been nothing but positive, I thought. The external communication I've had with the folks that have been debating these issues have been nothing but respectful. I don't expect you to apologize but I'm not going to "suck it the fuck up either". I've long ignored your posts on this site because they tend to be angry or disrespectful rants, unfortunately you put my name in the header for this one in a topic that I feel passionate about.
Thank you for your insight, commentary and continued debate. Excellent point about my assumption that all McCain supports are Republicans! I would think that ultimately whoever wins this is going to have to convince registered members of the other party to vote for them.
I was pretty absent from the site until I saw the topics start about politics, since I had gotten kind of burnt out on SAHD stuff. However, politics are one of my passions, so I couldn't just idly sit by and let a good debate go on without me! I probably read more, know more, and debate more than I ever should about it, but it is great to be informed about something if you really want to have a serious political debate with someone. Thank you for remaining to be civil, also. One of the things that I admire about Obama is that he understands that you have to have civil political discourse to reach compromises that continue to advance our nation. And I honestly think that John McCain understands this, also.

What does it matter that you're outnumbered in this poll? And why do you feel the need to creative a "Conservative SAHDs" group? The external communication I've had with the folks that have been debating these issues have been nothing but respectful. I don't expect you to apologize but I'm not going to "suck it the fuck up either". I've long ignored your posts on this site because they tend to be angry or disrespectful rants, unfortunately you put my name in the header for this one in a topic that I feel passionate about.

Thank you for your insight, commentary and continued debate. Excellent point about my assumption that all McCain supports are Republicans! I would think that ultimately whoever wins this is going to have to convince registered members of the other party to vote for them.
No Problem, Jon!

Oh, Jon
You have to profess to the world that you're "one of a small red spot in a noisy sea of blue over here that's not afraid to take 'em on," and you don't see how that can be construed as whining? What does it matter that you're outnumbered in this poll? And why do you feel the need to creative a "Conservative SAHDs" group? Past November 4th, it serves no purpose, unless you want your own little corner to sit and and complain about the administration and those socialist liberals. So create your group and enjoy yourself. Won't hurt my or anyone's feelings.

Edited to say, you know what? Your discussion isn't worth my time. Clearly you're a really happy guy who doesn't need whining.
