Labor and Delivery...

OK, I know this will turn partisan but it is not meant to. However on Wed night I was listening with my wife to the governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, introduce Gov. Palin. At one point Lingle told the story of Palin delivering a speech in Dallas, TX, it was impromptu which was the reason to highlight it, I thought. Then she said that right after that Palin went into labor, flew home to Alaska and had the baby. This prompted several incredulous questions from my wife:

* Why would get on a plane in labor?
* Why would you be allowed to fly that close to term?

Here is an article from April 2008 (before the VP stuff) that deals with the questions at that time: Palin says she felt safe flying. She consulted her doctor but I can't believe she even flew out.

I also read in several sources that she was leaking amniotic fluid at 4am that morning and decided to stay in TX to give the speech and not go to the hospital.

Now to be clear my wife and I aren't overworriers. Pregnant women, can and do, fly all the time, but this seemed a bit beyond the normal. And for those who are like, hey you wouldn't bring up this stuff if she was a man (no jokes about pregnant men, thank you)....true, but one of her main selling points is her family, and how she is a hockey mom, and raised five kids, etc. You make that a vital part of your campaign then you have to deal with some questions about parenting choices.

As always, I hope for civil discourse...

Well

Well, there's always the theory that she wasn't actually pregnant....

Sorry. Couldn't resist. Still hoping for civil discourse, too. :-)

maybe

maybe after having 4 kids before, she knew her body and knew she had time to do what she wanted.......why wait in a hospital for 12 hours if you can go do things and still make it.......of course it would be a lot better story if she would have had the kid at the speech or on the plane....those would have been news worthy...other than that its just a story for lazy journalists who don't want to go work on a real story...

yours with civil discourse,

scott

She was leaking amniotic fluid in her 7th month of being pregnant with a down's syndrome baby, and she decided to give a speech, fly from Texas (with a layover in Seattle) to Alaska, and then she went a step further and drove to her small town hospital 45 minutes away from the airport.

I would call that irresponsible and worthy of media attention. Of which, I should say, there has not been enough on that front. I don't think it matters that much in the grand scheme of things compared to other policy decisions, but it says a lot about her selfishness.

Very soon after becoming a

Very soon after becoming a parent I realised there is a whole army of people from family to the old lady at the park to Bill O'Reilly to yes the entire Republican Party who are ready to comment and pass judgement on the choices you make for your family. I have seen Moms reduced to tears by stupid remarks from people who are totally ignorant of their situation but are happy to give their "expert" opinion.
I don't think it is right to try and second guess where Ms Palin chose to give birth, she knew what she was doing and why. I also don't agree that the job of VP is so onerous that she is somehow neglecting her family by agreeing to run and (hopefully not) serve for 8 years.

What exactly does the VP do, anyway? ;-)

My Thoughts

I mostly agree with JohnGilroy on this one. It really isn't my place to say why she did the things she did with regards to her pregnancy or if she is able to lead this country based upon her family matters. They are both private matters that her family can deal with quite effectively on their own, I would assume. I can, however, use the information given to make certain deductions about her ability to make choices. I utilize those deductions to help me make an informed choice. The reason journalists are all over it is because she is now very much a public figure. When you get thrust into the limelight, you are going to be endlessly picked over by the media. That comes with the territory.

Does it matter? Maybe...

Was is stupid? Yes. Besides the incrase risk of bacterial infection once fluid starts leaking, not all labors take so long. She could have gone into active labor and delivery very quickly and do you really want that risk while traveling on a plane?

Was it selfish? Yes. This is a person who professes to be so concerned about a fetus that rape victims cannot be allowed to have abortions, yet she pulls this stunt that puts her own child (how many weeks premature and with Downs) at risk.

Does it really make a difference in the big pictures of her political career? Somewhat. You have to question a person's decisions when it is likely that they could be the person sitting in the White House when a critical decision needs to be made.

Done and Over

Lets move on to other issues. I think her choices reflect poorly on her but she is now running for the secong highest office in the land. She will be next to towering figures like:
Henry Wilson, George Clinton, Alben W. Barkley, Garret Hobart, and the ledgendary Levi P. Morton! Will she messure up?

By they way Barbra Bush said this of Ferraro when she was VP nominee, "I should't say what I thinko f her but it rhymes with rich."

Bring baby to work day!

Palin said somewhere that she'd be bringing her baby to work at the governor's office, which raises the question of scale. Is there any difference between a mother bringing an infant to work when that mother is:

A. A small business owner
B. A welder
C. An attorney in a major firm
D. Captain of an Alaskan crab boat
E. Governor
F. Veep

It would seem that the details of the job in question would largely determine the answer.
