I recently received this. Thought it was interesting enough to post.... I believe there are currently chapters in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Portland, LA, Charlotte, Washington DC. You can also start your own. Take a look and see if your local group would be interested. -Mike
Hi - I work for DonorsChoose.org and I am writing to find out whether you and
the members of AtHomeDad might be interested in learning about our mustache
challenge, where men grow mustaches to raise funds for public school
classrooms.
Mustaches for Kids is an annual mustache-growing fundraiser
held in cities across the country for four weeks beginning November 13!
About DonorsChoose.org
DonorsChoose.org grew out of a Bronx high school and at our non-profit
website, public school teachers submit requests for materials to meet their
students’ needs, like books, art supplies, microscopes, field trips, and
much more.
Any individual can search requests by area of interest, learn about
classroom needs, and choose to fund the request that he or she finds most
compelling. The donor then receives photos and thank-you letters from the
classroom. At DonorsChoose.org, givers from all walks of life enjoy the
same choice, impact, and vivid feedback that—until now—have been
reserved for millionaire benefactors.
About “Mustaches for Kids” 2008
Last November, young men in NYC and Charlotte grew mustaches for four
weeks to raise funds for classroom requests at DonorsChoose.org. Similar
to a charity walkathon, for which participants collect donations per mile,
the “Growers” raised pledges for every day they grew mustaches.
“Growing season” can be one of the most fun times of the year. Weekly
events bring your chapter together to gauge progress, share funny stories,
and have a few drinks together at the local bar. Competitions are
encouraged as well, with some past examples being the “Stache Olympics”
and Mustache Look Alike Contests. Each individual chapter is afforded the
freedom and individuality to create its own events and involve members
however it sees fit. The season ends with the final “Stache Bash,”
where the Growers shaved and bid farewell to their mustaches.
Starting a chapter is less work than it might seem and we have a toolkit
that provides everything you need to get your friends, coworkers,
teammates, etc involved. For an organization to be successful, all you
need is a small group of enthusiastic people and friends willing to donate
to DonorsChoose.org in exchange for seeing how ridiculous some of your
members could look with a stache.
It is our hope that we have peaked your interest and that you are as
excited as we are about the upcoming “growing season.” For more
information on how you can get started, you can contact me at
candice@donorschoose.org. Thanks for your consideration. Your help would
be GREATLY appreciated! Hope to speak with you soon!!
