I am now the latest volunteer(ed) chair person for the local headstart (preschool) program. The have the chair person, secretary, treasure and there was one other that I can not remember. I was at the monthly parent/teacher meeting for my sons school today and this is how it went.

They have to have all the volunteer positions filled before they can have access to their funds for stuff like field trips and soforth and they still had the treasure and chair person spots open. I am a rather shy person and not a huge people person. I mean I can be a good people person when the need comes up such as when I was working outside the house and stuff but I guess I am just not that outgoing. So I was not real excited about volunteering for any of these. After the teacher brought it up again tonight someone said they would be treasure. Once that spot was filled the teacher talked about the chair person again and I do not know if it was just by chance or not but she was looking right at me while talking. So the person sitting next to me points to me and pipes up "you look like you would be a good person for that!".

What the heck am I supposed to say? Everyone had a good laugh as I accepted. I am not mad or anything. I mean I feel that if you are a SAHD then you should take every effort to be as involved as you can with your child's life. I guess this will be good for me. I know I need to be more outgoing and less shy so maybe it will help.

Just thought I would share.

Congratulations

Good for you for stepping up when called upon by the people to serve.
It's just a few small steps from chairing the local PTA to running for vice president of these United States of America.
With an eye to the future may I suggest you enroll your kids in as many sports as possible. You should probably join the NRA too.

You you confused me with the NRA thing. But as far as sports are concerned, I do plan on encouraging Ethan as much as I can to join as many after school programs and he will as he gets older. Will not force him to join them but I believe it will do a lot of good.

sorry

Just my attempt at humour.
If you are planning on using the PTA thing as a springboard to national politics you want to be able to describe your self as a "Football, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer. Hockey and Tae Kwon Do Dad" to hit as many demographic groups as possible, and NRA membership never hurts either. In fact you should probably get "NRA" tattooed on your upper arm.

Responsibility

Brian you forgot to throw in the line about how the only difference between a PTA chair and a community organizer is a PTA Chair has some doggone responsibility.
All kidding aside I think you guys are great for stepping up and volunteering in your communities.

Thanks.

I wasn't trying to toot my own horn or pat myself on the back or anything. Just playin' along with John's joke. As the kids get older, I like to fill my time with this kind if stuff. Be active in my community. Fiddle around with my art. Take care of the house. Oh, and the family too.

The PTA chair positions I hold aren't all that glorious. They are like the "outsider" positions of the PTA. One of them literally as it is the Beautification Committee. (Landscaping Projects) The other one I am known by the kids in school as the fish guy. I maintain the aquarium in the school lobby. Still, jobs other people didn't want that I rather enjoy. I am the only dad on the the PTA right now. I'd like to see that change. But that doesn't bother me. The women there are, for the most part great and our new president is pleasure to work with. I've gotta say, they do work their asses of for that school! (which is a discussion thread all it's own about spending too much time at school-hovering, helicopter parents, ect.) I remain as involved as I wish to be.

No! Thank You

Hey Brian,
I owe you a beer or 6, too bad I can't make the convention this year, bummer for me.
-anyways-
Now Dakota is in Kindergarten 3/4 of the day and my 5 years of deprived sleep is all caught up, I am on the edge of going crazy in an all new kind of way. I am a man without a mission 10:30 to 3:30 weekdays and I have been looking at volunteer options at his school on 'da school web site and you my man, motivated me to look into it further, ahem, Monday, no really!
Just because I got to pack and load today so we can ride in our local (150 miles away) edition of the Trek Breast Cancer Awareness Bike Ride, and it's an inservice day at school today.
And yes, I will be pulling a Tag-a-Long in the family 10 miler.
I just hope the forcasted rain/snow holds off til we're done!

Ah, Mile-Hi!

First, good to see you again.

Second, from 10:30 to 3:30 you are a man with a mission. Don't sell yourself short!

Like, I said, I choose to get as involved as I like. I don't want to hover over my kids. I stay involved enough to know what's going on in school and what choices are being made and actually being a part of the process and meeting a lot of people in the community by doing so. It sure makes the rest of my job like setting up playdates, carpooling and getting volunteers to help out with my PTA events (two a year) that I put on. Other than that, I have things to do!

Plus doing the Kindergym a few times along with other various classroom activities mixed in with house/dad/husband stuff - yes, man with a mission.

I see I haven't replied in sometime - sorry! How'd your ride go?

Brian
