How do I get my boys to keep thier diapers on?

I have two boys 1 & 2 years old (Irish twins). My older one keeps taking off his diaper when he goes down for a nap. It is the first thing he does - then he climbs out of his crib. I have tried everything like putting his diaper on backwards or even using duct tape and the little monster still gets it off and he throws all his blankets out and climbs under his mattress too! And...you know how it goes...monkey see monkey do! His brother is starting to do the same thing and I'm tired of washing blankets and clothes all the time. I can't get through my own laundry. Any advice will help!!!

My oldest boy went through this too

Before I tell you what worked, I will tell you it's decision time. Time to decide how far you'll go to deal with this.

Like you, we tried duct tape, reversing the diaper, sweat pants with strings we tied in knots, all sorts of things. Here's what I learned. If they want to get the damn thing off, they're gonna find a way. If you want to prevent them from doing it, you're going to have to find a LOT of ways. The most effective one for us was staying in the room with them and immediately putting whatever they just took off, back on as soon as they begin. Yeah, it totally blows to have to watch them and re-stick the diaper velcro or tape or whatever back in place instantly, but if you don't, you're hosed with the laundry problem, so pick your poison.

It would be nice to just put them in their crib at nap time and let them fall asleep quietly, but they've already ruled that out for you so time to show them who's boss and teach them that their way isn't going to be happening any more. It took us about a month before my oldest quit trying it. A MONTH!!! It was a VERY long month too, but eventually it was over and I had all but forgotten about it until I read your post.

Don't know how dark the room is your boys are sleeping in, but if possible do everything the same just stay in the room. As soon as you hear that tape being peeled off or that velcro sound, get up, tell them gently in a soft voice, "No, don't do that" and then re-attach the tape. Keep doing this every time until they either fall asleep or give up trying to fall asleep and then go thru your post nap ritual. Since you already know they didn't get a nap, you should be prepared for a very grumpy kid. Grumpy and sleepy and hopefully sleepy enough to fall asleep somewhere else without taking their diaper off. Just be sure to keep a close eye on them the first couple of days to make sure they don't sneak off, get naked and fall asleep somewhere else.

Good luck and keep a bottle of booze handy. The longer it takes, the more you're gonna need it.

Making it look difficult. Living the dream.
