Eyecare

I think Oscar might need glasses (he can't "read" small text).
I called an optician who told me they didn't do eyetests for kids under seven and that I should get a referral from his paediatrican. The paediatrican's office wants to send him to an optamologist which seems unnecessary.
Any recommendations on where I could take him or what I should look out for?

We use North Center Eye Care

We use North Center Eye Care on Lincoln near the corner of Damen and Irving Park Road. They were recommended by a friend who is a vision tester for the Chicago Public Schools. They seem fine. Sheila is okay with them, but she didn't go until she was 10 or so.

Spend the extra dough and go to the optamologist. An optician isn't as well trained and are essentially there just to get your child a prescription. I had the same problems it sounds like Oscar is having when I was a kid. The optamologist found out I had astigmatism, which an optician wouldn't. I don't have any advice as to local though.

Optician / Optometrist / Ophthalmologist!

Thanks I wasn't sure of the difference between the professions. Now (with some help from Wikipedia) I can spell them!
I took the referral from our paediatrican and he will see an ophthalmologist tomorrow then I guess we can go see an optometrist followed no doubt by a trip to the opticians and lots of visits to http://www.goggles4u.com/

Optometrist

Our district now requires eye exams for children entering school. Actually, I thought it was a state requirement, but no schools from the City seem to be following it.

Anyway, I took my five-year-old to our optometrist, Dr. Sun Ae Ma, at Dempster Eye Center. Of all my eye care experiences, I've decided the ones at her office have been the best. Turned out Irene had both astigmatism and far-sightedness. Dr. Ma said that, unlike nearsightedness, it needed immediate treatment, even if Irene had been only three.
