From the NY Times:

Women May Pass Men in the Work Force

Of course my "favorite" portion of the article:

"When women are unemployed and looking for a job, the time they spend daily taking care of children nearly doubles. Unemployed men’s child care duties, by contrast, are virtually identical to those of their working counterparts, and they instead spend more time sleeping, watching TV and looking for a job, along with other domestic activities.

Many of the unemployed men interviewed say they have tried to help out with cooking, veterinarian appointments and other chores, but they have not had time to do more because job-hunting consumes their days."

My personal fav is a REAL revelation

She runs a small day care business out of her home in Milpitas, Calif., and recently expanded her services to include after-school care. The business brings in about $30,000 annually, she says, far less than the $150,000 her husband earned in the marketing and sales job he lost over a year ago. “It’s peanuts,” she says.

Wow! Ya think?  Who would've guessed that running a daycare out of your home wouldn't be as profitable as working for a large sales/marketing firm? The economy is really shaking things up.  This is SOOOO different than it was 5 years ago.

Maybe if she wasn't such an IDIOT, she could get a good job like her husband.  Better let your hubby do the thinking there, lady. I'd say you're about one good bump on the head from being the intellectual equal of the kids you babysit.

And I predict there will soon be one less editor with a job in her local area as well.  (See, that's what a degree in economics is good for these days.  Kneel before me, humble peasants.)

lol at this guy ...

Quote:
“The main priority is finding a job and putting in the time to do that,” says John Baruch, in Arlington Heights, Ill., who estimates he spends 35 to 45 hours a week looking for work since being laid off in January 2008.

He's been working 40 hours a week for a year, isn't helping out more at home, AND still has no job. ROFL Maybe he should find a new line of work.

This article is poorly researched and poorly written. I wouldn't call the daycare lady an idiot because a quote from her was used to support a faulty premise. Reporters make people look dumb all the time while trying to make their points. That is a tough business, and it seems she is doing well.

I also love the 'men tend to sleep more while unemployed. I am an SAHD for all the extra sleep I get. Yes, I am in it for the sleep. :-)
