I'd like to use this thread to gather comments on future directions for the Chicago SAHD playgroup. I know over the past year we've picked up some new dads, while some of the "old guard" (like me) have become less active. I see no reason to keep things like they are now if it doesn't meet the needs of the current group of guys. So to kick things off, here are some random ideas I've had lately:
Historically the group has chosen to meet on Thursdays in the 10am-noon timeframe. This could be easily switched to a diffrent day, or maybe multiple days in a week, or different time.
Dads Night Out usually meets on last Sunday of the month at a bar, restaurant, or bowling alley. We could meet more often, or try different venues. I've thought of ideas like going to see a movie, or starting a book club.
We have historically held an annual holiday gathering where the whole family is invited once a year in December. Maybe schedule more family outings on a weekend at venues like Ravinia, the Botanic Garden, Brookfield Zoo, etc.
Having said all that, I know it's hard to coordinate logistics, nap schedules, school, etc. and sometimes "less is more". But again, just throwing some ideas out there to see if there's any interest. Nothing is set in stone. For me personally, my schedule is so ad-hoc these days that I'd mostly just like the chance to hang out with guys on a random weeknight or weekend when I get the rare free window of opportunity.
Finally, there has always been talk of whether we should endeavor to do more outreach/promote to other SAHDs in the city to boost regular attendance/participation. I have less energy for that these days, but if someone wants to carry the torch on that, knock yourself out! :)
Thoughts?

chicago dads
are you open to working dads or just sahds?
everyone
Hi Dave
Dads of all descriptions are welcome to the group. The kids at playgroup age from newborn to four. Several of the guys work and not everyone can make it to playgroup. Some of the guys only make it to DNOs and other events.
Mark, Thanks for posting, I was thinking of "the brothers bloom" for this months DNO?
poll
would you like to see playgroup moved to another day?

Times don't work out with Adam's nap. Had trouble breaking into the social circle.

PM playgroup?
Anyone interested in an afternoon playgroup (after 3PM?). Although as it gets warmer out, this might be a less popular option.
John: a movie would be good. Depending on start time and theater location, I'll try and attend.
Adamsdad: try coming to a DNO. it's much easier to socialize when we're not wrangling our kids on the playground.
PM Playgroup
We could do a PM playgroup.

Go with the Flow
We're happy to roll with the flow. I do like that people have started to post activities other than the weekly playgroup (not necessarily as an alternative but in addition to). Weekend activities would be a nice idea but, at least for us, they're usually pretty full already.
I do want to say thanks to everyone that volunteers to set stuff up on a monthly basis and everyone who keeps the group going strong.
feedback
so the underwhelming response to my poll is that Thursday is the day that works best for playgroup.
Maybe we can make the Green City Market on Wednesdays a regular event during the Summer? If you are going to Mr Singer and planning on hanging out down there why keep it a secret? Everyone is welcome to post events.
Mark has volunteered to organise playgroups in June. It would be nice to have organisers lined up for July and August too. Thanks
I'll do posts in a bit but the plan is Commercial Park tomorrow and Bowling for the May DNO on Sunday.
Fireside Bowl
Fireside Bowl in my neighborhood (Logan Square) has a Sunday bowling special I believe - $10 all you can bowl, or something like that. I can look into that if you haven't already picked a place.
Movie
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the site (as in the past 5 minutes), but I have gone a couple of times to the Kerasotes Matinee Movie Magic (http://www.kerasotes.com/Content.aspx?PageName=Matinee%20Movie%20Magic&PageTitle=Matinee%20Movie%20Magic) which is generally the first showing on Tuesday mornings.
I've generally gone to either Webster Place or the Glen (equi-distant from my house).
Might be something we can put on the list, especially when there is bad weather or as late fall arrives.
bowling
Mark if you are willing to look into it that would be great.
bowling
I remember when fireside bowl used to have some of the best music in town :(
