Ooo!  Look!   NCLB is going to turn more boys into SAHDs!  Stupid, unemployble SAHDS, but SAHDS nonetheless!

Actually, despite the writer's odd premise about our chosen profession, the core of her article rings true with every teacher I know.  Something is happening to boys.  Girls are afected too, but it's hitting boys first.  Attention spans are shot, and parents are increasingly clueless.  I do worry at times what my DD will face as an adult.

One MORE reason to homeschool...

I'm not sure that homeschooling is the only answer, it's just one answer to what may be part of be the real issue:  A decline in how people value intellect and learning.  Many people seem to value other things (sports, for example) over learning these days - especially with boys.     You can probably make a change in that with homeschooling if you choose, but also through other things as well.

It's not my view that this is the whole explanation for the problem, but it does seem to be a part of it.

Homeschool is not the only answer, and it is a highly-personal choice.  I sometimes get a bit preachy about it all, but on the other hand, we still vote for the school budget, which surprises people.  It's not that we hate public school, but that we wish the system were different than it is.

I've had brilliant SAT students who are in public school.  They all have immigrant parents who's involvement and focus on their kids puts the average American family to shame.  The issue of parental focus cuts across race, geography, and socio-economics.
