You can also have them taken at the closest UPS store, (which are popping up everywhere). I just saw passport photos advertised at the location on McCormick between Devon and Lincoln, across from the Home Depot.
Not sure what kind of digital camera you have but some, like the Casio Exlim, have a best shot feature. One of the options is ID photo. We just got a piece of white poster board, laid Talia on it, and took her pic with that setting. Then we printed it out for 15 cents at CVS and trimmed to size. Better than paying between $5-10 for one picture. Had no issues submitting the photo for passport. Only wish I had that camera in college for ID purposes. Happy to do it for you if you don't have that kind of feature on your camera and you're in the area at some point (Lincoln Square).
We've done our own for four different passports and it's worked fine. That seems to make more sense, because it's unlikely you'll get a decent kid picture on the first try. Take a digital pic on a white background (i.e. a white wall). Make sure it doesn't have a lot of shadows and a non-smiling pose. Then, use the site http://www.epassportphoto.com/ to size the photos to the right size (this is a big help). Print them on a decent printer or at a store. Review the guidelines on that website for the other requirements (they're not too difficult).
3 years ago i went to post office Chinatown and spent $15 and they were useless they wanted to retake camera not working it was a pain and cmrl was not happy about the flashing.
went home and found the size on the net and took without flash (20 pic, hard for 6 week old to sit still, found 2 i can use) printed Wallgreen.com frist time user got 20 free 4x6 prints, i croped and resize and i put 4 on a 8x10 sheet.
no problem, and now wife and i have done the same
Wallgreen.com you can upload pic to web page, i change login names and get new free uploads every 6 months or so
now i think wallgreens.com has a pasport sheet, (i have not used yet)
thanks for all the tips/advice - I set up a "studio" this morning and took some photos. I don't print at home anymore so hopefully walgreen's will give me decent prints.

No reason to pay
