I was given an assignment by my editor to come up with a list of top 10 dad movies of all time.  I will publish it online and wanted your input.  Could be good guy like Will Smith in Happyness or bad dad who ended up admired like Duvall in the Great Santini.

give me your choices.  the more the merrier.

Kramer vs Kramer

An oldie.  But showed a Father fighting for custody of his child in a time whenever it not only unheard of but considered abnormal and ridiculous.

Also, Evelyn with Pierce Brosnan.  Again a Father fighting to regain custody of his children.  Watch it alone however.  I alternated between rage, horror and (almost) tears.  Quite a sight to see James Bond cry.

Regards

Dowski

Field of Dreams

Some think it's a baseball movie, but it's really a movie about healing a relationship betweena father and a son.

Kevin Costner gets to do what so many of us want to do...(no, not hang out with James Earl Jones, whcih woudl be freakin' cool, too)...turn back the clock to change the past.

Searching for Bobby Fischer

I love the rain scene.  Dad is scolding his son, seeded #1 in the tournament, for losing in the first round of a chess tournament.  The son lost on purpose to the lowest seeded player to see how his dad would react.  Dad paces back in forth while son sits on the park bench in the pouring rain,  Paraphrasing - "Why did you come out with your Queen so early?  How many times have I told you not to do that?... What do you have to say for yourself?"  Shivering son replies, "Dad why are you standing so far away from me?"  All the kid wanted was a hug and to know that he was loved regardless of whether he won or lost.

What I loved about this movie was how the the script depicted the father's growth in learning how to be a good dad.

One I Like

One that I like that some will I am sure disagree on has to be Big Daddy with Adam Sandler.  Goofball guy takes on roommates so called son and raises him as his own until CPS realizes that Sandler's character is not the rightful dad.  The things that he goes through in raising the kid shows to some extreme the hardships of raising a child however, would walk through a wall of fire to protect and take care of the boy.

Big Daddy is a good choice

Big Daddy is a good choice for the category ;)  While we are on Adam Sandler movies, another good one is "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry".   Its far from one of the 'best'  but its a good movie showing how far a father will go to make sure his children are secure in their futures.

A Modern Classic!

How could you forget Daddy Day Care? It's like the entire AHD experience compressed into two hours - bread-winner wife, clueless dad (we all were once) determined to do the best for his kid turns his whole cosy life upside down despite ridicule and hostility from both men and women alike – and gets the job done through ingenuity, commitment and some crazy aerobics.

A few more left-field suggestions:

Day After Tomorrow - Dad crosses the icy wilderness of New York to save his son

Taken - Liam Neeson lays waste to Eastern European gangsters to get to his daughter – excellent ultraviolent action movie

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - even cinema’s favourite adventurer gets upstaged by his dad

Back to the Future - son actually travels through time to ensure that his parents meet – now that’s family-minded

The Road - I’ll be honest, haven’t seen the movie, but I’ve read the book, which is a heart-breakingly vivid example of one man’s commitment to his son

Shallow Hal - the opening scene - a warning to us all of how easy it is to screw up our off-spring

…And about as left field as they get: Pulp fiction - the scene where the mighty Christopher Walken gives the young boy his family heirloom of a watch. Best delivery of the words “up his ass” in movie history.

The Road

I wasn't obvious to me but I have to agree on the choice of Cormac McCarthy's The Road.  I haven't seen the movie (don't know if I will) but the book chilled me to the core.  I read it just after my boy was born and it provoked a deep viceral fear in me that I only re-live if I lose sight of my kids in the supermarket - we've all been there; that split second of pure panic before they re-appear.

Anxiety, fear, horror.  I'm sure that I wouldn't have felt that way before my kids were born.  I suppose fatherhood does change a man...

Finding Nemo

I voted for Finding Nemo... Marlin goes through hell to rescue his son.  Doesn't hurt that my daughter's favorite 'movie' is the live-action 'Nemo Show' at Animal Kingdom... good thing we live close!

I Am Sam

Sean Penn as a retarded father fighting to keep his daughter, played by Dakota Fanning.

Very moving flick. One of those movies that when flipping through the channels stops me and holds my attention no matter how far in it is. It's got my vote.

Yes, I Am Sam

I'm not afraid to admit that I cry like a baby every time I see that movie. I was SHOCKED Penn didn't win an Oscar for it. I think it went to Denzel for being a bad cop... can't remember the name of it. Anyway, I have 3 daughters, so this movie really gets to me the way his daughter keeps sneaking out of her foster parents home to be with her Dad.

The Champ

Ricky Schroder's first role I am guessing.  I won't spoil it for those of you that haven't seen it, but it has great ending.

My Favorite

My favorite is Father and Scout with Bob Saget and Brian Bonsall.  It's a great family movie about how a father and son reconnect on a school camping trip.

The Pursuit of Happyness

Great movie, I saw it before I had a son and it made me think of my father and I. Now that I have a son I see it from the dads perspective. the subway restroom scene is a heart breaker. The movie is based on a true story too.

Not a movie dad...

but a TV dad.  I vote for Hank Hill from King of the Hill.  Hank always has his son, Bobby, in mind.  Alywas trying to protect the middle schooler nd teach him the ways of the world.

************************** My wife asked me if I had signed up for the 401k yet. I told her I hadn't. She asked me why and I told her I couldn't run that far.

a little late.

Hey I may be a little late but an old goodie that I used to like when I was younger was Over the Top...it's an old Stallone movie in which Stallones character picks up his son ( who doesn't really know him because he left when the kid was young ) from his military school and drive him home aross country and on the way tries to win his son over...
