I just got stumbled this site, seems to be a great resource so far. I know the person who shared it with me will be excited to hear I've taken to it. I haven't found a lot of content yet, but I like what I have found. I'm a part-time SAHD, could be full time but haven't made the final decision yet. My children are young, 8 mo and 20 mo, but we plan on home-schooling, so I may make the plunge in the near future. I have my own business which I subsidize by working 40 hours a week on the side. My children have made me a dad's advocate, and I've already created my first group. If anyone out there is in the southern Indiana area, there is now a group to make connections!

Several others welcomed me, I'd like to welcome you. I'm a newb too. Not very close to southern Indiana I'm afraid. No very close to much of anything except cow pasture, corn fields and of course ... a Walmart. :) Which is why I stumbled on this site. I had to get on the WWW to find others like me. It seems, we (SAHDs) are scattered all over the globe. I've seen posts here from UK, CA, AU as well as the four corners of the good ole' US. I found it a little difficult to navigate through the subjects in the forums at first too, but I'm getting a little better at it.
I spent 25 years building a resume a yard long. Since my daughter was born over six years ago, I've become more of a sandbox/swingset architect, scooter/bicycle mechanic, expedition leader of the day trip fishing/hiking/exploring adventures, applier of bandaids, maker of smoothies, and all around subject matter expert/ go to guy for all questions that will come from a six year old's mind ... :) And sometimes, the best answer I can come up with is, "Just Because Baby ... just because."
This is the best job I've ever had, and I've had a hundred.

I've been home with the kids since 2000 and started off with twins as a first time dad...what a trip it's been! I also started a business at home that's become what I would consider successful but the kids are the number one priority. As they have gotten older and have spent more time in school it's become easier to run the business from home.
Offering up some advice if you don't mind...
If I had the business instead of a job before the kids were born it might have been a harder decision to make and stay at home with them. So my advice is that if you are able to work your business part time until the children get into school age and then go full time into the business it might be an easier transition later. The benefit to going full time SAHD at first is the bond you'll develop with the children instead of a bond they may develop with the baby sitter or day care.
This is just how it worked out with me. I'm not saying you have wouldn't have to juggle scheduling your personal and business life but it was worth it.
