Hi guys!

My son just turned 2 in December and I have been home with him since he was about 5 months old (my wife was home then too, but went back to work when he was about 8 months).  I work as a freelance translator (Norwegian to English - I am a Canadian btw) - I work in waves, but it is probably equivalent to having a part-time job with no set hours :-)  I used to have a 'real' job as well, but we decided it would be best to have a parent home for the first 2-3 years at least so I quit my job and (joyously) took the plunge.

I have to say, I really do love being at home with my son.  Here in Norway, there is (almost) universal daycare and there is a lot of pressure to put your kids in daycare from 10-12 months.  If you decide to stay at home with your kids, dad or mom, you are definitely living outside the norm.  Fortunately, they  have many drop-in daycare centres where you can go and they have songs, activities, and other kids to play with.  There is a pretty good one really close to our house and my son and I go there often.  The other parents are mostly moms, of course, but there are a few dads that show up regularily as well - although most of the dads are usually only on short-term leave from work and eventually disappear...

Anyway, here I am.

Now it is time to make some lunch and get ready to go!

Welcome

Hi DaddyFever,

Welcome to the boards.  Glad to hear that things are going so well for you in Norway.  I must say it sounds like you have a lot to deal with in the Norway society since you are going against their norm.  Good for you and keep up the great work that I know you are doing as daddy.  Use the board frequently as we all like to share our experiences with one another and I would love to hear more on things for you as they go.

I also want to invite you to come to the United States and specifically to Omaha Nebraska the weekend of October 2, 2010 for the 15th Annual At Home Dads Convention.  If you are able to work it out, I guarantee you that it will be well worth your time to be here and attend.  Dads usually start coming in on the Thursday afternoon before the Saturday event for the Dads Night Out that the local group hosts.  Then there is usually some activities planned for the day on Friday before the "Meet & Greet" that takes place on Friday.  Saturday itself is the convention with varies break out sessions/topics of discussion and then there is the convention dinner afterwards as well.  Hope that you may be able to work it out.

Re: Welcome

Hey - thanks for the welcome!

Although I have been through Omaha before (and it seemed nice on the drive-by), I think it will be difficult to make the convention - but thanks for the invite!  Of course, if I land an enourmous contract or win the lottery, who knows ;-)

I will do my best to particpate here, but my wife is the real net junkie and since my laptop went south, we only have one computer to fight over...
