Housework with kids

Friday is my cleaning and laundry day.  I like to say that I am messy, but clean.  My wife is the same way (one of the things that first attracted me to her, btw) so we don't stress about the clutter that builds up over a week.  We always kept the kitchen and bathroom clean, but didn't wash the floors in the rest of the house very often before we suddenly had a family member who ate a lot of his food off the floor... Now, I clean the house and wash the floors every Friday.

My 2 year old son loves to help.  He has his own, kid-size dustbuster and likes to help wash mirrors, glass, the bathtub, etc.  He also likes to help fill and empty the washer and dryer (we have a front loader washing machine) and when I fold clothes, he picks them out of the basket and hands them to me - I may never have to bend over again!  I remember when I was a kid, I loved dusting - don't ask me why - so I would dust when my mother cleaned the house.  My son is a little young to be thorough enough for that, but I can't wait - I HATE dusting.

It is snowing like crazy here in Stavanger today - that means plenty of fun outside sweeping the walkway and driveway... Sometimes I think about people who complain that their kids never help do anything around the house; I wonder if maybe you need to start them young?  I am trying anyway :-)

Swiffer

I don't know if you have this there, but a Swiffer is a great dust rag for kids. It picks up the dust without the need of spraying the surface first. The baby can even do the dusting!

swifferiffic

We do have swiffer here - haven't tried it though - I usually use a microfibre cloth that doesn't require you to spray the surface first, but a swiffer seems like a smart idea.  I'm sure my son would love it.  I'll buy one and let you know how it goes (but not today - cleaning day is already in full swing, just having a coffee break!)

Lucky You...

Be glad you have a little helper.  My daughter, almost three, makes more messes than she cleans.  I guess she takes after her mother in that respect.

Enjoy having a little helper.  I am jealous!

************************** My wife asked me if I had signed up for the 401k yet. I told her I hadn't. She asked me why and I told her I couldn't run that far.

same habits here

My daughter used to be afraid of the vaccume cleaner until lI made it fun.  She now comes running when she hears it and wants to do it all by herself.  She loves to help wipe things and put her toys away.  I believe its good to instill these healthy habits in them when theyre young.  I remember helping my parents when i was very young too.
