Wondering if any of the at home dads know of the procedure so as to not have more children. Know that a local anesthetic can be used and it can be over in fifteen minutes. Any complications, instructions. And, how is life after it's done. Has the romancing side of life shown any kind of dramatic improvement?
Never Mind The B*ll*cks
Check out the blog archives of my old mate Greg Barbera, ex-'Punk Rock SAHD' and long-time contributor to this site ('ex'- SAHD because he raised two boys til school age, before reluctantly giving it all up to edit 'Beer Monthly'...!). This one details the op. http://thechestpains.blogspot.com/2005_01_22_archive.html But if you search around those dates, there's more on the after-effects (I believe frozen peas were required for some time). Good luck! P.s. No idea if b*ll*cks is offensive in the colonies. I apologise in advance.
No help in the romance dept.
Greg's blog is great, so read that. I will tell you that the process is painful for longer than they tell you and your wife won't suddenly find you more attractive because you are shooting blanks.
Oh, and the rubber band around my junk and attached to my gown to hold it out of the way was a major surprise. It didn't hurt; it was just quite unexpected. On the bright side, you get to have a woman other than your wife handle your package and not get into any trouble for it...

Abstinence seems to work in
Abstinence seems to work in our house. But if you've committed to this then just know that everyone I know says it's not a really big deal right away but several days later, it's all just fine.
I had this done a few weeks
I had this done a few weeks ago. It wasn't that bad. Like others have said you get to have another woman handle your package. In my case this was not a great benefit. It hurt for a few days pretty good and was sore for a few weeks. Not bothersome. I could golf, play hockey and whatever, but if I got pushed in that area by my kids or my wife it still hurts a bit.
Only takes 15 minutes. Three needles to numb the pain and then one incision. That scar tingles and don't feel good, but all in all it is for the better. I think this will make the lovin that much better. She keeps saying it will. Won't know for a few more months if I'm good to go. That's the worst part. The waiting.
I had it
last august. Takes MAYBE 15 minutes tops. Not the most fun thing ever, but glad it's done.
More dangerous for men, so I've heard
And my lady's gyno was the one who told us, so I don't believe its bs.
Sorry I'm posting on a somewhat out of date thread but I couldn't help but weigh in on this. According to my lady's doctor, the male vasectomy, although slightly less invasive than the female "tube tie," is very much harder to reverse, if so desired at some point, and there is documented research that I'm obviously not citing here (Google it) that says vasectomy complications are more common than complications arising from a woman's tubes being tied, outside of the risk for tubal pregnancy. Infections, loss of feeling/impotence, your grapes really do shrink, and yes, you really do begin to be more estrogen controlled, for obvious reasons. If the woman does it however, if at some point she wants to get pregnant again, successful reversal chances are higher, etc.
My fiancee and I spoke about this at length, and fortunately for me, she was the one who reminded me of what the doc said and who supported it the most at first. Suffice to say when (not if) we go through with it, she'll be going under the knife.
what??
What are the "obvious reasons" for increased estrogen?? Hormones from the testicles don't enter the blood stream via the vas.
I suggest you Google it again, because there are no reliable sources for anything you have just stated.
We produce it too
My wife's doctor, not the internet, told us that males produce estrogen also, as I knew from high school sex ed as well. When the testicles, a huge source of testosterone, are cut off from the rest of the body, the estrogen that is normally produced stays at the same levels while the production of testosterone greatly diminishes, for reasons that should be obvious, but maybe aren't. He said that NOT ALL sterilized males physically and/or emotionally react to the increased prevalence of estrogen because even with the large decrease of testosterone production, most men produce enough from other organs to make up for it. He also said shrinkage is not across the board but that it happens. His main emphasis however was that vasectomy is hands down physically more dangerous than clamping a fallopian tube.
Another thing is that he is a gynecologist. A tubal ligation may very well seem as the only way to go for him because he has performed the procedure thousands of times. I'm sure in med school he heard numerous horror stories about both, but now only actually has experience with one.
