Selective Hearing and Listening
OK, I am getting pushed to my limits here and it’s getting old and making me old in the process. Getting “shipwrecked” somewhere on a beach with a bunch of babes is sounding better by the minute! I'm wishing I was somewhere other than here!
Tonight out of the blue my 4 YO decides he’s going to have selective hearing with a wiseass smirk on his face and ignores me. The only time I get to see this and other “trendy” personalities is after 7 PM when we are trying to get him to bathe and go to bed. A future Rant here!
What would you do?
My wife doesn’t support this action but when I try to make a point with him she jumps my shit for being a dick to my kid. So, in my house I got one kid who chooses not to listen to me and the other one, an adult kid, who chooses to not hear what I say, or she interprets it to me being a dickhead.
She gets the silent treatment from my son as well but lets it slide and that leaves me in a position where I have to be the adult and do something about it or get walked on from now on. I deal with his shit daily and its no longer cute. It might be time to take him out of preschool so we can relate, as Hemingway puts it, “mano y mano” so he can get away from outside influences and become a sweet boy again...
What would you do?
Ahgghh!
If this and other undesirable behaviors only happens after 7:00, that might be a clue that evening routine needs to be earlier so that you're done with bath, book negotiations and other bed-time chores BEFORE the clock strikes 7 and he turns into a pumpkin....
It's also age appropriate, not much you can do about it. Reacting strongly may just serve to encourage it...I've never understood it, but it does seem that some kids will repeatedly do a behavior that gets a negative reaction simply because it gets a reaction (I have one like that).

Andy thanks. Sometimes it is the simplest things at least it worked tonight. Corralled him from Trevor who was wiped out as well at 6:30, fed him, showered him and in bed at 7:30 and asleep by 7:40. Mom was not in the picture tonight because she is down with a summer Flu bug. Tomorrow is another night though; actually, Monday night is the next test as were off to Summit County tomorrow for the weekend for some biking with the cousins.
