I'm a stay at home dad of 3 years now, but have 2 years experience prior to that.

I was in school when my daughter was born, so switched to evening classes right before the birth so that I could stay at home and raise her as my wife already had a decent paying job.  I went back to work 2 weeks after my baby girls 2nd birthday and one of the hardest days of my life was the first day I dropped her off at day care.

With 2 incomes, we were able to move up and into a nice neighborhood, but of course good times can't last.  I got my layoff notice a year later with baby #2 already on the way.  Ironically, my wife took a big promotion that made up for my lack of income, so instead of me going out a getting a job just to pay for daycare, I've stayed at home with my babies now since February 2007.

My kids are the greatest joy of my life, followed very closely by my dear wife.

I live in Kyle, Texas (about 10 minutes south of Austin) but the mommy groups around here aren't keen on a man invading thier turf, but oh well... if they chose to use a public park to meet, then they will just have to deal with me - lol

While in the park and everywhere else

Stay as far as you can from the stay at home moms.  Grandparents and other dads are the one's to talk to.

Austin!

Philip,

If you are that close to Austin, there is a thriving At-Home-Dad community out there.  Get hooked up with those guys and get involved in their group and activities.  Doing that and staying connected to this site will enrich your life, and the lives of your kids.  Of course, I would be in some serious trouble if I didn't take this opportunity to plug the convention this fall!  If you can swing it, it is an awesome chance to meet other dads that do what you do, some even come from your neck of the woods!

I live in the dfw area and

I live in the dfw area and moms here in tx are so snooty and suspicious. I have noticed there are times I take my son to the park and everyone grabs there kids and leave. I actually find it pretty upsetting. But here in Denton I haven't been able to find any sahds much less a group. Thank god for disc golf.

Visiting Austin in July

Welcome to the group.  I'll be in Austin from July 4th to 10th for the USA Boy’s Volleyball Junior Olympics. I had a great time in Austin six years ago. Hung out in Barton Creek with the boys one afternoon and watched the bats fly out of their cave from TGIF. I'm hoping to hook up with Dr. Aaron Rochlen, a counseling psychologist in The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Education who has done extensive research on at-home dads and was presenter at last year's At-Home Dad Convention in Omaha. You might want to give Aaron a call.

Keep On Daddying,

Hogan Hilling, 20 year at-home dad veteran
