Post-natal depression in fathers 'often undiagnosed' By Michelle Roberts
Health reporter, BBC News

Many new fathers experience post-natal depression, yet most cases go undetected and untreated, experts warn.

One in 10 new fathers may have the baby blues, US researchers believe - based on their trawl of medical literature.

While this rate is lower than in new mothers, it is more than currently recognised, they told the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Postpartum Dads

Good post. I think that depression in dads with a new baby is often overlooked and happens more often than people think. My wife suffered from postpartum with our first so we went to her therapist before our second was born. The therapist also said that it could happen to dads. Our baby is now four months old and I sometimes find myself sinking into depression when things are difficult but it helps to be aware of what's happening. Since my wife went through it with our first, she's a lot of help and let's me get a couple of full nights sleep when I'm feeling bad and also helps out more with the baby and our two year old. It also helps to stay connected to my parent's group and get out of the house. For me, I think the depression happens mainly because of sleep deprivation due to the baby getting up once or twice a night and always having trouble going to sleep. Anyway, I hope that more dads can be aware that it can heppen to them and take steps to deal with it.

Thanks for posting

The medical community may not have been aware before or may not have given attention but I'm sure plenty of dads on this site are aware.  Before I found this website, there was a definite sense of isolation and the feeling that I was going this alone.  These ideas, coupled with the fact that my daughter refused to take a bottle for 2 months after my wife returned to work, led to some pretty down days for me. n It truly was a lifesaver to find a forum with other men in similar parenting situations (elective or not).  When  I asked my wife's doctor and my own doctor about post-natal depression in fathers, they told me they were unaware of such instances.  I'll have to make sure to let them know about this study.

Fathers Day USA Today Story

I just talked to USA Today yesterday about the changes the men go through when they become fathers.  Had a great conversation and learned about different research that shows what hormonal and chemical changes happen to fathers.  I think it will run as a Fathers Day piece.  Although I didn't suffer from depression, I noticed the changes...especially when we had our first.
