NYC Dads on Today Show

Submitted by NYC Dads Group:

The Today Show aired a progressive segment this week on stay at home dads & working moms.  I wanted to share it with other at-home dads (and those considering the role) as well as their working wives.  The segment, titled "The Modern Family", included a personal spotlight on my family as opposed to a focus on our NYC Dads Group.  This segment had the promise to start shifting the at-home dad conversation moving BEYOND Mr. Mom...and I thought the Today Show did a really nice job of delivering on that message. Yep, included the bit about being termed something more appropriate like "modern men" or "involved fathers" as opposed to some other outdated terms splashed around by the media too often.
At the segment's outset, Hoda commented, "if you're tuned in today from home and taking care of your kids, there is a good chance that you are a dad."  Thanks for recognizing that fact!  The piece included equity in hearing both sides of the modern family story - as opposed to just the stay at home dad.  There was balance on the different perspectives and range in discussing some of the rewards/challenges of our roles.  There is a lot to dissect from this packaged segment that included a back to the studio live discussion with authors Jeremy Adam Smith (groundbreaking author of The Daddy Shift) and Stacy Kaiser (How To Be a Grown Up).  It was awesome to be included in a segment including Jeremy Smith because he truly understands the big picture here.

I will compliment Smith for disagreeing with Kaiser, and clearly stating that "the big story here is the degree to how the stigma (of at-home dads) is disappearing.  The dads are not alone on the playgrounds anymore and they are forming communities...providing options for dads."  Even host, Willie Geist, concurred in his closing comments that the "stigma is starting to crack a bit."

Nice Work

And congratulations on the story.

DAD OR ALIVE?

So, I wanted to reply to this post because I am the working mom in our family and my amazing husband is a stay-at-home-dad... and not of his own choice, I might add. My husband was laid off (like a large percentage of America) in January and we couldn't justify paying for private day care for our infant daughter. Alas, he became a SAHD. He is amazing with our 9 month old daughter, Ava, who just thinks the sun rises and sets with him. He's taken on this challenge in a way far better than I ever could, and I am truly humbled that I've such an incredible husband.
