Hello there, I am an at home, looking for work at home Dad to four boys 7-14 in the Sierra Nevada foothills in northern California. I set up my own blog and started looking for like-minded blogs to help me understand the and play the role better. I was surprised to find the plethora of discussion in an area I felt alone in not too long ago. So thanks for that to one and all.

I have a problem with the SAHD acronym. (I am sure this has come up many times but this is my time.) It is too close to S-A-D for my comfort or liking. I am also sure that I am not alone in this.
Why have we settled for such an ambiguous acronym? Is there a history I am not aware of, a story I don't know?
It seems to me that if every contributor and respondent on this site worked to change the reference it would change fairly swiftly.
So is everyone ok with it, is it just me that it bothers?

How's this?

I have no problem being referred to as "the manny".

On another note; when I pass by the new construction house, around the corner, with baby in stroller, The foreman often shouts out,"dude has the best job!". I do.

Get over It

In these parts we prefer AHD, as in At Home Dad.

There is nothing Stay about this job!

Yes, At-Home Dad

The term "Stay At-Home Dad" came from the term "Stay At-Home Mom." But, as Mile-Hi Dad said, there is nothing "Stay" about this job. We are always on the go with our kids.

This, and the analogy to "SAD" that you mentioned, are the reason that most in the At-Home Dad community have settled on the term "At-Home Dad." This website is "AtHomeDad.org." The national organization is Daddyshome, "The National At-Home Dad Network." The Annual Convention is called the "At-Home Dad's Convention."

While WE have all tried to stay away from Stay-at-home dad (SAHD), it will take time to change the way OTHERS call us.

We are trying to change the definition of ourselves by using a more appropriate word, but it takes time to change others' views. If we all start calling ourselves "At-Home Dads" instead of "SAHDs" others will change what they call us too.

You're Retired

You retired to take care of your children.

Got It

OK, thanks, that makes more sense.
Will take the at-home-Dad approach and reinforce wherever I can.

I don't like being called

I don't like being called SAHD either, because I'm extremely happy to be able to be the one home with our child... so I came up with FAPPAH. Sure, it's a little off-kilter, and even misleading, but I like it.

I like FAPPAH

because it rhymes with "papa."

So why don't they call it mooching when the wife stays home?
