We will need a double stroller in the near future. My wife and I are debating between Graco type doubles (front/back) or side by side (joggers, etc.).  I'm leaning towards a more rugged stoller like a Valco, Mountain Buggy, or City Select while my wife is going towards the Graco type.

Besides price issues, anyone want to weigh in with advice?  I've opted out of double BOB because, as much as I love the single, the double is just too wide for errands and store aisles.

Double Front/Back

There is one that basically grows with your child. In the back the child sits on a seat.  That one you can use for a significantly longer period of time.  Children grow so fast that both you described they will grow out of in a very short period of time. It's great for the manufacturers, not so great for the parents.  So, go with one that has a seat in the back, and a normal bucket seat in the front for the smaller child.

Back to Front

Yes, I preferred the back to front too. However, consider how soon your oldest may be ditching the stroller. If I recall, your oldest is 2 right? All of my kids ditched the stroller at age 2 and I only got the double stroller for the last two because they were only 16 months apart. Shortly after the older of those two was two, he wanted O-U-T of the stroller which I liked because I prefer my kids to walk anyway and get the exercise.

stroller

We have a single for the baby and there is a little place for my son to stand and ride if he gets tired of walking. It works great for me but my son is almost 5 and my little girl is just 9 month. So the age difference is what makes it work.

This stroller is great because it is doesn't cost much and your older child can easily get on and off by herself. The stroller folds down well and has a good storage area in the middle. There is a carseat attachment for the front (which might be extra, I can't remember). It also is as narrow as a regular stroller, which helps on narrow Chicago sidewalks and store aisles.
